I have heard from many sources that back in the pre-Schnellenberger days, Sports Illustrated published an article in which they advocated UM abandon football altogether.

My question is, did SI really publish such an article, or is that a myth? And if it really happened, who wrote the article? What issue was it in?

Thanks.
And let me be clear that I am specifically *Not* referring to the 1995 article. what I am asking about would have happened in the 70s, if it happened at all.
They probably confused what happened in the 70s and SI article in 95. So I say it is a myth. There were talk about dropping football in th 70s. It had nothing to with SI. It had more to do with UM losing and attendence at an all time low. UM was not even on college football radar back then, so I doubt SI would had wasted its time writing a article on UM during that time frame.
If you want no more info about this Check this book out:

It tells the whole story about UM went from almost dropping football to one of the Elite programs. Great Read.[/quote]
Thanks, PC.

I had never heard of that book before. Will definitely get it.

And on that thought, albeit completely non-UM-related, let me just give a quick plug to one of the all-time great college-football books: "Fumble" by James Kirby. Inside story on the Bear Bryant/Wally Butts/Saturday Evening Post scandal back in 1963. Howard Schnellenberger was Alabama's OC at the time of the events described...
