oh, i didn't know it was just that easy...well, i'll call Pete Carroll at USC so he can sign that home-home deal...and you call Les Miles at LSU...i had no idea we could just schedule the best and they would just go along with it. 01-wingedeagle

why stop at 10 wins...i say we just go undefeated since according to you, it's just that easy. 01-wingedeagle

who knew?

Go Tigers!!!

Yeah, I am sure upgrading to LSU and USC will assure 10 win seasons.

AGAIN, WHERE ARE THE NUMBERS TO SUPPORT THIS FINANCIAL ARGUEMENT.
I have said it before and will say it again, I would much rather lose to LSU or Alabama than Arkansas State and Middle Tennessee. Playing ranked teams would give Memphis alot more credibility nationally. I would have rather lost to three SEC schools in 2007 than 3 sunbelt teams in 2007

Attendance records show that playing UT every odd year at home would be popular with Memphis Fans

At the end of the day, If Memphis football can produce a good show for the fans tickets sales won't be a problem.
I have said it before and I will say it again--we have been there and done that. WHere did it get us?

1) lets focus ALL OF OUR EFFORTS ON THE CONF FIRST. UT and Miss are one thing, because they came here. Playing USC would involve a 4 to 1 deal.
maybe we should have separate forums for basketball and football...it's over fellas.

Enjoy our #2 ranked team in the COUNTRY.

THANKYOU!!!!!
It's never over. Now-recruiting. Later-spring practice.
no attention to football except for in season is the problem.
What if our 2008 OOC schedule looked like this:
First game of the season, @ Ole Miss
Second game, Cincinnati
Third game, Arkansas St.
Start Conf. play on fourth game
Somewhere along the 6th or 7th game, Nichol St. just for a breather.
That's 2 BCS games, and 2 cream puffs.

Arkansas St. hasn't been a cream puff for two years now sadly. ALL BOW DOWN TO TOMMY WEST FOR SAVING OUR FOOTBALL PROGRAM!!!! 04-bow

You start with a false premise.

Where are the numbers to support that this unattractive schedule is working? Attendance numbers have dropped three consecutive years, so obviously it's not working.
the other Greg Childers Wrote:.... Attendance numbers have dropped three consecutive years, so obviously it's not working.
Since this thread is back up close to the top again........
You've made that statement a number of times in this thread and others and we "get it". Just curious, how many games have you attended in those three years?

Yeah, but what would playing USC do for recruiting and three trips to LA versus going to Jonesbur, Oxfart or Starkpatch?

Kids want to play against the best. Why not schedule that way?
we went to USC, and beat them. Its like this--if you beat USC but lose to UCF, UAB, and ECU, it was a "fluke"

If you win your conf and sneak a bloody nose every now and then to USC, you are "there".

Mississippi, by the way, is said to have more NFL players than any other state. There is talent in Miss, Bama, Ga., and La.

I know someone is screaming Florida too.
Oh yeah--we beat Bama here. FSU had to kick a FG to tie us, and Auburn has never beaten us. We also set NCAA records against Arkansas for blocked punts and beat them more than they beat us.
It is about conf titles folks. Ya'll act like we never played football before 5 years ago.

Amen Brotha!!! BTW, It's not ALL about conference titles. We need to concentrate on conference wins to be sure, but we have to balance that with getting some teams into the LB (or OCS 04-rock ) that will put some dollars into the football coffers (i.e. BCS conf. teams).
OK, if it's all about conference titles as you say, how many has Tommy won in seven years?

C-USA currently has its lowest ranking in its history, but UCF and ECU beat us like a red-headed stepchild. We didn't even play the top two teams in the West, Tulsa and Houston.

Quote:Sagarin College football conference rankings (includes both D1A and D1AA conferences):

2000 - 7
2001 - 8
2002 - 8
2003 - 9
2004 - 11
2005 - 9
2006 - 10
2007 - 14

If we can't compete for a division title, how exactly do you expect us to compete for a conference title?

Even with Heisman candidate DeAngelo Williams, record-setting QB Danny Wimprine, New England Patriot Stephen Gostkowski, and all-purpose Mo Avery we couldn't even sniff a conference title.

We are no close to competing for a conference championship than we were before Tommy got here.

As for attendance numbers:

Quote:Memphis Tigers home attendance (football):

2003 - 40,622
2004 - 41,175
2005 - 39,991
2006 - 32,440
2007 - 29,670

You can't blame that on me.

I'm not "blaming anything on you, bro.

The question wasn't asked from a good fan/fan/bad fan perspective, by the by. Sorry if it came across that way. However to be fair to our players, you've made some pretty pointed statements regarding one of our QBs, and our defense. It's entirely fair to ask how many games have you actually been attendance to make the evaluations of our players.

