According to this site, it looks like we have a center.
Props to Bucfaithful!

One big man down(hopefully it gets officially confirmed soon), one to go.

Anyone heard anything on the Alvin Brown front?
Great news. I'm glad we were able to land a true big guy. I don't think ETSU has had a 6'11 guy since Greg Dennis.
We are still trying to sign Brown.
Does anyone know if Coy was offered a scholarship by any other D-1 schools?
This is great news! Finally we get a true center. Let's be greedy....we need Brown to sign also! Kudos to those that broke this information. I don't think any of us saw this coming, could there be another one out there???
Time will tell, but this class has the potential of being an amazing class. We've used 4 scholarships on high school kids, which I like, and all of them fulfill our needs. If we can sign one more 'big', either juco or h.s., I really like our chances next year.

Now, on to Coy...based on everything I've read about him, he's a smart player that plays within himself. He's not going to make bad shots or dumb decisions. He's going to clog the lane, block shots, rebound, get putbacks, etc. I think this will have the help our lackluster perimeter 'D' as well. With a 7-footer in the paint, our guards won't have to sag as much to help out.

Think abou this too: He's played everyday for 4 years against one of the best high school centers in the country in Tyler Zeller. There's no one in the ASUN currently that is as good as Zeller is now.

That's exactly what we need.

This certainly is good news. Don't know about other D-1 offers, but I've read where Valpo and IUPUI were interested. Surprised Missouri Valley and MAC schools weren't more involved. Of course, I never figured out Missouri Valley schools didn't show more interest in Mike Smith.

From watching a few clips of his team, they look well coached. Seems like he's got a good foundation, and he's from an environment where basketball is king.

Is Coy right-handed? Seems like I saw a photo or video where he appeared to make a shot or two left-handed. Maybe he's just good with both hands, which would be a plus.
Brown visited George Washington this past weekend
If GW offers, they'll be tough to beat. School has a great rep, it's close to home, and has an engineering program (Brown's bio says he's interested in engineering; ETSU doesn't have an engineering program, does it? Of course, quite a few people think they want to be engineers until they get to college and start taking engineering classes. Whew!)

Here's one bright spot: GW's roster from last year lists two 6-10 freshmen and three sophomores who are 6-8 or 6-9. They already have a lot of young big people. Wonder if one of them left, and that's why they got interested in Brown.
ETSU has an Engineering Technology degree program (unless things have changed since I was there and the degree which I have). There are 4 year and 2 yr programs but not a true engineering degree offered. The biggest difference is the technology program does not have the advanced math and sciences an engineering degree requires. But I am sure the programs that are offered in the Technology Dept could catch his interest anyway.
Coy will make his official announcement tomorrow morning!!
sweeeeeet...if there's one positive[/i] thing I've always said about Bartow, its that he can recruit.
He lands this one, along with what we already have... Sollazzo is a true PG, correct? If that's the case, then we've actually met needs with this class. Awesome.
If we land Alvin Brown too, this will be one hell of a class IMHO.
And nobody sees any correlation between this and Bartow having time on his contract?

Incidentily, Tony Skole is operating with NO years left on his contract after this one.

And I'm supposed to believe the safeguard of having four years remaining on a contract is irrelevant to a coach's recruiting success?

Please.

The thing is, this is the only market in America where people would try to argue this point.
Oh no, I agree with you totally here. However, he was recruiting relatively well beforehand. This class does seem to be his most talented out of high school, and I do believe there is a correlation as well.
The problem is at ETSU they are so cheap- for whatever reason- that what is considered to be a necessity at major colleges- four years to work with- is considered a luxury here.

Unless you're the golf coach.
Yall needed to make a solid big man sign...sounds like you got it. I don't know if this kid is as well suited to your system immediately, but you HAVE to have someone in the paint, and now you do. To be honest, I like it when other ASun teams sign good players, because the conference as a whole will rise. From what I have seen, 3 teams have really made an impact on the recruiting trail this year: ETSU, Kennesaw, and Jacksonville. I think those are the three teams with the greatest long term upside as well...you obviously can never count out the Nashville twins, and right now Belmont is the school to beat, but longterm - I think that the three schools I mentioned can out-recruit the Byrd system.
Two good points about this kid.
1.Having played againist Zeller everyday in practice I don't think he is going to be intimadated by anyone he is going to face in the A-Sun.
2. Having played with Zeller he shouldn't be selfish and is used to doing his job and not worrying about his stats and being the MAN. Alot of kids come out of high school after being the best player on their team and can't adjust to not being the center of attention, shouldn't have that problem here.
I think those are very valid points.

