I couldn't decide before the game who to root for. On the one hand, I actually like Memphis and really like watching you guys play. You, like the Vols, play a non-traditional style that the "classical" fans quickly dismiss as streetball. Cal's a funny dude and I enjoy the back and forth between he and Pearl.
On the other hand, I realize that a Memphis win would bring all the immature fans out and the trash talk would be taken to another level.
But as I watched the game, I just thought it was funny that UCLA just had no idea what it was like to play against a team that was simply more athletic and better. I think the play that summed up the entire game was after it was pretty much decided (Memphis up 13 or so) and Collison drove to the hoop. He could have taken an easy layup but was so worried about a Tiger coming over to block the shot that he just chucked it up quickly and missed. He was
SCARED.
Congrats on a great game. Rose is playing, the last few weeks, like the player we all knew he was. Simply dynamic and better than whoever he goes against.
I'm looking forward to the game against KU. You would have killed UNC. I think you'll beat KU but it will be a terrific game to watch. The two best teams, IMO, all year are going at it.
I haven't looked forward to a Finals like I do this one in a long time.
Good luck!

One of the "immature fans" here to talk trash.
Thanks for the compliments on our team. The last three games--Michigan St., Texas, and UCLA (particularly UCLA), the teams have just looked stunned. I have no clue what their coaches said about the Tigers--maybe they read them espn articles lol--but the games gave the impression that they had no clue what hit them. They just looked lost.
Who is this skunk at the picnic? That just about sums it up.
Did you see in the middle of the 1st when Lovehandles looked over at the coach with a "what do I do?" look on his face? Howland just shook his head.
My favorite was when CDR posterized Fatty on that dunk.
I would have preferred UNC as well, we would have killed them.
If both Memphis and Kansas bring their A game--and the Tigers will--it should be a classic.
Go Tigers!

It's hard for us to accept congratulations from a Vile but in this case we will. No seriously, we hate y'all.
Now really seriously, Thanks.
The college basketball world has seen what the future holds for any forward thinking coach. The traditionalists are being forced to re-evaluate their positions on x's and o's style of play. There are only so many set plays a coach can call before the opposition knows how to set up for them. That style of play limits creative and "ad-lib" play.
Cal does his coaching primarily in practice and look what the rewards are. His style empowers the players and gives them an ownership stake in the entire process unlike a traditionalist like Howland. He cannot "think outside the box" - I hate that term but it's apropo.
It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see many of the lesser known programs emulating our style in the not too distant future.
I wish more Vols fans were like you! Thanks. It will be a great game...
However we will KILL them
Go Tigers!!!
I'm one of the immature ones. I'm glad you enjoyed our school's win, I hope we play well tomorrow night so that we can both enjoy another win. Your coach was on TV yesterday and did not use the opportunity to bash our team too overly much, while our coach, when given the chance, did nothing but praise your team to the heavens. I'm glad you chose to root for us: I once made the same choice while a student in Knoxville.
TigerBill,
No your coach wouldn't bash UT-he is way above that! He would never make any sort of backhanded remark about the Vols--way too classy! What a joke.
Enjoy the moment--it took your coach 8 years to get here and he may not get back.
Most Vol fans understand the shortcomings of the 07-08 Vols. Not nearly long or athletic enough to compete with the top 5-6 teams in the country on a nightly basis. We have however found a way to beat your Tigers 2 years in a row including in your house in what many Memphians considered "the biggest sports event ever played in the city of Memphis".
Pearl has done far more in his first 3 years than your coach ever did in his first 3. And don't give me that crap about how he had more talent-he started 6-4 Dane Bradshaw at power forward his 1st 2 years!
Anyways, enjoy your shining moment on Monday night - you have a great chance because your not playing your daddy (Pearl).

What was it Pearl said? Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. How true...and will ever be....

There is not crying in basketball. I'm sorry UTK was not what you guys believed they were and if hanging your hat on the Memphis win is your high point of your season, then thanks for the compliment. Signature wins mean your opponent is a great one. Now if you need to measure one's sucess by who they lost to. How many did UTK lose? OH that's right this does not apply to the orange nation. You guys got beat by lower level programs too. These kind of things happen even to the great ones. Pop! sorry to burst your balloon.

Interesting. My post was intentionally non-committal, neither damning nor praising Pearl. You chose to take it as a bash. In fact, while Pearl was being interviewed, he showed great restraint in talking about us, you could tell he really wanted to bash, but for the most part he didn't.
In your last two thoughts, you revealed that you are no different than 99.9% of the orange fan base. So, thank you.
Sorry about connor10 he does not represent most Vols fans, again he is probably under the age of twenty. Only one teams fan base is in position to talk trash with Memphis at this point and that's Kansas. Any fan that talks trash to Memphis and Kansas at this point is a clown. I dont think tommorow nights winner is going to spend much time dwelling on a game or couple of games they lost in their regular season. That team will be too busy with parades, David Letterman shows, SI Covers and planning a trip to the White House!!

