It should be interesting to see how Obama answers the questions about his love of late term abortion.
And McCain's answer when he's asked what should be done to help the poor and AIDS victims.

What's worse, late term abortion, or tens of thousands of people dying because of war?
Pro-life? Really?
EDIT: Sorry... fixed it.
If you are going to exaggerate... why not just say billions and trillions of people dying because of war?
And McCain's answer when he's asked what should be done to help the poor and AIDS victims.
I hope he had enough nads to say to tell the poor to get a job, or to get a second job, or to get an education to get a better job or to get off their lazy arzes and get a job.
And McCain's answer when he's asked what should be done to help the poor and AIDS victims.
Hopefully he should say that it's the job of churches & charities. More money has already been put into AIDS research than any other disease in human history. It's actually disgusting when you compare it to the amount of money given to cancer, heart dz, etc.
If I recall the Bible says nothing about the government supporting the poor. Instead it calls for people to give of their own free will, not for Ceasar to take more money so that they poor can have a better lifestyle.
Actually, if you watched the forum last night, it was extremely insightful in terms of both candidates, even though McCain definitely tailored his responses and rhetoric to play to the evangelical audience he was a part of. Obama did not pander, which I liked. McCain was honest and forthright too, which I also liked.
If you didn't see it, you probably missed the most honest Q&A we will get with either candidate, as well as some of the most poignant questions.

The government shouldn't make decisions based on what the bible says.

I agree, and I never said that they should. It was a response to GN's comment about the poor and AIDS.
I thought the program was good for a first effort to do what was attempted. Rick did a good job as moderator and, with practice, would do a better job the 2nd or 3rd time. We may see more of this type of "debate" in future elections where an agenda setting venue is allowed. Maybe we can see one in a public school setting, maybe in downtown Washington, D.C.
Some of the questions were phrased to make an indictment, especially the ones on education. "The USA is 19th among industrialized nations in high school graduations. Are you in favor of getting rid of "bad teachers"? There is NO ONE in favor of keeping "bad teachers". Tenure protects teachers against firing for capricious reasons so the administrator MUST prove that the teacher is "incompetent" or that there is an immoral action by the teacher, and, in the first case, that the administrator has met with the teacher to help him/her improve their work. If the documentation shows this has been done, that teacher is FIRED. (There are 25 pages of instruction in the B'ham Principal's Handbook on documenting teacher performance)
They were asked about merit pay for "better teachers". The AEA worked with the Alabama Legislature to set up a merit pay system for "better teachers" and after a couple of years the STATE ditched the system as "too expensive" because they wanted ONLY ONE teacher per school to get the higher pay.
Vouchers were brought up as enabling good students to go to private schools. The stumbling block I have seen on them is how the amount would be determined. Any voucher that pays less than 80%-85% of the private school's TOTAL COST, would amount to nothing more than a supplement to rich parents who could afford the school without aid. To tell a $20,000 per year parent that he/she can get $2,000 toward a $7,000 per year school is not helping much. Indian Springs School does offer scholarships, but that is a different thing.
Obama did not pander,
Please tell me you are joking. His entire platform is about pandering.

I wasn't talking about his platform; I was talking about his answers to the questions in last night's debate. Did you not watch it? If not, then don't comment on it.
And if you are going to talk about pandering in platforms, McCain has reversed course on just about every issue in his platform from 2000, as he panders daily to the evangelicals he called "agents of intolerence" eight years ago.
The format is interesting in that the candidates will not be able to hear each other's responses.
Surprise, surprise McBush cheated. Of course, he is so freaking stupid that he made painfully obvious that he knew the questions in advance, but hey, we are used to our republican presidential candidates being stupid.

He listened to the questions when they were asked to Obama.
Pastor Warren, the host of last night's forum was just on CNN. In an interview with Rick Sanchez the pastor admitted McCain was not even at the Church for the first half hour of the event. This admission comes as a surprise to those of us who watched the event and were told many times that McCain was at the Church and in isolation.

Pandering, like "pork-barrel spending", is in the eyes of the beholder. BOTH are pandering if you mean trying to make themselves look more & more electable. Each is trying to say only what will help their cause while not stepping on toes that can hurt their cause. That is politics.
I think BOTH men handled themselves well and most who I have heard who are critical of one or the other, have an agenda in which they want one to "look bad" while their "champion" looks like the next thing to the "Holy Grail". I believe BOTH are good men and the nation will not fall off the face of the Earth with the election of either. We have "survived" or prospered because of or in spite of the "New Deal", the "Fair Deal", the "New Frontier", the "Great Society", Watergate, "Billy Beer", the Iran-Contra Affair, etc. to the present day.

