But WE have a brand new soccer stadium!!!!!!!!

No offense, but I think I would rather go trick or treating with my 4yr old than to watch that.

Gee, I remember when ETSU played Western Carolina on a Thursday night prime time football game in 1987 on ESPN.
Not ESPN2, there was no ESPN2 then. ESPN.
Granted, ESPN was still somewhat in its infancy. They had just started airing NFL games, for instance.
But nevertheless, it was a forerunner to getting the BIg East Game of the Week on Wednesday that you have now.

Hey, I remember that. WC had the coach who was dying, I think.
05-08-2008, 05:13 PM
Did he have Lou Gehrigs or something like that ?
I think WC beat us up pretty good in that game if I remember.

Yes his name was Bob Waters and he was a very fine coach at WCU and he suffered from ALS. I remember going to the game and I believe ETSU was one of the first teams to play on ESPN during the week. What is very commonly accepted now was unheard of back then. Maybe ESPN or ESPN2 will televise the first game after ETSU reinstates football? I hope so!

Why in the world would they have picked Wofford?! Ugh.
05-09-2008, 02:05 PM
Playoff team last year
05-09-2008, 03:28 PM
Plus I think Wofford upset App last season. That might be what got ESPN's interest.
10-21-2008, 02:09 PM

I remember back in the 80's when Mike Ayers left ETSU for Wofford. We couldn't understand why he will be foolish enough to leave a D-1 program for Wofford. I guess the he knew what he was doing. Wofford is now a good academic school with a nationally known football program.
10-21-2008, 04:16 PM
SoCon has one and sometimes two football games on TV each Sat. They have basketball games nearly every Sat. They get national exposure because their football conference is recognized and rated as the best in the FCS and the basketball has steadily improved.
A-Suck has nothing but a Fri. night game played before a nearly empty high school gym with Sonny Smith and his sidekick making dumb comments.

ETSU failed to give Mike Ayres a multi-year contract after he'd managed to pull things together for football. He took his talents elsewhere.

You could just stop with the phrase, ETSU FAILED.

For those doubting the choice of the game between ASU and Wofford... take a look at what Wofford did to E-loan yesterday. 55-20 and could have scored again. App, three-time defending National Champ, and Wofford who is knockin very loudly on the door. It may not have the glitz and glamour of a BCS game or the marketing appeal of an Alabama/tennessee (my deepest condolences) BUT this will be a darn good football game. If you are a REAL football fan, it would be a shame not to catch this one!!
I can't wait. Our trick or treating will be over early because of this one.

App, I heard a rumor and I want you to tell me if its true. I heard ASU counts all their students in the attendance figures because they pay a student fee. Is this true?
10-28-2008, 12:55 PM
I've had football season tickets to Appy for the last six years and the growth of this program has been tremendous. The tailgating scene is unbelieviable and the crowds are huge. I can easily see 30,000 fans at the game.
For you non believers, come get yourself a grassey bank ticket (only tickets available) and see how a real athletic department and football program operates.

now, now... you know the Buc faithful will be camping out overnight to get tickets to the Milligan game for hoops!
10-28-2008, 11:19 PM
yes its true... if the students pay the student fee and they do count them in the attendence they get in free to all home football games and in fact i think all sporting events... i might be wrong but i know football they do... but if any remeber are students scrubs i think the 5 studnets from etsu lol but thats why they have 10,000 students at the gate before the game... just turn it on espn 2 if you dont feel like gettin to crazy in boone.... this is what i use to dream that etsu had.. but thats the answer to your ?? if you have any more ill let you know
and how do you insert a image in your signature like you have?

I've not gotten a definitive answer on the student count for attendance but I'm pretty sure that they only count people through the turn-styles in terms of students. I do know they have capped hard ticket/walk-up sales due to the Chancellor's desire to allow any ASU student that pays the fee to come, but I really doubt they are putting an automatic 14,000 +/- on the attendance. I also don't know if there is a deadline for students to have to print off their tickets prior to gameday... That type of practice (counting all students paying the fee) would be expected for all of their games/events, if that were the practice. There are a lot more people with season tickets/hard tickets than the potential 10,000 that would be sold to non-students.
Again, the old "paid attendance" versus "turnstyle" attendance.... the controversay rages on... I believe etsu wrote that handbook with basketball attendance.

I just wish ETSU had to "worry" about attendance figures that App has to "worry" about.
10-29-2008, 11:43 PM
my fault i needed to explain it better... okay the students pay the student fee.. before every home game they have to print out a ticket off the computer if they do this they get in the game.. and i think its a counter on the website of printed off tickets...i know they dont get a lump sum total at the top of thier head.. but its like 14,000 students 16,000 people which = 30,000 it might be more pending weather....i think its a awesome plan pay your studnet fees get in free to the 3 time national champ games.. why not if i need to explain it better let me know lol
10-31-2008, 10:28 PM
APP wins 70-21. WOW...you have to figure they move up to #1.

At least one of the Buccaneer brethern was in Boone witnessing the event... He predicted that ASU would score 100, and this was in the 2nd quarter.
I personally hate that Wofford didn't put up a better fight, not like them at all and given the arse-whooping's that they've laid out this year, I would have thought things would have been tighter. ASU's not shown that much "explosion" on both sides of the ball all season, but I think between the momentum, atmosphere, and revenge factor-statement to the James Madison whiners, it would have been hard to contain after half-time.
That's the "best" defense that I've seen from them all year (keep in mind I've only 'seen' the tv games against GaSuthin and Wofford). Armanti Edwards and his crew are amazing. His OLine needs to have a few steaks ready for them!!! They just need to start the engraving on the Peyton trophy for him this year, it would be a shame to pass him over for some senior that's managed to win a couple of games, he is the total package and has been for three years. I still think they spray wd-40 on him!

Great game last night and outstanding atmosphere. I couldn't help but think that could have been, should have been ETSU in that game. There was former ETSU coach Mike Ayers on the sidelines against our former arch rival App State.
And what a great night it would have been for a nationally televised outdoor college football game from east Tennessee. It was a beautiful Halloween night with pleasant temperatures. Seeing the App State band reminded me of our lost ETSU band and the color that goes with college football. The color our campus has lost.
So, when does App State go FBS? They certainly meet the attendance requirements and could probably do pretty well right now. Should the NCAA require schools with a certain average attendance to move up to FBS?

I was there and enjoyed every minute. I hope all the people on this board saw what Appy's athletic program has become, FIRST CLASS. Friday night should put to rest talk of how many fans attend the games, does Appy count all the students, etc.
Can you imagine what it would have been like at ETSU and in Johnson City to have a crowd like Appy had Friday night. This is becoming the norm for Boone and Appy, not the exception. The town, the students, the marching band, the fans, the surrounding communities, everyone is participating and enjoying the thrill of college football.
And yes, I sat and wondered why not ETSU. ETSU doesn't want the kind of program that Applachian State and most mid majors are striving to become, why???? ETSU is fully content to be a low mid-major athletic program, why???? I guess we will never know because the administration and the athletic program are in complete denial and the media doen't have the guts to ask the hard questions.
