Word is two players were arrested last night outside club red... anyone else heard this?
Oh hell, Which ones?? Please dont say Walter Sharpe
i heard it...i think i heard it was ellis and vaden, although im not certain
Just what we need. Thank the Lord is wasn't Sharpe. He doesn't have much wiggle room for trouble. I hate to hear Vaden was involved. He is the leader of this team with Delaney.
Apparently Davis isn't saying much about it... I'm curious to see how he handles it if it is Vaden.
Birmingham's South Precinct confirmsthat 2 UAB basketball players were arrestedat 1:30am. outside club red. They were arrested for disorderly conduct. The two basketball players were Freshman Keenan Ellis and Junior Robert Vaden.
Was this a disorderly conduct thing? Maybe fighting with a patron or refusing to leave? Hopefully not much more than that. There will still be suspensions for this. Ellis we can handle for this year, but I'd hate to lose Vaden for some of it. they need to be punished though and the team will adjust and move on till they return.
Vaden would shock me. Ellis would not. He's been having some attitude issues on and off the court I believe.
I expect Mike Davis to act swiftly and sternly. These seem to be good kids, and hopefully Mike will show CUSA that we aren't Memphis and don't allow this kind of behavior. I am not suggesting kicking them off the team of sitting them for the season, but there will need to be some punishment. We aren't UA, lol.
Maybe he'll handle it like Saban... "internally"
We need to pull a Calipari and suspend them both for the West Alabama game. 03-lmfao

After all, we don't want to punish all the rest of the team and the fans for their bad behavior. That will be a good life lesson for them.

Now we can tell our recruits are getting better. They are showing up on the police blotter!
As long as "internally" doesn't become "consistently"

The man's got a point.

Vaden should know better. But of course, we don't know the details. What is possible in my mind is that Ellis had another one of his attitude problems with someone and that Vaden probably tried to calm him down (as Vaden has done many times), but this time it may have gotten out of hand. Just speculation, but I would be surprised if Vaden was really involved in much of this... he may have just been in the middle of some altercation between Ellis and someone else.
Got in trouble standing up for his teammate. I am just relieved it wasn't Walter Sharpe. I keep waiting for the hammer to fall with him. He has done a very good job keepinghis nose clean, but I am still a little scared.
From another board...

Sounds almost like what I was talking about. I bet it was Ellis that initiated something, and Vaden just got caught up in it. Both may deserve to be punished, but if Vaden was just kind of in the middle of it, I think his punishment should be less.

As long as we are speculating, I am guessing that they were trying to save puppies from evil corrupt police officers wanting to sell the puppies for experimentation. The evil corrupt police officers arrested Ellis and Vaden when they tried to intervene.

Point is: Stop with the speculating as to what happen until we hear more.

And you know the problem I'll have with this... is that 90% of the days, the local media will say nothing about UAB. Something like this happens, and they'll have a field day with it. At least with Alabama, they consistently cover them whether it's problems or just providing information about Saban's latest haircut.
I also think we need to hear something official before getting worked up about it. Honestly, this is probably the best time for something like this, regrettable as it is, to happen. We're still a few months out from the start of the basketball season, not to mention that football season just started. Our relative lack of media coverage should be a boon here, and any stories the B-ball team will probably cycle out of the news pretty quickly with so much football to report on.

Then, as PETA activists they should substituted for the puppies in the experiments.

We could just throw them off the team forever (for a couple of weeks).05-stirthepot

That'd be the Calipari rule.

Didn't the Memphis players pull a woman's hair and then run her over with their car. I think their punishment was extra running after practice.

I heard on the radio that Davis will handle it internally. Which I will admit is the proper way to handle some things.

So our play by play guy is also handling team discipline? Wow we are low budget

I hate to say it but I know for a fact that at least five players were arrested. They acted like a bunch of thugs.
I think they were all arrested for disorderly conduct and believe me the police tried there best not to arrest anyone but they would not leave calmly and continually cursed the police, at least one from another parking lot where all he had to do was walk off. From what I've heard Vaden was the worst one and the rest of the team was trying to calm him down. At least one ran from the police and is lucky he wasn't hurt. The quote I hated the most from someone there "they acted like a bunch of thugs, even worse than Joel Montgomery(councilman)" and trust me that is bad.
Walter Sharpe should be kicked off the team since he was already on a short leash. I would lose a lot of respect for Mike Davis if he does not kick him off the team or at least make him sit out for a long time. The only reason I say that is because I think it was agreed upon when UAB signed him that he had to stay out of trouble.
Not to question the credibility of your information or anything, but we should maybe wait until we hear for a fact what happened before we go saying what should and should not be done. All your doing by posting these things is giving visitors here the freedom to take this to another board somewhere and get a bunch of rumors started. I think the best thing for us to do would be to leave this thread alone unless you have rock solid information, and maybe even then we should keep a lid on it to save face.
I haven't seen anything in the media yet
That article itself proves that ofcchad has no idea what he is talking about and is just spreading rumors. It clearly says 2 arrested, not 5! Ignore all of his comments on this subject.

