I don't know, my phone is blowing up with text messages from friends in M-town. Man I hope he goes down in flames. Mostly just saying it's a rumor.
07-17-2008, 01:49 PM
And if it's going to be the title of thread, can we spell the man's name correcty?: Herenton.
07-17-2008, 02:21 PM
seriously, folks...i've been asked by a media friend if i've heard anything through this board, or any other pipeline. something's going on for this many people to be talking today...

he resigned & I practically threw a party that night...I'm holding off on my celebrations this time until I know a little more.
we've all been hearing for years that his number with the FBI will be coming up...but for this many people to be talking this much on one given day........i'm cautiously optimistic?
07-17-2008, 02:34 PM
I never thought that I could have this low of an opinion of a person, but I can honestly say that the world would be a better place without him. Please let this be the real thing!
07-17-2008, 02:43 PM
I will be one happy Memphian if this happened. Please Please let it be true.
The real question is.. who would replace him?? How would that work?

when he resigned, the CFO was going to take over until the special election was held...that would mean Keith whatever-his-name-is, i guess? or wait - i take that back - a city councilperson was going to be interim for 30 days, THEN the CFO took over.
where's JMS when you need him? he knows more of the ins & outs of this than i do.

You would think that anybody could do a better job than him. You never know..
I think we should make the Mayor of Memphis a job that would pay like a head coach. I am sure we could attract a proven good man or woman if we paid like we do head coaches these days.

Quitter. I'm not giving up. Rumors of this magnitude always turn up SOMETHING.
07-17-2008, 03:53 PM
all the feds are denying that it's happening...
i've heard this from MANY other people now, not just from this board, and not from people who know each other. how does a rumor like this get legs so quickly if SOMETHING weren't going on, I wonder?
maybe something is ABOUT to happen. i have no idea.

It should have been out by now if it was true. Some media outlet would have rush with breaking news.

Ok this is what I know...
About 4pm I got a call from one of my best friends whose fiancee is an attorney for a firm that has some ties to him and/or the city. Per him per her, the FBI indictment is for 15 counts and is imminent.

Either something is up, or this rumor thread is making Channel 3 news at 10. The report isn't about what's happened, it's about the rumor.
07-17-2008, 09:15 PM
I think if there is any truth to the rumor, then we will have a break in press conference led by the FBI.
Untill something like that happens, its just rumor but awfully suspicious.
I am scared to get my hopes up but if the man is as guilty of as much as most think, what a day it will be!

Interesting to re-read Jackson Baker's column from a few weeks ago about a press conference that Herenton gave.
http://www.memphisflyer.com/memphis/Cont...id%3A45264
"His primary task on Thursday, however, was more pointed. Charging that the recent federal prosecutions of his former protégé Joseph Lee and others were but political assaults on blacks in general and himself in particular, Herenton was clearly organizing his base in advance of a rumored future indictment relating to city contracts awarded to mayoral associates."

It all started when it was mentioned on WDIA radio this morning. Don't know if it came from a caller or a radio host. The DA's office denies anything is happening today concerning Hernton.
EDIT: Of course that doesn't necessarily mean it didn't happen. One possible scenario is that the grand jury handed down some indictments and the DA has yet to act on it.

Without getting myself jammed up too bad, I can tell you for a fact that the current head, My Harrison, was brought here for taking away the "the whites are out to get me" card. Several FBI personnel who were specialists in things like pedophiles were moved to bring in white collar crime guys. Going back almost three years, they have been on this with an eye towards the top dogs.

All i know is i feel like something is up. When they let lee and ford off the hook a couple weeks ago, it seemed strange to me. Maybe the fbi was able to use some info from those two to get a bigger fish.
Maybe there was nothing to it, i don't know. I kind of half pay attention to the local news these days. Its too embarrassing and depressing for me.

From all of the speculation, it likely would be federal and not county indictments. So the DA wouldn't be involved.

this rumor isn't just on this thread....i got calls from people who aren't even sports fans, much less tiger fans.
thaddeus matthews posted this....he's a nut, but he sometimes gets some correct info:

IS IT IF OR WHEN WILL WILLIE HERENTON BE INDICTED?
My cell has rung all day asking me whether or not I had any info on Mayor Willie Herenton being indicted. My first call came this morning as I eat breakfast downtown on Beale stating that someone had called in on a local radio station stating that Herenton had been indicted on 13 counts. I immediately got on the phone but could not concerned the statement as fact, but throughout the day I spoke with several sources in law enforcement that stated that Herenton had been taken away in handcuffs earlier on Thursday.
Sources within city hall swear that FBI agents were in the mayor's office early this morning, they also state that agents went to Herenton's South Memphis home also this morning. The word is not if Herenton is going to be indicted but when, and that some close to Herenton are worried if some of his dirt may get on them. I can believe this knowing that someone very close to the mayor wanted to talk to me in April,in fact even came to my birthday party to let me know that there was something that I needed to know. But we were never able to hook up.
Along with the mayor's involvement with E.W. Moon I was told today that the Feds may also be looking at whether the old Greyhound Bus terminal was sold secretly to Herenton Investments who in turn sold it to E.W. Moon who in turn sold it to MATA to house the trolley cars.
While everything that has been stated today is rumor I do know from a very reliable source that late this evening (Thursday) between 7:30 and 8:00 Herenton was seen leaving the office of attorney Ruby Wharton.
WHATS YOUR VIEW ON TODAY'S RUMORS?

This rumor sure does make dealing with this heat, a little bit easier.
I can just see the proud and arogant Willie now, as he is led away in cuffs.
Sweet sweet revenge for what he has done to what was once a great city!