So true...the most telling comment in the etsubucs.com write-up was when he said, "Every day I tried to play hard and make him better, which only helped me improve too.”

Kennesaw:
Here's a story about Lipscomb recruiting:

http://lipscombsports.cstv.com/sports/m-...08aaa.html

One of their signees is a big kid from your neck of the woods, Marietta, GA. Are you familiar with him. Wonder how he compares to J.C. Ward, ETSU signee. Also wonder if ETSU and/or Kennesaw were interested in the kid who signed with Lipscomb.

I'm from Alabama, and another Lipscomb signee Wayne Dedrick is from Tuscaloosa. I understand he's pretty solid player.

Also, Belmont signed an Alabama kid, Nick Hedgepeth is his name, I think. He's 6-9 or 6-10. Skinny, but I hear he has nice skills. Probably will be a classic Belmont player
Lots of valid points about this class, hopefully they can keep them all happy, and everyone that signed is what they're advertised to be. We definitely don't need anymore Chris Mitchell, Petras Balocka or Blake Mishler type signees.
Matt Shaw, the kid from North Cobb Christian is a 6'7" PF/C I believe. His dad played at Georgia Tech, and at one time had some decent press around the area. I never saw him play, but I heard good things about him as a person and a worker. Should be a typical Lipscomb post player. Not the most athletic, but big strong, and a bruiser with good touch around the basket....Hedgepeth played at the same high school as one of Kennesaw's former players (Dusty Moore). My guess is it takes Hedgepeth a few years to contribute, but I could be wrong.

Never say "y'all needed to make a solid big man sign."

Always say "YINZ needed to make a solid big man sign."

"Yinz" or "Younz" is the correct term.

That aint how we speak here in the South...try that junk on some of your Yankee friends, but not me :)
I recently heard an East Tennesseean use yinz.

It's refreshing to see that for all it's faults, East Tennesseeans still use better grammar than Georgians, who, evidently, are too busy eating moon pies and barking at the moon.

Hey now, what did moon pies ever do to you?

Exactly, there is nothing better than the 6 A.M. smell of fresh cut grass, a moon pie and an R.C. Cola.
Who's mowing the freaking grass at 5:30am?
Football coaches.
I heard Brown signed with Jacksonville

I am not sure how good the Shaw kid is but I know KSU never recruited him. I believe if we wanted him we could have got him because his head coach was an assistant at KSU when we won the DII championship.

Shaw kid is pretty good - I think it was more of a system thing ksubbfan. I wouldn't look at him not signing with Kennesaw as a slight on the kid. You are correct that his coach was a former assistant...I just think that he wasn't exactly the makeup that Kennesaw was looking for. Seems like this offseason Kennesaw was going after tall athletic SFs and big men. Shaw is kind of a tweener big man that would have trouble against big time competition, but could be VERY good in ASun competition. I think Shaw and JC Ward are both kind of on that level...should be great ASun players, but would struggle again big time frontcourts because of limitations.
You are insulting your avatar by talking basketball, KSU.
Nothing like shooting hoops while jamming to some VR in the Ipod.
I'm sure it ranks right up there with reading the Torah at a Snake Handlers revival.

Are you referring to Alvin Brown? Bummer if that is true.

For what it's worth, here is JU's latest press release regarding signees, and it doesn't mention Brown. This was done about a week ago:

http://judolphins.cstv.com/sports/m-bask...08aaa.html

Certainly is possible that he has signed, and it just hasn't been announced yet. Think I read somewhere that one or two JU assistants have strong ties to Maryland/DC area.

The kid seems to have a chance to become a nice player. Would definitely like to have him.

If Bucs don't sign him, I'm guessing we'll wind up with a JC inside guy. Should still be a good recruiting year, but Brown is a very interesting prospect.

I still think we need a JC inside guy, I wish we didn`t need to go that route, but past recruiting classes have set up the need to land a quality big man that is ready to score and score from day 1.

This still hasn't been reported anywhere. Jacksonville's website has an article about 3 signings but not this kid.

R

So he signed with JMU? Well crap. We still need another big.
Bummer. Maybe we'll steal somebody late or land a transfer. Someone a while back mentioned Leon Martin, a forward from SW Mempis CC. I wonder if we're still considering him?

Also, I'm a little surprised (and happy) that nobody has transferred, or presumably they would have done so by this point? This should help with continuity next year.

If you look up punk in the dictionary there is a picture of Duke Crews there. I'd rather have Petras Balocka back than Duke Crews.
