This article about Mercer's coach opening says that they have discussed the opening with Belmont's top assistant Casey Alexander. It also mentions that President Fisher and former President Troutt have called on his behalf.

I have been under the impression that Casey is the "coach in waiting" at Belmont. What's the word? How much longer is Coach Byrd going to coach? At his age he can definitely coach another 15 years easily, but will he? He's been at Belmont 22 or 23 years now.

Any word out there? I was slightly shocked to see Casey interview within the conference, and I would think that Mercer might be concerned if Byrd retired that Casey might come back to Nashville.

I would hate to brake up the staff. I thought it might come later than sooner. Maybe this will start the coaching tree that stems from Belmont.
