This is really scary. The current administration, and mainly Dick Cheney, think they can do *whatever* they want, just because it's wartime. And he's got the president thinking he knows exactly what has to be done, and he's walking all over us while he does it. Just like Cheney saying he's "not part of the executive branch".

Conservatives need to be just as afraid of these guys as liberals and need to stop giving them free reign. Sure, it's fine when your guys are in office, but wait till some lefty nutjob gets in there and takes this administration up as precedent for doing whatever they want, in "wartime".
I hardly consider Bush and Cheney conservatives.
They are Neo-conservatives, not real or paleo-conservatives. The two are completely different.
The fact that this abuse of power continues to go unchecked just shows me that this country has lost its way. Our constitution is no longer worth the paper it is written on.
Constitution? We have one of those? Please explain...
If you want to preserver the Constitution check out Ron Paul. He is a radical, but even if you disagree with on him some issues he has a very respectable voting record. In fact I would say he is the only Congressman that doesn't flip flop. Granted he votes NO 99% of the time.

I would also check out:

The ACLU: http://www.aclu.org
Foundation for Economic Education: http://www.fee.org
Institute for Justice: http://www.ij.org
Cato Institute: http://www.cato.org

I'm sure there are many more groups working to preserve the Constitution. Regardless of whether you consider yourself a moderate, liberal, or conservative there are groups trying to defend the Constitution. I recommend finding some you like and supporting them in anyway you can.
I am a card carrying member of both the ACLU and the NRA, and I'm damned proud of it. (still a flaming lefty)

And here I was, about to note jxgx78's posted links to both the ACLU and Cato Institute websites!
This is the same Constitution that we had when:
A-We sent the Cherokee packing west on the "Trail of Tears" after the US Supreme Court stated they were entitled to stay in GA and NC.
B-We maintained slavery in a nation where we said "All men are created equal".
C-We tolerated terrorism against Jews, Irish, Chinese, Blacks and other "undesirable" minorities including lynching and less violent forms of discrimination.
D-We established the Bureau of Immigration in 1880 and began limiting the influx of non-white, nonprotestant, non-northern european peoples.
E-In the 1930s,the USA had the largest Nazi Bund meetings outside Germany itself with standing room only meetings in the Boston Garden and New Yorks Madison Square Garden. We also refused entry to a shipload of German Jews escaping Hitler, sending them back to death there at the hands of the Nazis.
F-We rounded up American citizens of Japanese descent and placed them (with their limit of one suitcase of belongings) in concentration camps. When a Japanese-American won the Medal of Honor in Europe, it was mailed to his family in camp.
G-For almost one century, we tolerated the KKK terrorizing Blacks even to the extent of murdering a decorated African-American soldier and hanging his body, still in the uniform of his country, so that it could be photographed.
The Army allowed German POWs to go to base officer clubs while excluding Negro officers.
H-We agreed in Geneva in 1954 to a free election in all of Viet Nam for 1956, and then blocked its being done because we feared the Ho Chi Minh faction would win. This led to our steadily increased support for the South VN gov't so that we wound up losing over 50,000 American lives and still came out losing.
I-We (through the CIA) overthrew the ELECTED gov'ts in Iran and Chile because we couldn't tolerate the free elections that didn't go the way we desired. We set up the Shah in Iran and Pinochet in Chile. We have seen how well those turned out for us.
J-We allowed Reagan to sell TOW missiles to Iran for $42 million (not a bad deal for $18million of obsolete missiles), but then hide the money in a "black gov't" (headed by Oliver North) illegal backdoor support for Contra rebels in DIRECT opposition to Congress (who had bought the missiles). $26 million is still not accounted for.
K- Now we have the fruits of the "Cheney Presidency" when we see that his Chief of Staff gets clemency for exposing a covert CIA agent just to get even for his telling the truth-that Iraq was NOT trying to buy Uranium from Africa while Cheney was claiming they were.
The mistreatment of the Constitution and its provisions is nothing new. We just have generally not included these discomforting facts in our texts since the publishers know that the truth hurts and results in nobody buying the book for schools. Do you suppose a "gloves-off" text on Alabama history would be accepted by the state Textbook Commission for school districts to purchase?
