Four of us are going DT on Thursday night to see Seinfeld (no not Dennis Miller). We want to hit Swigs and have dinner somewhere. Has anyone eaten at Swig's? What other restaurants are good in that area where we can walk?
majestic grille

blues city
Majestic Grill is great

If you like meat . . . you can't beat Texas de Brazil. All you can eat and it is good too.
I live downtown and could probably help. Is the show at the Orpheum? If so, Spindini would be good. Its about 4 blocks south of the Orpheum on Main. I also recommend McEwens on Monroe. Thats my favorite restaurant in Memphis. I wouldnt eat at Swig. In fact, I wouldnt even have drinks there but that's just me. I'm not really a martini kind of guy. If you want a really cool place to have drinks, try the bar Itta Bena. Its on the third floor above BB Kings. Just ask the doorman to point you in the right direction. Its a great atmosphere and location, really laid back and classy. My favorite bar downtown right now. Let me know if you have any more questions, have fun!!!

Just dont go to the black diamond after hours. Have heard numerous bad reports on that place.
don't go to the plush club 05-stirthepot

Or, if you do, just go before midnight.
yes, because we all know nothing good happens after midnight
I spend tons of time downtown.

Don't eat at Swigs. You can do so much better. Don't drink there unless you have to have a martini. Even then, the Corner Bar at the Peabody is better.

Itta Bena for sure. Great atmosphere and food. You can use the street entrance with the blue canopy. It's unmarked. This place is an experience.

Papa Pia, fantastic upscale Italian. A+ food, service and atmosphere.

Majestic Grille for steaks and all other food in an old theater.

Capriccio at the Peabody for the best steak in Memphis. Best service, some attitude.

Blue Fin on the mall, postmodern atmosphere and very good sushi and fusion.

Sawaddi, great Thai.

Circa on the mall. Upscale and interesting. Chef Bragg is an innovator. Good wine selection.

EP's for food. The chef is amazing. Delta fusion. Say hi to Trip.

Wangs on the mall for Chinese. Friendly folks. Giant chicken wings.

Automatic Slims on the mall. Southern with a twist.

The Westin Grille. Their chicken pot pies are enormous.

Lolo's Table. European, expensive.

Cayenne Moon for New Orleans. Fun atmosphere and fantastic food.

Pearl's on Main for oysters and seafood. Walk right on past Spindini. I think its food is overrated, its waiters are rude and the clientele are there to be seen, from East Memphis.

Cafe 61.

Sauces on the mall.

Grille 82 in the Madison Hotel, great steaks.

Westy's for food that is way too good to ever be found in a bar; even serving at 2:00 a.m. Way north on Main Street. Their chocolate pie!

The Big Foot for a fun experience. Their hamburgers and salads and steaks and bratwurst dogs ! are better than you think. They now have 32 ounce mammoth mixed drinks and those huge a-- beers. Say hi to Sam at the bar.

The Flying Saucer for short skirts and a great beer selection and poor service.

Harry's on Teur on G.E. Patterson.

Texas de Brazil for the meat and the atmosphere and service.

Rio Loco if you must have Mexican, and Huey's if you must have a hamburger, and the Rendezvous for ribs with an attitude.

If you must do Beale, you can't beat Blues City, the best, steaks and shrimp and tamales, the marinated salad; the Superior Bar, Miss Polly's, and Alfred's has amazingly good food, gumbo; and King's Palace, gumbo.

I could go on and on. There are 160 restaurants downtown.

People who come downtown and just go to Silky's or Beale Street are totally missing Downtown. It has changed SO MUCH.

AVOID Jillian's, the Happy Mexican, Denny's. Silky's will put a $50 hold on your credit card without your permission or consent for a couple days. Be forewarned.

For a bar that just opened, the Red Rooster next to the Westin at the Forum. Not sure if it's open on Thursdays.

Best Tiger bar downtown, Calhoun's on G.E. Patterson. They try to show all the Tiger games.

Best cult bars, Earnestine and Hazel's on South Main Street at G.E. Patterson, and Hollywood's on Saturday nights. Both worth a trip downtown late at night on the weekends. Impossible to describe them. You have to see them to believe them.

Just outside of downtown but well worth the trip are Molly Fontaine's Lounge (the old Cielo) across from the Fontaine House on Adams. The historic atmosphere is priceless, just be careful in the 'hood; and the Hunt-Phelan Home; the bar is a great experience in a historic setting and they have smaller, cheaper plates outside on the patio.

Way more than you wanted to know, right? Keep this list for the spring and summer. Many good times here! Don't feed the panhandlers. They are NOT homeless and make more than you do, no kidding. And don't pay them to park your car or give you a rose or a tour or anything.
The Black Diamond is fine, but don't go before 2:00 a.m. It will be full of service industry people. You never know what will be going on in there, but drinking heavily is the norm. The pizza is fantastic. A great place to watch the sun come up.

