Independent Part II
CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD
Cal State Bakersfield inaugural season in Division I was a challenging one to say the least with the Roadrunners ending their 26th consecutive winning seasons streak. Ron Cottrell begins his 18th season at Houston Baptist and is poised to have his most exciting one by far as the Huskies make the move to Division I this season from NAIA. The Huskies, returning to Division I for the first time since the conclusion of the 1988-89 season, will start their first year of the four year process and will be fully NCAA eligible in the 2011-2012 season. Cotrrell’s up tempo offense has helped the Cougars to back-to-back perfect seasons at Sharp Gymnasium and 22 consecutive home wins. During the NAIA years, the Huskies won 9 conference titles, made 10 straight NAIA national tournaments, including the 2002-2003 season which saw them reach the No.1 ranking after a 21-3 record. Cottrell’s team averaged 100.4 points per game, third time in 8 years the Huskies led the NAIA in scoring. After dropping basketball for two years, Houston Baptist lured Cottrell away from Arkansas where he was an assistant coach under Nolan Richardson, including the 1990 team which lost to Duke in the Final Four. Under Cottrell, the Huskies have had at least one player named All-American the last 13 years. The Huskies return four starters including star Gordon Wyatt who declared for the NBA draft but never signed with an agent.

Just days before their final game of the season , seven year head coach Jim Casciano told his players he was resigning following a winless season. The Highlanders two years in Division I have been a bumpy ride to say the least going 5-53 in two seasons. In April, Jim Engles, an 18-year assistant coach, most recently at Columbia University, was named the programs new coach. Engles wasn’t left empty handed having four starters return along with one other significant player off the bench.

SAVANNAH STATE
If given the time, Horace Broadnax is building a successful program at Savannah State. Prior to taking over at Savannah State, Broadnax resurrected the Bethune Cookman program, taking a 1-26 team in his first year to a fifth place 10-9 conference team in his second season capped off being named the MEAC Coach of the Year in the 1999-2000 season. Broadnax returns three starters plus three reserves from last season and could be in position for a winning season. The Tigers finished with the most wins since 1995-1996 and best record since joining Division I in 2002. Winning at home isn’t a problem as the Tigers are 19-7 the last two years but an abysmal 5-26 on the road. Savannah State’s hopes of one day getting in the MEAC depend on how they do on the court.

UTAH VALLEY STATE
Utah Valley State recently finished its four year reclassification process to Division I and now looks to keep building its program. Hunsaker has brought attention and success to Utah Valley State in transitional years when some teams struggle. Two years ago, Hunsaker led the Wolverines to a 22-7 season, the best record by a Division I independent since Notre Dame in 1985-86. During the offseason Hunsaker was rewarded for his success with a five year contract renewal. His services haven’t gone unnoticed nationally either as he was named Independent Coach of the Year three straight years. In the Wolverines first two seasons with a full Division I schedule they compiled back-to-back 16 win seasons. In the last 25 years, only three teams making their initial jump to Division I play have ever won 16 games.

SOUTH DAKOTA
Twenty-one years ago, David Boots took over a struggling program and molded it into one of the best Division II programs. Boots, who also handles the athletic director duties, recently won his 400th game at South Dakota and 500th career game overall. Of the 15 seasons of 20+ wins, 14 have come under Boots. Boots inherited the program in 1988, which hadn’t had a winning season since 1978-79, and has guided the Coyotes to twenty consecutive winning seasons, including five straight Division II national tournament appearances. That streak appears in jeopardy as Boots moves his team into Division I play this season and will likely struggle as they begin their journey towards the 2012-2013 season when they are fully eligible for NCAA postseason play.
