I must say that he has officially lost his mind.
Seriously? Link to something quoting that please.
Are elected officials required to take drug tests?

I'm stunned. I didn't think he could sound any crazier.

yeah, sounds crazy.
but,
then I consider Salt Lake City hosted an Olympics, and....................
You gotta' give the man credit. At least he dreams big.
Quote:"Why not Birmingham?"
Um, Larry, do you really want that question answered?

Quote:"We are an international city."
No, you are not. Birmingham's idea of diversity is if you go to school in Mountain Brook but have friends in Hoover.

Where are you going to get the money to pay for the infrastructure costs? Birmingham has to support those improvements once the Olympics is gone. Hell, you can't even manage Jeff Co bonds the way you should so why would anybody give you money for something on a much larger and more risky scale?

Say NO to drugs and focus on fixing/improving your city as it is.

I love the idea of dreaming big, but I think this is too far out there. Prove me wrong, Larry.
On a side note, LL has always dreamed big. I attended a speech that he hosted about 15 years ago. Then, he told the group that he would one day be mayor of B'ham, then gov, then pres.
You know what? Props! From a complete pragmatist: don't stop the dreams! "Let's do something" was his campaign slogan...and I say damn right! Birmingham is at the point where thinking outside the box is the best approach...and considering our history it's a refreshing thing to hear!

They hosted a winter Olympics and had the appropriate facilities (Park City anyone?), not to mention the appropriate leadership.
Is this really so horrible considering that the Olympic committees in charge have rejected bids for a lot of cities?

This is what it took for you to realize he's nuts? You really should get out more.
Why not bring the Olympics here? If Atlanta can do it, so can Birmingham.

With some of you guys, Langford is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.
Um, ATL has a metro population that is over 5x the size of Birmingham's. That's a good starting point.
Regardless of all the turmoil surrounding Visionland, Langford did make it happen. If B'ham wants to compete for the Olympics their are several issues including infrastructure, transportation, hotels, etc. that need to be addressed. Crime, in my opinion, should not be an issue b/c every city has crime. Also, Chicago has a good chance of landing the games in 2016 and they have more homicides than B'ham. When Atl bid for the Olympics, everyone thought it was a long shot. 12 years later, we all know that the investments paid off.
Again as I said I think our chances are slim and none of getting it but when Langford eats lunch people bitch about where he eats, what was on his plate, how he ate it and say and claim that he didn't pay for the meal. He could find a new fuel to replace gasoline and people in this community would look for ways not to use it and trash the new fuel and say he stole it.

Until this community gets it's head out of it's collective *** and quits poo pooing every damn suggestion and idea and starts looking for ways to make things happen rather than looking for ways to prevent things from happening we will never move forward and will continue to slip into oblivion. There are people that do not want Birmingham to have anything or make any progress. There are also people that if they had their way UAB would not have athletics.
We may never sniff the Olympics but at least he is trying. Us old timers remember the naysayers in regards to first UAB basketball, UAB basketball competing at a high level, and then UAB football. We heard it all. 25 years ago people would have said there is a greater chance of Birmingham hosting the Olympics than UAB fielding a football team and beating LSU much less getting to a bowl.

as another 'old timer', I agree.
I, for one, am glad to see the Mayor "stirring the pot" in a major league effort to get the city to think of "doing" rather than watching others "do". First off, no major outlays happen until the Games are actually awarded to a city. I think 2020 may be too soon, particularly if Chicago gets the Games in 2016, but the effort always attracts worldwide attention in a positive light. It's very superior to our present image in many people's mind- -that of church bombings, police dogs and fire hoses from the 60s.
UAB can be a valuable building partner with the city in this effort and thereby cement our place as a sports force in this part of the state. Who knows? We may not get an OCFB stadium out of it, but we could PROBABLY get significant minor sports facilities upgrades in the process.
I personally think this his WORST idea yet. Let me explain.
L(o)L was on Finescum yesterday (yes my ears almost bled) and talked about how he would make the olympic activities work.

1) He would have us light the torch at vulcan.
2) Have the olympic kayaking in the cahaba.
3) And have track and field at the fairfield arena.

And we wonder why people laugh at us. It's because we have a joke of mayor running around trying to put the cart miles ahead of the horse.

L(o)L if you are reading this, GET US A STADIUM 1st! We'll work on the olympics after that.
I actually think it's a dumb idea but like the idea of stirring the pot. That being said, let's build the damn stadium, fix transportation, build hotels, and fix the schools, (to name just a few) THEN we can set our sights on bigger fish for sometime in the 2030s.
