The NCAA requires conferences to apply to the playoff committee for one of the 8 auto bids. PFL commissioner Patty Viverito will not apply for such a bid (probably wouldn't get one anyway).
This may sound strange until you realize that Viverito's primary football job is commissioner of the Gateway Football Conference. Holy Conflict of Interest, Batman!
Unlike basketball, the NCAA doesn't support auto bids for every conference in FCS/I-AA football. And personally, I don't care.

How is it that Patty Viverito is commissioner of two football conferences?

Evansville and Butler were original PFL members, and they were both were in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now known as the Horizon League). When Evansville joined Drake in the Missouri Valley Conference, the MCC wanted out of running the PFL. The Missouri Valley volunteered its Associate Commissioner, Viverito, who already had experience running the Gateway.
Perhaps it came down to no one else wanting the job.
