None of us would be reading this board if we weren't pretty serious fans. The statue obviously provokes varied reactions from even those fiercely loyal to UAB. Views expressed on here about that statue aren't going to change any average public opinion that is eventually settled on.
Shouting down people with views that are dissenting from your own is the stuff of mob rule. We should be better than that. If someone that worked on getting it made, paid for, etc., gets their feelings hurt, that is part of the territory that comes with responsibility - along with the many kudos I'm sure they are receiving as well. If some people think the emperor has no clothes, instead of ignoring it, they are going to tell him. If people took the same attitude that has been encouraged on there regarding negative opinions about 13 years ago we might still have a gay (not that there is anything wrong with that) Viking as our mascot. Thank goodness they didn't.
I don't know if disdain for the statue is an effect of holding UAB to a higher standard, or if we can expect a far more tortuous onslaught of comments later from those that aren't fans of UAB at all - like when visiting teams get a good look at it. Only time will tell.
For the naysayers, you have to adjust your frame of reference and the thing becomes endearing. It's silly fun. It's going to make an impression on everyone that sees it, and there I'm sure will make for plenty of great stories for years to come.
