Who can sign up for the Bar-B- Q cookoff?

Steven Herce is taking apps for kitchen help. See thread in stickies ... http://ncaabbs.com/showthread.php?tid=309433

I'd love to help but early Friday duties prevent my participation. There's always next game. 04-cheers

These are two different things, right? The BBQ cookoff is for the UNT game and the R Association tailgate is for SMU? That's my reading of it.

I'm starting a new tailgate thread (one that covers the whole season and is not limited to a tailgate for lettermen only -- and also has a better subject than "your welcome") to discuss all tailgate concerns.

Guess I misread the article originally... but are the cookoff and the R Association lettermen's tailgate one and the same? It seems the lettermen's tailgate is lettermen only.
I'm a little underwhelmed with the plan for OSO 2008. I like the Gallery Furniture aspect. I like the cookoff with the rodeo. Really, that's it though. The mayor, Ezra Charles, etc is a minimal draw IMO. Even more important, it seems like there is not enough time to make a difference at this point. Even the same plan instituted 1 month prior to the game would have been better.

I'm not trying to totally bag on the plan because I think there are some good aspects to it. I guess my biggest complaint is in the delayed timing.

We've talked about this over and over, and I'm glad that they are doing something, but I don't think this should be the "final answer."
They should find out what HS teams are playing on Thursday (there should be several) and make sure they are inviting those schools to come. I know most HS football is on Friday night, but not all of it.

Have their been big ads in the Chronicle for the game or commercials on local television? Thanks

I know of four HS teams playing the next night on the 30th (Jersey Village, Deer Park, Cy-Springs, & Katy Taylor). Also, I know two other teams that have open week (Cy-Creek & Cy-Woods).

Well, I got a call from "David Bailiff" today. Essentially it was one of the pre-recorded messages with info about the upcoming game. Looks like they are trying to reach out.

Me too!

He mentioned SMU as a "in-state" rival rather than a conference rival. I thought it an interesting choice of words.

I am looking forward to the kickoff next Friday.

But why is he calling season ticket holders? This is like the stuff that used to get mailed out from the ticket office...really nice/slick brochures and/or schedules. I always got the feeling that only people with some sort of connection to Rice got them.

Maybe they are mining the lists of other Rice sports season ticket holders? Maybe they are calling the people they have numbers for? I don't know, but my machine is always on should Coach Baliff want to make a return call...

Well, as much as I would love to be one, I am not a season ticket holder for anything. So I guess it is anyone who has bought tix in the past for any sport. Which might not be such a bad idea.

They mined the phone numbers from all people who have purchased tickets for any sporting event over the last few years. I buy my tickets individually and I got a phone call as well. I am not a season ticket holder for football, but getting the message from him was nice. I am planning on being there anyway...look forward to it....

I believe the techincal term is "Low Hanging Fruit" 03-idea

I got a call at home (unlisted number that I rarely give out to anyone) and then my wife got a call on her cell phone (no reason she should get a call since she is an Aggie and I always buy our Rice tickets).

I'm not exactly sure how they got our numbers. I am not currently a season ticket holder, and haven't been since we lived in Houston over 8 years ago.
Are there any promotions for this game such as buy two get one free or something? I am trying to get some people to go.
There are $10 tickets...no buy one get X free that I know of.
What's the expected attendance?

I'm going to guess announced is 25K but those long camera angles will make the place look mighty empty.

I really hope I'm wrong on this. 03-phew

I got the call from Bailiff & I also got an email from the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo about the BBQ. Rodeo members can get half price tickets in the upper deck for the SMU game.
The game being on Friday night will hurt. I have talked to a number of SMU fans, that usually make road games that will not be going. Things like, kids being involved in highschool games, band, cheerleaders, players, not able to get away from work etc....

I know, it's just too bad that we have to play on ESPN

Rice-SMU should be promoted more as a conference rivalry. This is the 91st consecutive year (1918 to present) that Rice and SMU have been conference rivals.

Very few other schools in I-A/FBS can claim a conference rivalry that long. I think the only ones with longer consecutive conference rivalries are...

Illinois/Minnesota/Northwestern/Purdue/Wisconsin (Western Conference/Big Nine/Big Ten): 1896 to present (Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio State had all joined them by or before 1912)

UT-Austin/A$M/Baylor (SWC/Big 12): 1915 to present

Cal/Washington (PCC/AAWU/Pac-8/Pac-10): 1916 to present
