I thought it would be interesting to list music, songs heard in commercials, especially by artists you would not guess would be used....

I'll Start...

Ambulance LTD - Anecdote - Sprint

Cat Power - How Can I Tell You (Cat Stevens) - Diamonds are Forever

Wilco - Entire SKy Blue Sky Album - Volkswagen
I don't own one, but I heard Feist is in a cell phone commercial.
New Pornographers are in a Phoenix University commercial. Pheonix U is an online University.

Here's a Pitchfork interview with AC Newman about the commercial

Quote:
Pitchfork: I saw an ad for one of those quasi-legit universities, the University of Phoenix, and it happened to have a song of yours in the background.

Carl Newman: Yeah, I know. It's weird, isn't it?

Pitchfork: What's the deal with that?

Carl Newman: It's one of those things that just, you get a call, and somebody said "hey, the University of Phoenix wants to use the end of "Bleeding Heart Show" in a commercial." And I thought, "eh, fair enough." And I really honestly didn't know that University of Phoenix was a huge online university. I actually thought it was, like, the University of Phoenix; like, every city has its big university, you know? And I thought, "oh, it'll show in the Southwest." It seemed kind of odd to me, like, I've never heard of a university having a TV commercial, but I thought, oh well. All of a sudden, people started saying "I saw your commercial during 'Saturday Night Live'" or "I saw your commercial during 'American Idol'," and I thought, "what the hell is up with that?" Then I began to realize that, well, I guess we inadvertently signed up to be in a big commercial. How about that?

Pitchfork: Does it seem odd to be connected with a sketchy university?

Carl Newman: You know, if University of Phoenix is some kind of scam, then I suppose I'd feel kind of stupid for being a part of it, but you know, I can't really say that I have much of an opinion, you know? It's a university, or a school, and it might be a crappy school, but it seems like letting a crappy school use your song is probably better than letting the best business use your song. I'm not overly political, but if Wal-Mart wanted to use the song, I would just go, "**** off, no chance in hell." But for a lot of other things, I'm not so precious about our music. A lot of work went into it-- you record your song and you mix it and you put it out and it's there in the world, and as for the rest of it, I can't really stop people from doing with it what they want. Songs always mean the same thing to me regardless of whether they're in a commercial or playing in the background on "The Office" or whatever. I don't really have any... I'm kind of shocked that I have to talk about it.

One thing that made me feel better was, right around the time that commercial started showing up, there was also the Outback Steakhouse commercial with Of Montreal in it. And I thought, "thank God, that's really going to deflect some attention away from us." At least we didn't give our song to Outback. Now I'm afraid if I accidentally say something about the University of Phoenix that a hammer is going to come down on my head, or I'll find myself in a lawsuit. My official stance is, "I fully support the University of Phoenix," but to back that, I honestly didn't know what it was. But then again, if I did know what it was, I'm not sure that I would have said no. We're just trying to get by in this world. When you play music for so long and don't make any money, and people start offering you money for things that involve no effort on your part, you start going, "I'll do that."

And since the interview brought it up: of Montreal for Outback Steak House...although, I haven't heard that one myself, but there is a youtube link

I have seen that one a couple times....I didn't realize it was Of Montreal.

Here is the Cat Power commercial....

Cat Power - DeBeers

funny you post this today, I was just browsing another site and some one posted this link to a Bob Mould song in a series of PowerOf.org. I've seen the commercial, but didn't know the song.

The Black Keys - "Have Love Will Travel" - Some car comercial

AC/DC - Verizon V Cast (been on a lot lately)

I always liked this one too: Rolling Stones "She's a Rainbow" for Mac's G3 iMac
The V Cast commercial cracks me up....

I've heard that that isn't Of Montreal. Of Montreal just gave Outback permission to rewrite the words and have somebody else sing them. I've also heard the same deal with some M. Ward song for some commercial. Also, apparentley PB & J are in a Levi commericial.

Feist - Preview for "State of Mind" on Lifetime

Collective Soul - A recent Special K commercial

The actual YouTube link says "Outback Steakhouse Commercial with a re-make of an Of Montreal song"

I'd watch it, but my external hard drive containing this Beirut I'm listening to doesn't cooperate with YouTube or any other listening dealy.

It sounds like the normal outback singers you hear on every outback commercial.
I heard two more recently.

Flaming Lips - "The W.A.N.D." is in a Dell Comercial.
I'm sure you've seen it by now

The other is some comercial that uses a Smashing Pumpkins tune in the background. It's very prominant at the end. I can't remember what it's for (maybe a car) and I can't find it on YouTube.

Although, while looking for it, I found this promo for Transformers that uses the Smashing Pumkins song "Doomsday Clock."
Just so happens iTunes has a segment called "Commercial Success" running right now. My wife pointed it out to me. It's loaded with songs running in current commercials. Open iTunes and it's a box on the front page.

Some of the highlights, a few I had forgotten and few that slipped by:
Regina Spector - Music Box [JC Penny]
Jonathan Edwards - Sunshine (go away today) [Jeep] Love this song
Sam Cooke - (I Love You) for Sentimental Reasons [Mercedes]
Peter Bjorn & John - Up Against the Wall [Levis]
Squeeze - Tempted [Heineken] Not sure how I forgot about this one. It's on all the time.
Parliment - Give up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker) [Master Card]
Hem - The Part Where You Let Go [Liberty Mutual]
The Thrills - One Horse Town [Volvo] Not sure how I missed this one either. It's been on for a while now and the radio version is always on.

Check iTunes for the complete list.
My buddy was watching some football game and I sat down, during a commercial I heard

Mates of State- For the Actor. Not sure what the commercial was.

My coworker/buddy also told me a Feist song is in an ipod commerical.

I used to cringe at this, but since I don't watch tv anymore occasions like this are the only times I find out about it. I used to think of it as selling out, but then I think of the fact that these artists have to make a living and people sure as hell aren't buying their albums. So if I want them to continue making music I have to accept this and I think that I'm getting better. I can't stop liking Feist.
I heard Refused's "New Noise" used on the NFL Network one time, which was slightly weird.

They only play that commercial like 1,000 time per day. I almost hate that song now. That video is very lame....

Feist should stick to singing and leave the dancing to Justin Timberlake...

I have no problem with it. For the indie bands, it's great marketing. For me, I'd rather hear The Shins in a comercial than some crappy background production music. It's win/win.
I think I just heard Band of Horses in a new Ford Edge commercial.
My wife was trying to figure out some song from a comercial and stumbled across this:

http://www.whatsthatcalled.com/forum/ind...&blogid=1&
Hank Williams "Your Cheating Heart" in a Pepsi commercial, a Coke delivery man is grabbing a Pepsi
Is there a Band of Horses song in a Wal-Mart commercial? At the show the other night, Ben says something like, to some show goer, "why don't you take your camera to Wal-Mart and we can suck each other off." Not sure what sparked it, besides their hatred of flash photography. My sister said she thinks it's a Wal-Mart commercial they're in.
