With Alan A. out of town this week and not providing us with his daily Rice Updates, and with MK understandably focusing on football, there's now less than 98 hours and counting before the baseball signing deadline. Any word on the status of Trey Haley and Rendon?
One might think that if the Indians are holding off until as close to the 15th as possible that they are going to exceed slot money on Haley by a significant amount. Either that or Haley's demand is so out of line that negotiations are deadlocked. But then, what the heck do I know?

There is no way Haley, as the #78 pick, can possibly exceed the slot level by more than Marshall (#200 pick) did. Consequently, if the Commissioners Office has allowed the announcement of deals such as Marshall's (receiving $875,000 bonus from the Yanks vs. $150,000 max slot money for a 6th round pick), then I cannot believe Haley has a deal yet. No question, Haley is seeking first round money in excess of $1MM, but there have already been multiple players selected below him in the draft that have signed for over $1MM. I'd still be shocked if he doesn't ultimately sign by the deadline on Friday, but at this point I don't think the delay is due to approval being held back by MLB.
Kendall just reported that the Indians just signed UC-Irvine pitcher and their 22nd round selection to a $725,000 signing bonus. If true, I can't imagine they're not going to shell out the $1+MM for Haley.
In somewhat of a surprise, the 22nd round selection of the Cleveland Indians has signed a pro contract, ending his collegiate career at UC Irvine. According to my source, Stowell signed for $725K.
Stowell was expected to go back to school earlier this summer, but a very strong summer on the mound made him a top priority for the Indians.

...unless that was the cash that was intended for Haley...
a little wishful thinking on my part. I think he'll sign. 2nd rounders going to school rarely happens.

I agree with you, but there's always the possibility. Afterall, no one expected Harvey to show up at Chapel Hill last year (and he would have been a 1st rounder if not for his commitment to UNC).
If Stowell signed for $725K, Cleveland couldn't seriously offer Haley much more than slot at $550K+/-. If I were him, I'd parlay that $550K into a 3 year stint at Pitching U where Mom, Dad and all your friends can come watch you pitch, make it to 3 CWS, follow in the footsteps of someone like Humber, for example, and get 10X bonus money as a top first rounder in 2011. But then, I went to Rice so I must be smart!
$725K for a 22nd-rounder? The whole idea of unenforced slot recommendations, obviously flawed from the beginning, is now an absolute farce. Either make them legitimate, enforced limits or don't pretend to have limits. The only thing it has accomplished is provide cover for poor decision-making by the likes of the Astros.
As for Haley, I also expect him to sign, but I feel a lot better about our chances now than in June. Well, we'll know for sure by Saturday.
According to this, still waiting on Haley...
http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf...aches.html
Countdown: Brad Grant, the Indians director of amateur scouting, has until Friday to sign No. 2 pick Trey Haley and No. 5 pick Zach Putnam. Haley, who has a scholarship to Rice, is a high school right-hander from Texas. Putnam, a right-hander/third baseman, is a junior from the University of Michigan.
"We're optimistic we'll get them signed," said Grant.
2nd rounders going to school rarely happens.
True, but Jeremy Sowers I believe was a #1 pick who turned down the Reds to play three years for Vanderbilt. It does happen from time to time.
BA reports today that Trey Haley may get a seven-figure bonus.
Status of the unsigned in the Top 10 Rounds
He "may get" that bonus because that's what he is likely (and appropriately so) demanding, as would anyone else in his position. If the Indians do sign Haley it will no doubt be for over $1MM. That's not exactly new news, nor does it mean he WILL sign. Note-- they don't yet list him as "reportedly close to signing", as they do for several others; meaning there is still hope (even if only a ray at this point).

If he has a 7 figure offer, it sounds like he gets to make a win-win decision in the next two days. Good for Trey.
A few years back Micah Owings (Rockies) and Tyler Greene (Braves) were second round picks who turned down sizeable bonuses to attend Georgia Tech.
don't think they were 7 figure sizable.
Sounds to me like the Indians are pretty much ready to cave in to Haley's demands. Glad the kid had a good "adviser" to help him through the negotiations, but sad to realize he won't get to wear the old English navy blue "R".
The Indians just signed their 5th round pick, Zach Putnam of Michigan, to a reported $650,000. Also, earlier today, they signed TJ House away from Tulane (where he had committed).

