From the Birmingham Business Journal:

Quote:Amid a slowing economy in the U.S. homefront, the Birmingham-Hoover metro area continues to hold its own with the second lowest unemployment rate in the country.

The Birmingham-Hoover region - a total of 102 cites across seven counties - posted a 3.9 percent jobless rate in January, behind the Washington, D.C.-Arlington-Alexandria area, which reported 3.5 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Birmingham-Hoover tied with the Austin-Round Rock, Texas region, which also reported a 3.9 percent jobless rate, out of 49 metro areas with a census 2000 population of 1 million or more.

The Detroit-Warren-Livonia, Mich., area continues to record the highest unemployment rate of 8.2 percent.

Overall, unemployment rates were higher in January than a year earlier in 234 of the 369 metropolitan areas and lower in 111 areas.

Looks like Birmingham-Hoover MSA is doing great.

Remember that the unemployment rate only measures those who are actively looking for jobs. It drops those who for whatever reason give up on finding a job and drop out of the search. A generalization that they are "all lazy bums" may not be accurate. I hope every qualified person finds and is able to keep a "good" job. One with decent pay for an adult with a family and with benefits like medical insurance, pension etc. That way they can work and not risk being a burden on the taxpayers who are ALWAYS eventually stuck with the "tab" when they are lacking.