The NYT confirms it:

McCain probably had his aides watching or listening for him. Handling McCain's computing and his television viewing...hey, that's multi-tasking.

Now, now. It's impossible to mention the NY Times and cofirming something in the same sentence.
If a guy is deceitful enough to cheat in a CHURCH how can he be trusted on anything? How can anyone know what his real positions are on any of the scores of major issues he has flip-flopped on in the last 8 years?
I mean, we knew he was corrupt, he was one of the Keating 5, and has been in bed with lobbyists every since. He even went as far as inviting many of his lobbyist friends to help run his campaign. But even for a slimeball, this is pretty slimy.

Since you have provided irrefutable proof that he cheated, why don't we just call the election now.

Really? McCain's the slimeball? Tony Rezko, Bill Ayers, Rev Wright, & Louis Farrakhan. Sure, McCain's the slimeball.
Oh wow, he invited friends to help run a campaign. What a huge scandal!! I'm sure Obama doesn't have any lobbyists doing anything for him. And you're talking about real positions when Obama has taken the opposite position on every issue that he campaigned on in the primary. It took him only 2 months to "re-evaluate" all his positions.

And this proves what? I think McCain's an honorable enough man to live up to his word. You're just being typical you and trying to spin it to support your ridiculous assertions.
My problem with this is that Rick Warren, a pastor I used to trust, and whose book I own, have read and really liked, stood up there and point-blank lied about McCain being in the building and in isolation.

Well he was, for half of it.
I bought his book, read the first two chapters, then put it down. I don't like preachy books.

And yet, when the subject is politics, you'll preach all day about how liberals are wrong about everything.

Different kind of preachy. And liberals are wrong about pretty much everything.

Well, I'm glad we had your leader GWB to lead us to this high point in US history.
We had some awful bad times under that stupid liberal Bill Clinton.
let's don't go there (the Klinton's).
but since you brought 'slick' up, a question:
in light of the recent NATIONAL ENQUIRER investigative report,
is the dnc gonna to allow Edwards to attend and speak at the upcoming party convention?

Since when has Bush been a conservative? Socially, yes. Fiscally, no. I lean more heavily towards fiscal instead of social conservatism.
You also forgot the part that it was a conservative congress (back when Republicans were conservative) for 6 of Clinton's 8 years, and it's congress that passes bills, budgets, etc. The president only submits pieces of legislation and gives the final approval. Clinton went with the polls and never really had any major events during his presidency.
My problem with this is that Rick Warren, a pastor I used to trust, and whose book I own, have read and really liked, stood up there and point-blank lied about McCain being in the building and in isolation.
Come on GN... give Rick some credit. Do you really think that Rick went around to see where everyone was? He has a staff that does that. I don't believe for a minute that Rick knew where anyone was but that perhaps he knew what the plan was.

Warren did not lie. He assumed. He stated tonight on Larry King that he was told that McCain was about 10 minutes away from the venue, and the program started about 15 minutes later, so he assumed that McCain had arrived and was in isolation.
He also stated that Obama had advanced warning of one question that he did not have time to give McCain.
Really, this whole issue is a ridiculous thing to get upset about. This was the most honest forthright discussion with the candidates that I have seen in some time. I was impressed with both. I hope they do more of this.

I just feel that, if the man is going to make such a statement on national television, and lead everyone to believe that the other candidate can't hear the answers, then he should be sure of that.
He also should have told us upfront he gave the candidates advance access to some of the questions.
In both of those instances, he either lied or misled the public. Neither does wonders for his credibility.
However, those issues aside, I agree with MB that it was one of the best discussions I've seen, bar none, with the candidates.
Maybe he should have gone personally and checked up on everything but speaking as someone who oversees large training events and speaking engagements frequently, I typically trust those who are around me to do much of the logistics. Often we have plans that we set into place and I assume that things are going as planned only to find out later that it did not go as I planned. I wouldn't consider that being dishonest, it is just tal vez a little misinformed. What I would consider dishonest is once he is presented with the truth if he tried to hide the truth or cover it up. I also don't have problem with him giving them a heads up on some topics but perhaps not the actual questions.
I just tend to believe Rick over the pundits trying to make news off of this.
You're just being typical you and trying to spin it to support your ridiculous assertions.

Such a statement from anyone else might steam me, but you saying it is pretty damned funny.