Haley is the only remaining unsigned Indian. Let's hope beyond hope it remains that way 24 hours from now.
Unfortunately for us (though expected from the beginning), the latest from BA......
From BA:
"Industry sources also expect Cleveland to announce two more high-priced signings Friday, with Central Heights High (Nacogdoches, Texas) righty Trey Haley (second) getting a seven-figure bonus and Picayune (Miss.) Memorial High lefty T.J. House (sixth) receiving an $860,000 bonus."
Rendon will be on campus
Great to hear that. He should be a contributor from day 1
Will tomorrow be the day we know for sure who is playing and who won't?
This is the list of HS players drafted from Shelby's site:
Trey Haley
Brett Marshall
Anthony Rendon
Taylor Wall
Jeremy Rathjen

Yes, Guy, we'll know for sure by tomorrow. However, if in fact, Rendon has already made his decision to arrive at South Main for Orientation Week this weekend, then Haley is the only real question mark. In all likelihood, from the reports we've gotten, there will be absolutely no surprises. Those expect to turn pro will do so, and those expected to wear the OE "R" will do so (though I'd still love to pleasantly surprised re. Haley).
Seems like there will be some OF positions that are wide open next year with Luna/Gayhart/Dodson moving on... With Mozingo the only lock, it should be fun to watch the guys we have back in addition to Rathjen, Sultzbaugh, Fuda, and possibly even Rendon/Holt battle it out for a spot.
I had the same thought on Fuda moving to the OF.
It should really be fun watching the competition for the two open OF spots and at catcher. Should be interesting what Coach decides to due with Fuda, as his natural position was 2B. He could compete with Holt and Rendon for a possible opening in the infield (should Buenger move to 1B or either Jess or Diego goes to DH), or with Simmons, Natale, Paylor, Simmons, Rathjen and Sultzbaugh for the two OF spots. One things is for sure-- based on high school and JUCO predigree and performance, Fuda, Holt, Rendon, Rathjen and Sultzbaugh represent perhaps the best crop of incoming hitters we've ever had.
Rendon will be on campus
I greatly apologize for jumping the gun on this. Braves are in contact again. Seems like they're making one last push.

That's quite surprising that the Braves are still pursuing a 27th round pick. Rendon must be either a great negotiator or willing to sign for a lot less than Haley and Marshall have signed for since there's no way the Braves could be throwing a good six-figure bonus to a draft pick that low, even if he was passed over for several rounds because of his Rice commitment.

If Rendon signs, he will get a good six-figure bonus. Teams have already shown a willingness in this draft to sign players taken after the 20th round to to big money if the talent justifies it.

Your post is right on At Ease.
Any tax experts out there that could tell us what % of that signing bonus would be left over on an after-tax basis?
VBO,
I know quite a few players spread their signing bonus over two to four years while they are making their way to the pros. I doubt many are doing the lump sum upfront.

Also, can you still average out several years of income to lessen the tax bite of a sudden increase in $$? I did that for my first several years out of grad school to significant personal benefit, even though I was not in seven- (or even six-) figure territory.
I'd guess the money is ordinary income, in which case it'd be taxed at a 35 percent marginal rate for the amount past $357,700, plus a total of $103,791.75 on the first $357,700. For $1.25 million, that'd be $103,791.75+.35*($1,250,000-$357,700), or a total of $416,096.75 in income taxes. Add another 6.2 percent in Social Security (for now we'll ignore the employer's contribution of same) on the first $102,000 ($6,324) and another 1.45 percent for Medicare on the whole lot ($18,125), and that's a total tax burden of $440,575.45 and an effective rate of 35.2 percent.
If you took the $1.25 million over four years, that's $312,500 annually. The tax burden is harder to figure out because brackets change every year. If rates stayed the same, then it's $88,875.75 in annual income taxes ($355,503 over four years), $6,324 in annual Social Security taxes ($25.296 total), and the same Medicare total of $18,125. The total then is $398,924 and an effective rate of 31.9 percent. Worth mentioning that this is a high-end estimate, too, as the tax brackets go up annually, meaning less income subject to higher rates. Of course, you also could structure the deal differently, so you take a little less than a fourth in the first year and a little more in the fourth in anticipation of the changing tax structure...
And then there's the Obama tax plan, adding another 2-4 percent of Social Security on income above $250,000 (certainly there's some risk associated with delaying income taxes given the talk of such).
Anyway, I think 30-35 percent effective rate is a decent estimate, considering.
Nicely done Amber. Precisely why the players split their money over 2 to 4 years. If you get a million signing bonus, you definitely want to be taxed 250k a year for 4 years versus a lump sum of 1 million. I think lowA ball is 600-800 a month so not much of a factor there of adding to your salary.

