When broke, I would eat there. Then, I would take trash bag of pizza home with me. I could have part of the reason they had to close........

Anyone remember the 'frozen' drink place on the southside? In 1990, I had to take a cab to the hospital, on New Years eve. While drinking probably my 5th frozen drink, I decided to put a straw thru my cornea.

Frostbites. Home of the 190-proof jello shooter for a buck each, too!

My parents really liked Manchas. Mom 'knew' when I was probably broke, so she would call and invite me to dinner there every couple of weeks...

Yep, you're right. There was a bar/restaurant on Cobb Lane that also had great jello shooters.

Club O2 in the warehouse.
What was the name of the dance club on Valley Avenue down from Sammy's?

Cafe DeVille (Cafe I will) and Sonuva Beach (Son of a Bitch) was the name for a while and it changed back and forth a few times to my recollection.

Club O2 was the name I couldn't remember but described in a post above.

Hey RBB what was the place we used to go that is in the same location as the 22nd St Jazz cafe. Remember the girl at the table sitting next to us who said she was celebrating her 15th birthday. She was wasted.

Frostbites on Thursdays way way back. There was a cover and then .25 draft and .50 jello shots from 7-9. At 8:45 we would fill a table with full cups. We had a regular group of about 20 each week. That is where we first met Dean.

RBB I know you remember Norms. We made a few trips there. And it always reminded me why I didn't go there, except when you could talk me into it.
Wow, lots of good memories here. A few points:

Like someone said, Al's was opened probably in 1999. It wasn't there when I started in 1996, but had been around a while by the time I left Birmingham in 2001.

One summer, our alcoholism went like this:
Monday - not sure
Tuesday - Penny Beer at TC's (was actually $5 cover, drink until the kegs ran out)
Wednesday - $1 Margaritas at Sabor Latinos
Thursday - Music Hall - $.75 long necks and "disco night"
Friday - usually a party at our house
Saturday - Music Hall - On one Saturday at about 2:00 a.m. I witnessed Prince do about 6-7 songs for a couple hundred people at Music Hall after his concert at the BJCC. One of the craziest things I've ever been a part of.
Sunday - Finish off any leftover beer, and usually end up going out for more

As for food, I have been away since 2001 and I still crave Ranelli's (on 20th Street between 5 Points and Louie's, Bell Bottoms, or whatever) chicken parmesan sandwiches and Jim n Nicks pig in the potato patch.
[Saturday - Music Hall - On one Saturday at about 2:00 a.m. I witnessed Prince do about 6-7 songs for a couple hundred people at Music Hall after his concert at the BJCC. One of the craziest things I've ever been a part of.]

This happened at a Cheese Brokers show. I was there also.
Noone has listed the Hippodrum. I see that many of you are from the same generation of UAB students as I, so I know many of you were there.

Anyone remember U2 playing at Louise's? I was out drinking one night and our server told us that U2 was there. The story goes that U2 flew into New Orleans and rented cars to drive to southern cities, to see where they wanted to play. I didn't see them that night, but I bet it was cool. Similiar to Prince.

A friend of mine played in a band in high school and they played there a few times. I got to hang out there before I should have been :)
Austin's was a happening place for a while, too.

Me, I mostly hung at TCs.

I received most of my college education in that bar.
Anyone ever venture to T.P. Crockmiers at Eastwood Mall? I only went there because they took my fake I.D.

No but I remember seeing Dave Matthews at Louie's. It was July before they released their Under the Table and Dreaming album.

Velcro Pygmies, Mel and the Party Hats and the Cheesebrookers were the best band nights at Louie's that I recall besides the Thursdays. I actually like the thursday nights at Louie's in the summer when you had enough room to actually dance.

I saw 311 a couple times at 5pts.

Some of the guys are in another band now according to myspace.com. I would pay some $$$ to get some of their music on recordings.

Lived in Denman Hall 75-80. Watched 4th of July fireworks on roof.

It was Sub Station in the 70s early 80s. Kitchen Sink and Italian are carry overs.
What about the 21st Street Brewery. I will never forget going there after a basketball game. The service we got was absolutely horrific and we didn't leave a tip. Our server came out cussing us as we were leaving. I was never that crazy about anything they served, we just hung out there a good bit because it would be one of the only places open after basketball games that served food (other than McDonalds and Arbys).
Hey MB,

I was at the PKA house from around 78-82, I was a freshman in the fall of 1976.

I attended UAB's first Basketball game, First home football game ,
I've been to a Football game we played @ Lawson Field--Yeah Right--Lawson Field not Legion Field, Calumet (deaf team), the used a bass drum for percussion to know when to fire off the ball!!!!

There have been a lot of changes since then!!!!
My roommate and our neighbors from upstairs laid out 3 frisbee golf courses on campus. To this day we still refer to a few landmarks around campus by their hole designation. 04-rock

This is going to expose my age - but before Louie Louie's it was the Cadillac Cafe.

Great spot - eclectic group. Got into an ugly fight with a big guy who thought I was hogging the "Eight Ball" pinball machine. He took a cheap shot while I was playing but I recovered OK. I'd like to think he looked worse than me the next day - but I've still got scars.

Baby Doe's became a rapist's playground - drunk women - leaving alone - unmonitored isolated and dark parking lot - easy pickin's. Some of these women were very, very close to me. I helped put 2 of these jerk's in jail.

That's a major reason the place didn't make it.

On the upside - Burly's Earl, Andrew's, Sneaky Pete's, Waite's for b'fast, Ollie's - some really good memories.

Komodo

I forgot about the tennis courts on eigth under the nurses dorm - no longer there - those nurses were loud and nasty.
