Just in case you thought I knew what I was doing these days.

My computer has a 40G hard drive. Being from the old school of 256M drives I thought "There is no way in the fudge I'm ever going to fill this thing up." and went on my merry way, never keeping up with drive space used.

Yesterday, after doing a -uNDv to get things nice and fresh, I had to do some things to get GnuCash working (because the ebuild is for shyte) which involved emerging some libraries and whatnot. During the second emerge, Portage started screaming that there wasn't enough space on the device. I called BS, but everything reported that the drive was full.

I was sure that I'd melted the drive. The whole computer was $300, so I expected it to go down violently one day. Again, I'm from the old school of tiny drives and couldn't comprehend that the little bit of stuff I have on this box had filled up a 40G drive.

During the day, I did some looking around and started to think that maybe, hopefully, the damn thing really was full. Took some notes and set off to seeing if things got better.

Here's a synopsis of what I did and the space freed:

Code:
rm -r /var/tmp/portage/*

Space freed - 1.74G

Code:
eclean-dist

*eclean-dist is part of gentoolkit. It removes outdated packages from the portage tree.

Space freed - 2.6G

Code:
cleaned /usr/src of all the kernels not currently in use, save the newest 2.6.20 just in case

Space freed - you ready for this 4.26G.

Code:
cleaned /var/log of old messages

Space freed - 200MB

Code:
cleaned /lib/modules of modules used 3 kernels ago

Space freed - 100MB

Those simple things freed up 9 stinking gigs. 9. Stinking. Gigs. I have 17 free now after clearing out some other crap I don't use.

Damn you Gentoo, you work too well. You awesomeness causes me complacency, you cute cuddly bastage you.

Let this be a lesson to all who aren't GTS - clean out the old crap.

That is all.