Seriously, stay away from the Plush Club end of Beale.

cp, I am way older than you. I would rather see the sunrises from my South Main condo, safely tucked away.

Nothing like hearing the City of New Orleans pulling out at around midnight down there and the trolley bell tinkling a block away.

Have to agree with you on several of your suggestions: Spindini's IS way overrated, Grill 83 has arguably the best steak in the city(Bone in Filet with onions) and good drinks too. Swig is not somewhere to eat. Slims(while not on the mall but right next to Cafe 61 across from Peabody on the west side) is good and always interesting. Cafe 61 is kinda of a cheaper version of Slims. Sawaddi is good too. Never been to Circa or Capriccio but based on your other recommendations I should probably try them. Sauces I'd pass on, Lolo's not so much, and McEwen's used to be one of my favorite places but they changed chefs so much it got to be dicey. Now that Mac has finally sold it maybe it'll settle down. Of all the places downtown you left off one of my favorites-Felicia Suzannes: great food and good service. If you can ever sit in the kitchen do it-she'll cook you whatever she feels like making and its all good. She'll even come have a few drinks with you. Try the BLFGT salad, "BBQ fried oysters", and the peppermint patty dessert. Also try the Cheesecake corner after the show if you have room for dessert. Huge portions of good cheesecake.
damn...I'm hungry ! love Majestic Grille (and it's only 1 block from the Orpheum)
clew901 Wrote:Sigh....I miss living in downtown Memphis. Had some great times there. Downtown Albuquerque sucks.

Yeah, it might but you can drive up to Taos and eat at Michael's Kitchen...that would be way cool.
Itta Benna is cool. The Westin is really good. McEwens is another good one. Papa Pia's is nice as well. I like Big Foot Lodge...they have this ham and cheese sandwich that is deep fried. Yowsa...that is a heart attack waiting to happen but so good.
Hooters. They give a different meaning to beer BUSTS.
Automatic Slim's is on Second St. isn't it? It's not on the Main St. Mall.

Do you ever eat IN 21-17??? LOL We need to make you the unofficial official DT Mempho Tour Guide! That's an impressive list. Are you sure you aren't a food critic?

Texas De Brazil gets my vote mainly because I love meat - here come the comments from georgiatiger - but they do have some other interesting side items the names of which I couldn't begin to remember and the service is great but it is a little pricey if you don't gorge yourself. If you pace yourself and eat for an hour or two it's well worth it though. Cappricio's has some of the best steaks I've ever eaten but the wait staff acts as if they are doing you a favor by being there even as they condescendingly give you some of the best service around.
Memphis needs a Sambucca's, ate there last Thursday night in Nashville, had a great 5 piece jazz band, GREAT service and reasonably priced and best of all the food was DELICIOUS!!
Man y'all have made me hungry, wonder what downtown Winchester, KY. has to offer.

My first suggestion was Automatic Slims, they want to go somewhere different. We discussed Majestic, but it didn't get met with the enthusiasm that I expected.

What a plethora of information. I think we'll try Ita Bena. We must go to Swigs, I promised. The ladies want chocolate martinis.

Rio Loco if you must have Mexican, and Huey's if you must have a hamburger.

Dayum! Can I hang out with you my next trip?

+1

i cannot believe i haven't met you yet, 21-17. sounds like we frequent a lot of the same places whenever we go downtown!

.....by the way, you missed one place....Flying Fish.
oldtiger Wrote:No, but they do have menus for me....you know, those kind with 48 font
I can relate to that.

I finally ordered a steak @ Blues City before a game recently. They brought it out and it looked like a roast! I couldn't believe that my son and I sat there and ate that whole thing.

Sawaddi, great Thai.

Circa on the mall. Upscale and interesting. Chef Bragg is an innovator. Good wine seletion.

EP's for food. The chef is amazing. Delta fusion. Say hi to Trip.

Wangs on the mall for Chinese.

Automatic Slims on the mall. Southern with a twist.

The Westin Grille. Their chicken pot pies are enormous.

Lolo's Table.

Cayenne Moon for New Orleans.

Sigh....... I miss living in Memphis when it comes to eating out.

If you're in Lexington, Sparky's or Grecian if you want to sit down to eat, otherwise mix it up with McDonald's, Burger King, Dairy Queen, Taco Bell, and Sonic. Los Portales if you have to have Mexican, Famous Chinese Restaurant if you have to have Chinese. If none of this turns you on, then it's only a 2 hour drive to downtown Memphis.
