"The Happening" is an annual event held in the West Monroe convention center for Tech fans to discuss Tech. Speeches are given about academics and athletics. It's the biggest offseason event of the year. Last year 1200 folks showed up and they ran out of room, so this year they moved it into the main arena.
Anyhow, Dooley mentioned at a meeting in Ruston that big things would be announced at the Happening this year. Ruston insiders have stated that:
"There will be an upgrade to the south endzone facility, to include upgrades of the fieldhouse and the addition of "club" seating.
Also: Part of the plan is a new Lady Techster softball complex at the top of the hill across from the intramural center with a multi-sports dressing room facility next door for softball, track, tennis, etc. New intramural fields to replace those taken by the new construction. Stadium Drive would be eliminated by this construction. I'm sure there's more to the plan but that's the part I'm familiar with. The new softball stadium would be completed before Tech hosts the 2010 WAC Tournament.
Most of the area Tech owns north of JAS will be the new research park and the lake.
Also Dooley is on record saying we will have a video board for the 2009 football season.
These facility upgrades are making my head spin. Never before has so much happened so fast in Tech Athletics. I decided to make a list based on info from different web sites and press pieces on recent improvements.
The south enzone upgrade project - planned
The video board - planned
Brand new turf - replaced due to a warranty-has stripes in endzone instead of paws
New website, includes downloadable ringtones and phone backgrounds, online ticketing
New logos, including the creation of a new font and wordmark
New Nike contract
New football locker room, Dooley raised over 500K in 4 months on the job for this
New MBB locker rooms and offices
WBB got a new locker area and professional upgrade to their locker and lounge facilities
New "Karl Malone Court" which is spectacular
New weight room for basketball
ATAC "plan" in place for more basketball upgrades
Tech 2020 athletics plan put in place with real goals
External Affairs Strategic Plan
New softball scoreboard done already
New softball field planned (see above)
Planned multi sports dressing rooms, also rumored to include women's sports offices
New Baseball scoreboard and press boxes, plus a small scoreboard behind the plate
New positions added: COO for AD office, asst str+conditiong and academic support for football, Karl Malone for bball
Upgraded meeting rooms to make them more functional
Cleaned up the fieldhouse to make a more "businesslike" attitude
New tennis courts
New track complex with adjustable seating that switches to face tennis
New intramural sports facility that includes pools for NCAA competition teams
-also includes new bowling facility since our Wbowling team is good
New permanent tailgating pavillion, bathrooms and storage included.
More summer meetings where Dooley tries to garner more fan support
"Champs" renamed to LTAC and the benefits modified, major push for more members
Spring game renamed to "T-Day" and was a huge success with great attendance
(the 5103 attendance beat 43 other D-1 schools)- That's up from a few hundred
The "Game Day Experience" is planned for the MSU game
(includes stuff like wind screens, banners, and a general "dressing" of the stadium)
6 home football games for first time EVER
BCS football team playing us in Ruston for first time EVER
Also don't forget that a few stalwart fans got our scout site, http://www.bleedtechblue.com up and running with great stories. http://www.latechreport.com is another new fan site.
Although Dooley isn't credited with every improvement, I think it's safe to say he is an excellent AD for his vision and the ability to carry it through to an excellent final product. Some of these changes are small but necessary for a program, such as the website, logos, and online ticketing. People will say "no duh" to that but the old administration just didn't get it. Dooley appears to "get it."
I'm sure there's some stuff I wasn't able to remember but I just wanted to provide this update because of the excitement of the new plans.