I see that the Yankees signed their 27th round pick for $600K so you could well be right about Rendon, At Ease, but I also note that the Braves only coughed up $400K for their 10th round pick. Speaking of the Yankees pick, sounds like Brett Marshall could've gotten a little more than he did.
MLB has lost its mind with the draft. Boras has less than a hour left and has 4 to 5 top end players left to sign. Alonso wants 7 million. Lol he is out of his mind.
I can't believe with all the ridiculous amount of money that yanks are going to get Bleich for slot.
"If Gerrit Cole follows through and goes to UCLA as he has said, then Stanford lefthander Jeremy Bleich will be the Yankees’ top signee from the 2008 draft. The Yankees signed Bleich Friday night, though terms of the deal have not been reported. A supplemental first-rounder, Bleich reportedly did not exceed MLB’s bonus recommendation for his No. 44 slot, believed to be $863,000.
Bleich missed about half the season for the Cardinal with elbow tendinitis, but pitched well in the postseason to help lead Stanford back to the College World Series, including throwing six shutout innings to beat Cal State Fullerton in a super-regional. The Louisiana native, if healthy, would instantly become the best lefthanded pitching prospect in the Yankees system."

BA reports that Bliech actually signed for only $700K, which would be less than Marshall. Crazy!!!
The point is the Braves are not the Yankees, and do not have that type of money to throw around...and Rendon is not a pitcher (who typically command greater bonuses relative to slot). Could be wrong, but based on Atlanta's signings to date, I would be very, very surprised-- shocked, in fact-- if the Braves final offer was more than $225,000 - $250,000, and probably slightly less than that. And while that's certainly nothing to sneeze and represents significant money to a high school senior and his family, I just don't see how that translates into greater value than 3 - 4 years of college experience (and the maturity and personal/social growth that allows), a potential Rice degree and the opportunity to further develop your baseball skills-- and market value-- playing for one of the elite coaches and programs in the country. It's one thing accepting the type of money that Haley and Marshall received, but that's 4 - 6 times the money that Rendon is likely to receive should he decide to go pro....and as a 29th round draft pick, he will not be given the benefit of the doubt (or accelerated advancement) as he travels through the minor league system.
Tough decision regardless, and I think we all wish him the best whatever that decision might be. However, based on history, one would think his odds of ultimately getting to the majors would be better if he played 3 seasons at Rice...his market value will likely be higher; perhaps much moreso (assuming he continues to excel on the field)...and there is absolutely no question he'd enjoy himself and his life experiences much more.
Nationals are clueless. They don't sign crow!!! Are you kidding me?? Wow so close for the stros to pick crow and nationals choke at signing deadline. The nats sign a 15th rounder lefty outfielder from tulane for a million!! What a bunch of tards.
Posey said show me the money!!!! 6.2 bonus no back laden guarantee. just a huge chunk of taxable money! ;-)

What's strange is that Crow is NOT going back to Mizzou, but rather will be playing in the Independence League for a year. That's even crazier.
I wonder if he figured he would definitley turn pro and started to sign outside company contracts that would make him ineligible?
Scheppers is going to be in 09 draft mix also. wow pitchers draft next year.

Well be shocked. It was definitely more than you thought but it was still not enough in the end. He'll be on campus.
Ricebball, that's great news to hear that Anthony has made the decision to play for WG and the Owls. Obviously (and not too objectively), we all feel he made the "right" decision based on the entirety of the picture (as I tried to detail in my previous post); not the least of which is the vast difference in life experiences between a college scholarship athlete and a low minor league player. We've all heard great things about Anthony, and have been keeping tabs of his on-field exploits since he committed to Rice last November. We look forward to seeing him at The Reck beginning with Fall Practice in about 6 weeks, and having him be a big part in extending our current string of 5 College World Series appearances in the last 7 years.
BTW, a big welcome to The Parliament and becoming part of our extended Rice family.
Well be shocked. It was definitely more than you thought but it was still not enough in the end. He'll be on campus.
YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually woke up twice last night thinking about this -- not sure whether that's just the sign of an overzealous fan or just plain sad. Whatever the case, Rendon on campus is awesome.
While I would have loved to see him go pro, in the end I think this will be best for him being in one of the top baseball programs in the nation. It's going to be a fun ride!

I'm sure it was a terribly tough decision, especially if Anthony's sitting there...REALLY wanting to sign. That said, I'm betting that 3 years from now, (and all years beyond), you all look back and say, "I can't believe we almost didn't get to experience these "Rice" years".
Congrats! Looking forward to watching Anthony for the next 3 years!
Now that most of the dust has settled on who is likely going to show up on campus, I'll take a crack at my (ignorant) pre-Fall opinion on who will play where...take it for what it's worth...

I've seen Rendon play a number of times and in speaking with the OG, I think we can anticipate that Rendon's bat will be in the lineup almost every day. He is really, really going to be enjoyable to watch.