I fixed my bad typing...

I wouldnt be so quick to dismiss things that we dont like to hear...

I have heard many things similar (no arrests) as far as the conduct of this team away from the court, will be interesting to see how this all shakes out...
If it is true, I won't dismiss it. But it isn't true. The media and police department clearly say 2 UAB players, not 5.
The media is only reporting a small blurb that the received from UAB. Obviously UAB is not going to be forthcoming with details, so I would not take the NBC13 blurb as the final word.

The ofc in ofcchad I believe means officer, as in police officer. I believe he might have solid information.

That said, the number of players "involved" in the incident and the number of players "arrested" may be different. Some may have been involved, but backed down before the arrests started.

This may be a good wake up call for the team. You can't act like prima donnas. This isn't the SEC or Indiana where athletes are treated like royalty. This is UAB and they are in Birmingham. That does not necessarily mean everyone wants them to succeed. They need to realize that there are those in Birmingham who want to see UAB embarrassed.

Finally, Doesn't Davis have a curfew. It was 1:30am and a school night. They should have been in their beds.

I would be careful automatically trusting incomplete news information, and calling out someone who "has no idea what he is talking about"--especially when he is right.

Kinda makes a person look a little foolish.

Five UAB basketball players arrested

I stand corrected. Sorry ofcchad. I was going by what was actually out there at the time to everyone in the media. I am just very wary of info on this board until I can see it from another source.
That is 3 of our projected starters and a top PG.

Five UAB basketball players arrested
Posted by Birmingham News Sports Staff August 31, 2007 6:42 PM
Five UAB Blazer basketball players were arrested and jailed early Friday morning by Birmingham police.

Edward Berrios, 23; Keenan Ellis, 18; Walter Sharpe, 21; Channing Toney, 21; and Robert Vaden, 22; were all booked into the Birmingham City Jail between 2:45 and 3:30 this morning.

Details surrounding their arrest were not immediately available this evening, but a city jail log shows Toney facing the most serious of charge of physically harrassing a police officer.

Authorities charged Berrios with physical harrassment and disorderly conduct. Ellis, Sharpe and Vaden were all charged with disorderly conduct.

All posted bond and were released between 7 a.m. and 8:55 a.m., said a jail spokeswoman. Berrios posted $1,000 bond on his two charges.

UAB men's basketball coach Mike Davis said he knew of the arrest but declined to comment on any actions he might take.

"We are aware of the situation and will handle the matter internally andappropriately," Davis said in a statement released Friday afternoon.

Wait a minute. This article was written by Toraine Norris also. Therefore the numbers may be way off. Maybe it was just two instead of five. He always had problems with numbers. 03-lmfao

And who would have thought that Toraine would still be covering the basketball team after he moved to the City Desk at the News.

So, basically, CHAD was just HANGING it out there?03-banghead

Nice CHAD reference! Gore would be happy
Hopefully by Monday we'll have something concrete and official about what happened. Thank God this happened now and not in February...
im not going to get too worked up over DC. if a player touched a cop then he should be suspended.

I dont know that I would thank god that this happened period...August or November or Februrary... it still makes a statement to the character of our basketball team and it is a poor reflection on our athletic department and our university.

I am telling, this type of behavior is not out of character for what has been going on for some time...its just the first to hit the blotter...

I must have wandered over to the Memphis board, because that sure sounds like what a Memphis fan would say.

Yes, DC isn't a felony, but the number of players arrested, the confrontational attitude with the cops, the time of night they were out once school has started...that all says a lot about this team.

I hope Davis sets them straight, because I don't want suspensions, dropouts and dismissals to ruin what could be a great year.

Here's my take on this:
If you are a single young man in college and go to clubs you might as well book it --you are going to get in some trouble. Chasing women is the quickest way to get in trouble too. Here is the formula.....[((Alcohol x testosterone) + chasing women)/smart azz mouthing a cop = Your busted].
Thursday night isn't a school night for a lot of people (it wasn't for me, and I wasn't in locked up in my room studying). I am very disappointed and embarrassed for my university, and I'm afraid these guys are gonna pay a price for it more than the justice system will dole out.
This, to me, is a bad omen of things to come. This could be a long, long season if these five wind up suspended for the season over this. Or kicked out of school. We have no idea what happened yet. Ever the pessimist, I'm expecting the worst (years of Zero in charge do that to a man).

I don't ever recall officer chad being incorrect in the past. Therefore, we should all wait and see.
