i was thinking we could use this to post the pages of bands currently flying under the radar that you enjoy. i mean, no need to post U2's myspace. to start it off:
Ike Reilly: http://www.myspace.com/ikereilly
One of my favorite bands. See them live if you get the chance. Clever song writer. Intersting voice. I love the first two records.
Dfactor: http://www.myspace.com/dfactor
Interesting song writer from New York. His former band was Anthemic Pop Wonder. He's also the guy that did 12 covers in 12 months project last year. You can find that link in his "about me" section.
Mary Epworth: http://www.myspace.com/maryepworth
Fabulous singer from the UK. Some of her stuff is a little glossy, but her voice rings through.
Sumahama: http://www.myspace.com/ilovesumahama
This is Mary Epworth's side project. This link has only one song, which may be the greatest cover song ever....and not just because it happens to be an Urge Overkill song. That's just an added bonus. Seriously, check this song out. It's absolutally beautiful. 84, it'll fit your shoegazer mood.
Alright, this was a great idea for a thread. I've enjoyed sampling a few bands I wasn't aware of yet. Please, let's hear some contributions from others.
My recomendations of the day, two from Bloodshot Records:
Let me start this post by saying I am not a big fan of MySpace. With that being said, here are a few bands that I like that I haven't heard anyone here talk about from least to most well-known.....
The Daylights - Another unsigned band that I dig. Oops, I guess they got signed to Epic Records and they sound very, very different. I guess a lot changes in a year or so.
Blue Merle - Mandolin, Fiddle, Upright Bass, Keyboards....What's not to like?
They've been mentioned on this site before, but I thought I'd throw their myspace up for anyone who hasn't heard them yet....or anyone who has heard them and know they rock.
A bunch of Arts and Crafts labelmates are going to redo the Stars "Set Yourself on Fire" The song "Sleep Tonight" is remixed by the Junior Boys. I can't wait to see who does "Your Ex-Lover is Dead," and "Celebration Guns."
This is a local band, who've stumbled upon some success. I've become quite a groupie, have seen them play 4 times in the past 2 years. Their new ablum "All this Time" is an outstanding album, while their first "Stairs and Elevators" is also quite excellent.
I'll add a couple more. These were the two bands that opened up for Margot & the Nuclear So & So's tonight. They were both pretty good and in the same vein as Margot. The smallest of the bands was Page France. They only had 6 members while Canada had 7 and Margot, 8. There was a lot of stuff going on.
These guys are easier to label and I would call them a mixture of The Jayhawks (with less whine), David Gray (without the drum machines) and Willie Nelson.
Alright, I've seen this guys name around here and there, but never heard any of his music. I accidentally stumbled upon a track this afternoon and it turns out this guys stuff is pretty fantastic.

Someone please recommend some good guitar driven music. However, stay away from metal. Thanks.
In return I offer a couple options--
On the recommendation of a friend, Midlake- http://myspace.com/midlake
I like the song Roscoe
On the recommendation of another friend and the guys at Sound Oppinions during their review of SXSW, The Pipettes: http://www.myspace.com/thepipettes
Good stuff.
They have their new album streaming in its entirety. Heres the AMG review:
Quote:
The five members of the British band Fields couldn't have planned it this way, but in a single ten-track album, they manage to evoke all of the following bands/artists (and in no particular order): My Bloody Valentine, Fleetwood Mac, Genesis, Radiohead, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Nick Drake, and Cocteau Twins. That may be a potent cocktail of influences, but it's all in balance throughout the eye-opening brew of lush, heavily textured music that spills from Everything Last Winter, the band's spellbinding full-length debut. Acoustic guitars have a special place in the songs of Fields -- before a swirl of synthesizers takes over, they set a deceptively gentle mood. They're the first of many layers in what amounts to a stacked but penetrable sound, one that's made all the more distinctive by the well-balanced male/female harmonies of Nick Peill and Thorunn Antonia. Standout tracks include the opening "Song for the Fields" (from their 7 from the Village EP) and the '70s-tinged "You Don't Need This Song (To Fix Your Broken Heart)."
Thanks, 84. Just listened to the first 3 tracks. Sounding good so far.
I stumbled upon The Whigs tonight. Ironically I saw their logo on television earlier today, not knowing it was for a band (seen below). When I came across it again browsing the music snob corner on Steve Dahl's website, I stopped and gave it a listen.
I dont think I've posted these guys before either, The National. I was a big fan of their 1st album Alligator, and their follow up Boxer is just as good. Good late night music. http://www.myspace.com/thenational

Just got into these cats. Not bad. I can dig it. Just might go and check 'em out in a few weeks.

Indeed! I saw them a couple months ago and my face melted to the floor (even though the crowd sucked..everyone just STOOD there..WTF!). But yea, they're honestly one of my favorite bands at the moment. Repetition has never sounded so good...
I'm breaking the rules here and posting an old band. I was reading Frick's picks at http://www.rollingstone.com and this band jumped out at me, so I gave it a listen.
Socrates Drank the Conium was a band from Greece in the early 70s. Check out this singer. He's the Greek Ed Vedder circa 72 . . . or Ed Vedder is the American Socrates Singer . . . or something like that.

I'm going to throw out a couple I've been enjoying latey:
Parts and Labor. The new album is quite good; they dont have any tracks from it on their Myspace, but the lead track Satellites I have posted below for your downloading pleasure. They have a knack for creating epic stuff...keeps building and building until it feels like its going to boil over http://www.savefile.com/files/1865178
Also the only band I have found that can make bagpipes rock.
Pete Rock and INI
For those who love "golden age" hip hop. Pete Rock is best known for his landmark albums with CL Smooth, but this criminally unknown one-off project from 1995 is nearly as good (for a long time only was available as a bootleg). The trademark droning hazy/jazzy production, intelligent lyrics...everything rap should be and usually isnt. A couple tracks to illustrate my point: Mind Over Matter Step Up
Isis
Sculptors of atmospheric, experimental (mainly instrumental) post-metal.
