Reading the thread regarding Birmingham pursuing the olympics, reaffirmed my disdain for such an @ss backward city. Birmingham has missed enough boats to fill an ocean and it's because of naysayers who can always say what won't work and never provide an alternate solution.

Where is the RAPS proposal?

Don't worry B'Ham could build for the next 25 years and still won't be in the same ballpark as Atlanta. To accomplish the things that Atlanta has accomplished takes vision, leadership, and commitment, Birmingham doesn't have any of those qualities. Just a bunch of bickering, divided, and near sighted people who resist change and progress. As a resident of Atlanta, I say thank you and I'm sure Nashville, Charlotte, Jacksonville, and Memphis thanks you as well.

Now list the years that those happened and you will find they didn't all happen at one time, in one big leap. They happened over the past two decades with careful planning, realistic ideas, and smart leadership.

The folks in Statesboro GA will be interested to find that the entire Georgia Southern campus has been transported by some alien force to Atlanta, according to your post. Id advise that you do a little more homework before making such sweeping pronouncements about the megopolis to our east.

Every sporting event that I named occured in the recent past (2 years). I know the venues took time and careful planning but you have to take step one, first. B'Ham refuses to take any steps forward, only backward.

Yes, I know they occured in the past two years which fits perfectly in that timeline I gave of "the past two decades" which also applies to the time it takes to build the facilities and then draw the events.

I know the norm is to isolate the mistake and harp on it but the truth still remains Birmingham is stuck in 1950's when it comes to facilities and attracting national events. I don't need to the research, I live in Atlanta and frequent the facilities and events that I mentioned.

Yes I know I was born in the last century. If I were to go by your logic I would have included the super bowl and olympics but I didn't. Two decades is a lot of time, two years definitely fit in the time frame though, you must have attended kindergarden from day one.

I was thinking of the college that is next to GA Tech but the name escapes me, please forgive my error. I wanted B'Ham to be a better city and worked hard towards that end but when the naysayers defeated progressive thinking, I couldn't take it anymore.

You listed sports teams and facilities they play in. Well, guess what? Those facilities have been built in the past two decades (Georgia dome planning started years before it was built so it fits in that timeline)!! Hooray for me!

By the way, I still have a certificate from kindergarten proving I had perfect attendance and was an outstanding certificate. Ma and Pa are so proud of those accomplishments.

I must have missed your comments backing the ideas that MLS is a perfect fit for this city and that UAB with proper facilities can be a more properly used asset to the metro area's entertainment scene. These are the current boats that are setting sail at this moment yet they are ignored as we throw money at pie in the sky.

The Olympics is a whole different aircraft carrier. I'm glad to see folks lining up against plain idiocy whereas you take it as a time to call everyone naysayers.

We're sick of crap like this. We've got enough paperwork related to feasability studies over the past 25 years and never have anything to really show for all that money wasted. This is a perfect way to funnel money to your friends. This Olympic talk is nothing more than the king of all pocket linings. Was Larry's booklet he was carrying around today free. Nope, but I bet his printing buddy is happy though. This makes as much sense and is as doable as a feasibility study to build an escalator to the moon.

I'm all for UAB and what's best for our University but this is about the city of Birmingham and the people who won't let it progress and dream. My point exactly, Birmingham misses all boats so why not the things you mentioned.

I wouldn't and don't point out problems without trying to do something about them first. If you had read my ealier post, I said I tried and was not successfull in my attempt and that's why I left. One last parting shot and a heavy dose of reality for everyone arguing in the Olympic threads: Jefferson County is on the verge of the LARGEST MUNICIPAL BANKRUPTCY in the history of the United States. They are past due on $100 MM in bond payments and are being faced with a plethora of lawsuits as we speak. Furthermore, the JeffCo Commission is looking to help pay for the past-due debt payments out of the general fund and are also having trouble finding other ways to make the payments. With that said, you have a mayor, who is accused of taking kickbacks tied to those bonds, floating the idea of trying to get an Olympics here and willing to spend at least $250,000 of the city's money on a feasibility study. If what I just typed isn't sobering for you guys then I cannot go any further in defending my stance on the mayor and his idiotic ideas while his city is about to collapse.

Back to Langford, if he was my mayor I would be seriously pissed right now that he's wasting his time with the press talking about the Olympics and even going so far to have the application printed out in addition to presenting that to various people. His main concern right now should be doing whatever it takes to keep JeffCo out of bankruptcy. Once, and if, that is accomplished he can get back to his pipe dreams.

The bond issue is very serious and will have LONG TERM consequences for Birmingham and other muni's if not resolved.

And no, I'm not trying to make it a "right and wrong" thing (well, with the exception of the last two decade thing with UniteAllBlazers).