At this point, regardless of what happens tomorrow night, I don't think either school will have room to talk, win or lose. A championship game is just that, pretty remarkable. My point with Pearl was that he could have slammed Cal more, he has beaten him twice now, and for him that would have had recruiting benefits. And he did do that, to a degree. But he could have done it much worse. Indeed, he stuck it to Donovan worse than Cal. And the used a little self-deprecation. All in all he accomplished his goals, I would say.

I beg to differ africavol. Guys like Connor10 are the rule rather than the exception from my perspective of living in the Memphis area for 43 years. It is guys like you and NYCVol that are the exceptions, not Connor10. There is a reason for the disdain of Tiger fans toward Vol nation, and it is based in the actions and malignant disrespect most UTK fans have for the Memphis Tigers.
TigerBill,
What exactly has Pearl said about Memphis that makes you think he wants to bash them? Calapari's venom toward Pearl and UT in general has been well documented, and thats ok.
What is it about Pearl that you hate so much?
Is he arrogant-yes. Is he annoying to opposing fans-yes. Does he play to the crowd-yes. Does he win-yes. Sounds alot like your coach.
You like your coach and we like ours. Give Pearl 8 years and I guarantee you he will have us in multilple final fours. Calapari partcipated in a few NITs before he had you dancing!
AfricaVol----Keep sucking up to the Tiger fans, your terrific at it!

It must be Knoxville that renders their fans unable to read clearly. As I said, Pearl bashed Memphis a little bit, less than I would have expected given that we recruit against each other. Beyond that, I don't care about that crappy overfunded orange school to the east, not on this day of celebration.
As for AfricaVol, you have shown clearly by your statement that anyone who even attempts to be fair and drop the paternalistic condescension will be ridiculed by the other fans of your school. What a surprise.
What does 99 years of massive overfunding buy for a basketball program? 29 hours at #1.
Connor 10, Pearl inherited Buzz Peterson's talent that's why he had winning seasons in his first 3 years. When Calipari got here to Memphis in 2000 the cupboard was empty. That's why it took a few years for the Tigers to reach the NCAA.
Pearl will not have Lofton, Jajuan Smith and Tyler Smith next year. The Vols will be back to a middle of the pack SEC team. UT had their one great season this year and they blew it in the sweet 16. Now Kentucky and Florida will be back to ruling the SEC.
Riddle me this connor10. If you were a recruit and looked at both the vols and the tigers which would you rather have .....a coach who beats a in state rival and only gets to the sweet 16 or a coach who has you playing for the national championship? No brainer for most people except koolaid drinkin sweaty pearl/vols fans.

+100
I don't know any Vol fans like Africavol, Maybe West Tenn Vol fans are the worst of the lot.
Are you Beavis or Butthead? Be honest; I've got real money riding on this.
This is actually why I can't stand Vol fans sometimes. They'll never hate us as much as we hate them. Oh well. Go Tigers.
How many of you really think Conner is 10 years old? I give him 8, at most.
TigerJohn--who would a recruit rather play for? Can't speak for the recruit but if I am a recruits parent I would feel much better having my child in Knoxville as opposed to Memphis. Allen, Dorsey, Dozier, etc.....yeah I don't know many parents who would want their kids on a team with those type of influences. Sorry, just the truth.
Tigerfan247--middle of the pack in the sec? That is possible. When you play in a competitive conference it is hard to stay on top year after year. But, you wouldn't know anything about a competitive conference would you? We actually have a chance to be pretty good next year. Scotty Hopson replaces Lofton and Cam Tatum replaces J Smith---everybody else remains---plus we add three more solid recruits. We should be able to push the streak over you guys to 3 in a row.
Best of luck tomorrow night--Memphis needs something it can be proud of!

2ND HALF ... Tigers come from down 7 to up 3. The next 47 seconds off the game clock result in 3 fouls issued.. 2 on Dorsey & 1 on Dosier. It was fun to watch ... but make no mistake VOLS didn't beat us ... SEC refs did.
.06 seconds in to the game and Dosier is hit with a phantom underneath. Told my wife after
.06, "We're done, they're not going to allow us to defend the basket. And the rest they say is ... History.
"Just keep playing football, Butch, That's what you're good at."

WOW! Then you wouldn't want your child to play football at UTK around all those thugs either! thanks it's nice to know people like you will stand up and be counted.
Please let us know what should be done to all the bad kids that get a chance in life to do something good and overcome adversity. How about taking them out back and beating the crap out of them or band them from all opertunities to rise above all the bigits like you.
Once again a UTK fan comes on board and reminds us why the world needs Memphis - Sorry MR. Potter the Building and loan is staying.
