I am very afraid.

Why?
Yeah, why? Is there some new development?
The dream is for everything to be "wired" (well connected) all the time.

I mean, plug something in a socket, and it starts looking to be connected to anything else nearby, by itself, w/ virtually no user control!

That leaves plenty of room for privacy violations, and plenty of opportunities for electronic attacks (economic and/or warfare).

I personally don't see the need for all that connectivity.
I'd be much more concerned about how to track and ban those crazy looking "IPs".

IPv6 is a ways off still. Tons of computers share the same IP as-is. We won't run out of IPv4 addresses in some time.
You will have options to turn off the connectivity, or just not plug in the ethernet wire to the refrigerator. Now you are starting to sound like Endzone :)

No, the dream is to have no need for an ethernet wire. Devices will automatically use standard protocol to communicate wirelessly w/ any device nearby. This isn't hyperbole.

I heard a talk last night from a guy who's in the business. He's delighted to be pushing that very thing, and he's explicit about how far-reaching he expects (and wants) it to go.
Well it is not IPv6 that you are afraid of, but the people who wish to monitor everything that you do. Plenty of people still do not use the net regularly and get along just fine without it. I don't see that changing any time soon. Those who wish to stay private can "stay off the grid" quite easily.
I fully expect them to give the option to turn it off, as you aren't the only person who doesn't want their refrigerator talking to their oven :).

Just wait until the machines become aware, so the refrigerator and oven go out of their way to make sure you won't get to eat your turkey dinner on Thanksgiving.

Skynet is just around the corner!
