SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) -- Chad Maclies, the leading scorer and rebounder on the Centenary basketball team this season, was found dead in his dormitory room.

Authorities said the 22-year-old Maclies was apparently talking with his girlfriend over his computer Tuesday, when he suddenly stopped. After no one had heard from him for several hours, friends went to his room and found him lying on the floor and alerted authorities, Fire Department spokesman Brian Crawford said.

Paramedics attempted to revive him but Maclies was unresponsive, police spokeswoman Kacee Hargrave said. Police said there was no sign of foul play or forced entry. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

``In many ways, both on and off the court, Chad was a leader with a big heart, a disarming smile and a can-do spirit,'' Centenary president Ken Schwab said. ``He was a superb young man, a model student-athlete and an integral part of the Centenary family. He will be greatly missed on our campus.''

I was feeling pretty whimsical a minute ago. Not anymore.

If a finely-tuned athlete in his early twenties can up and drop dead, what must that mean for the rest of us?
