I was there.. great fun!!!!!!!!! and we had 3 more............
I have the NC State game on VHS and several others, such as the Memphis game in 91, The Socon Championship in 91, App State in Boone in 91, The Xavier game in 1992, some video called "4 and More" that the athletic department released after the 1992 season (it's about a 90 min highlight reel of the 89-92 season with some interviews). I have a few more too. The quality on a couple of these aren't the greatest. I would love to put them on youtube the only problem is I don't have the equipment or the knowledge on how to convert a VHS to a digital format. If anyone has the proper equipment and knows how I would be glad to send them to you, just as long as I get them back! :)
I am impressed they made a video like that...never heard of it or seen it unfortunately. (Bucster check your messages)
How did that happen? It was big news at the time, but also a little before my time.
Very much like the Tennessee game year before last!!!!!!!!
But whatever happened to the Kansas game that was supposedly going to be played here?
About two weeks later ETSU hosted Michigan State at home in the dome. They only lost by 11 but were never really in the game. The program started tailing off that year as they lost in SoCon Tourney to UTC.
But whatever happened to the Kansas game that was supposedly going to be played here?
As I understand it, there was a buy out clause in the contract, and Kansas elected to pay ETSU rather than play in Johnson City.
Now, let me change the subject back to the original post.
What else was going on in Johnson City that day that was so big that the news of ETSU going to their first NCAA Tournament in 21 years was not the lead story on the overall newscast?
It amazes me that a story of such cultural signifigance would be put on hold behind the WEATHER!
Just put it to you this way- when the Steelers went to the Super Bowl in 1996- it was the lead story, period, on all the newscasts.
Yet I have noted that when the Bucs played Belmont for the right to go to the NCAAs, and in Johnson City (not the Tri-Cities) I cannot imagine a bigger sporting event ever taking place than the Bucs playing for the right to go to the NCAAs (hence the Johnson City equivilent of the Steelers playing for the Super Bowl in town), it was never mentioned until sports.
I believe one of the reasons sports struggles here is because it simply isn't given enough importance around here. This is an example.
Here's some fun trivia for you. In 88 and 89, a network played all of ETSU's home games. What network was it?