I'll also say that there are a lot of legitimate reasons to miss a game a year or so....family, work committments, etc. Heck, I've got a lot of things going on in my life and I've probably missed a game a year for a those reasons. But I'm not overly critical of specific players. It's a fair question. How many games have you actually attended the last 2-3 years to make those evaluations?

I saw your pic of the Cincy game. You and all those folks deserve mega kudos for drivint to Cincy and supporting the BB team....especially from those seats. lol

Can those evaluations be made from watching games on TV? We've had quite a bit of exposure the last few years.
You'd be crazy to not realize interest has severely dwindled since Deangelo graduated. We made a bowl this year but interest could be down to Rip levels next year with the awful schedule we have set up. We'll be back to diehards in the stands. That is what I call not taking advantage of a gift when you receive it. Deangelo coming here should have been the start to bigger things. It looks now like Deangelo was just a moment of excitement that passed by entirely too quickly.
BrianJ Wrote:Can those evaluations be made from watching games on TV? We've had quite a bit of exposure the last few years.
Sure, of course some evaluations could be made sitting in front of a TV. But this isn't a "when did you stop beating your wife question." It's a straight forward question.

I have no problem saying that life and family responsiblities have kept me from attending EVERY game.

Tommy, not sure if your comment was aimed at me, but I agree that anyone can see that attendance has declined. I think that we all agree on that.

Oh come on, blame it on him, he blames it on coach West and everyone else, let's just have some fun and blame him for once.
Make all the jokes you want, but ignoring the REAL problem will not make it go away. The attendance this year (a bowl year as so many of you like to point out) is already "down to Rip levels."

The travel schedule for my job prevents me from attending games.

How do you explain the three year drop in attendance? What can be done to reverse the trend?

tigerbham Wrote:Why is there a football thread in the middle of the basketball forum? 05-stirthepot

We have a basketball forum?
oldtiger Wrote:I saw your pic of the Cincy game. You and all those folks deserve mega kudos for drivint to Cincy and supporting the BB team....especially from those seats. lol

The only reason I was able to attend that game is because I was in Columbus on a business trip, and I drove down to Cincinnati on my way home. I have to check the remainder of the schedule to see if I'm in an area where the Tigers are playing on the road.

My job keeps me out of town three-quarters of the month. I don't have the luxury of being in Memphis every day so that I can see games whenever I want. Almost every single Saturday this fall, I was in transit from somewhere else to get back home. I did see the Marshall game on ESPN, as well as the New Orleans Bowl.

The few days I am in town, my number one priority is my family. My wife and I just celebrated out 13th anniversary, and I have a ten year old son whom I don't get to see as much as I'd like.

Thank you. I admire your devotion to your wife and 10 year old son. I too traveled when we were first married and it can be a very difficult challange managing your family VS a job that keeps you in the air/on the road.

I'm not going to give you a hard time about not attending games because your family should indeed come first. No one should argue that with you.

I do however respectfully believe that it's fair that you not give our players and coaches a hard time regarding their performance if your best vantage point is a box score or coaches show.
Lighten Up toGC. It's a new year with new attitudes and outlooks.

Happy New Year.
Every school has to schedule a decent home schedule to sell tickets- why do memphis fans think differently?
Memphis17 Wrote:Every school has to schedule a decent home schedule to sell tickets- why do memphis fans think differently?
It's the AD and the head coach that think differently, not the fans.
Tommy has fired DC Rick Kravitz after one year and lost Derek Jones to Duke after one year. Considering the pathetic showing by the defense this year, it's not entirely unexpected.

Tommy will be starting his eighth year with his fourth DC.

At some point, you have to quit blaming it on someone else TW.

Furthermore, SMU is going after Hawaii coach June Jones. We may be slipping further behind in the conference.
And now that the thread has finally been moved to the miserables forum, the happy clappers have indeed won.

If you want to know why we have not moved forward in football, I think you have to look no farther than this thread.
The fact this is considered SMACk is --well, whatever.
It's pretty obvious the happy clappers want to maintain the status quo.

Heaven forbid we ever try to IMPROVE.
Someone mentioned creampuffs earlier in this thread. In case nobody has noticed, WE have been creampuffs for the past 2 years. Just an observation.

This thread is almost two years old, but still relevant today.
....and will probably be relevant next year.
We'll have this same discussion every season until Tommy West is gone.

Of course, we'll have it about a new coach as well.
Tommy may be in trouble this time. He dont have Tulane and SMU to kick around this year
Tommy West sucks: evidence to lend creditbility to this theory would be his coaching record: 82-88. Record @ Memphis: 47-53. Tommy is GARBAGE. Can we please, please, please get a new coach?
We should've fired him back then.
That BuffaloT thread from three years ago solved a ton of problems, as did this one and a thousand others over the years.
