With NCAAbbs Generation 4 ("Aurora") coming up soon, we have two options for how NCAAbbs should be organized. I'll leave this decision to you the community via this poll... please weigh the following drawbacks of each approach carefully before voting.
One mega board with subforums?
- Drawbacks:
--- Everybody has nearly the same URL. Subdomains (ecu.ncaabbs.com) would be more important in this setup.
--- Requires serious dev work to merge all the installs into one
--- Individual statistics per-conference would no longer exist
Multiple boards sharing dbase tables, like now.
- Drawbacks:
--- Unavoidable and unfixable avatar upload bug just like now
--- Unavoidable and unfixable "who's online" bug just like now
--- Lack of global statistics
--- Inability to ban a person from just ONE forum. Banning them from forum #3 on one board bans them from forum #3 on every single board.
--- Cannot move posts between conferences.
I vote for whatever is easiest on you.
dead heat
I voted for door number 2 because It seems like I would have to go through a lot of crap I dont care about to get to the forum I want to read.
one mega board would allow us to move posts cross-boards.... Like moving political posts from the MAC board to the Spin Room.
And if GTS implements subdomains for each conference and school, you'd never have to see the other stuff if you didn't want to, Terpy. I assume that lounge.ncaabbs.com would bring you straight to here....
Yeah but Id rather click than type. Im lazy.

Bookmarks are your friend. ;-)
Bookmarks suck too, hotlinks are my friend.

I would think a global board would be easier for fans who want to go back in forth between conferences........
This format has been around now for 4 years and I'm ready to try something new.
Setting it up to have 1 smack board for the entire NCAABBS would be a good thing.
I also think some of the boards get ignored like lounge and features because of seperate boards.
It's close.... come onnnnnnnnnnn mega board!
Megaboard
there is no substitute for large.
United we stand...little boards tucked away everywhere just sux0rs
is there increased or decreased danger from denial of service attacks or other attacks?
all things being equal, i think the mega board is the better move.
but all in all i would say the MOST important thing is what's going to be easiest for the operations staff to keep this place running.
I like the way things are now. No reason to change so far as I'm concerned. I like the conference stats. I don't like the same URLs.
If it ain't broken, don't fix it!

I like Subforums. Ability to move posts from conference-to-conference would be great... and 'less bugs' is always great
Both ideas suck. I say we all go join Rivals!

+1

Subforums had fair support despite nobody having seen them, and the whole "fear of change" bit.
Nearly everybody who voted for multi-boards who I showed a demo of subforums of in private switched their vote. I think we'll go with subs, and I have a really good idea to go with that layout.
Honestly GTS I like like it is now but my thing would be that it needs some tweaks like better navigation menus.
Keep all the school menus in the schools colors like it is now. Make the conference boards in their own colors as well.
As long as the new forums are easy to navigate and contain the favorite features that we've gotten used to using, I say change whatever.
Just don't wholesalely change everything like AOHell did a few years ago (specifically, with BlackVoices). Posters who had been there for years dropped off of the face of the earth.
I think more people will visit the board if each team has their own board, making them feel "special."

You already get that impression by simply applying a team skin and subdomain.
I think GTS kind of gave some people (including myself) the wrong impression by calling it a "mega board". I thought it meant that everyone would be posting in the same place which isn't the case.
I already voted, but I would switch it now to the "Mega Board".
Do it GTS. It just makes sense!!!

I like the "mega board" idea; it could make life a whole lot easier for the admins.

Yeah, as long as most people think they have their own address, it should make them more willing to join in on the fun!

I don't know if this poll accurately reflects how people are feeling about this. GTS, besides drawbacks, can you list some of the benefits of each of the boards as well.
Also, some people are going to be afraid of change and since they don't see anything wrong with the current system, they aren't going to vote against it. Is there a board currently out on the internet that people could go to that is set up in the "mega-board" type so that people can see it before voting one way or another?
I could be wrong, but I think it will be a lot like a bigger version of the conference boards --- where every team has their own board, but they're linked together through a common conference board as well.
Imagine that you had another layer so that each conference was where the teams are, and you could freely move from one conference to another within the "megaboard" just as you can now move from team to team within your conference. When you go to the ECU board, it's purple. When you go to the USM board it's black & gold. When you go to the Memphis board it's blue. You don't see the CUSA boards unless you go up to their level in the system.
I like the idea of having one main page, like now, where you can select the conference you like. I would suggest that a board be created for every NCAA Division I league. The leagues can be listed in tiers with the less active ones pushed down to a lower row.
Row One: ACC, ASun, Big10, Big12, BigEast, CUSA, MAC, MWC, Pac-10, SEC, SunBelt, WAC.
Row Two: A-10, BigSky, BigSouth, CAA, IvyLeague, MVC, OVC, Patriot, Southern, Southland, WCC.
Row Three: AEC, BigWest, Gateway, GreatWest, Horizon, MAAC, MEAC, Mid-Con, NEC, Pioneer, SWAC.
I would like to see one discussion board for each league though. Merge all the Smack Boards and Ticket Exchanges into two big forums accessible from the front page. Get rid of all the Football Talk and Basketball Talk Boards. Just have one forum per league.
MemphisTigers.org will require it's own subforum area regardless of what ultimately happens.

We're putting it in a clean room where you can't commit unspeakable crimes against humanity to our clean new themes! MUAHAHHAHAHA.

LOL
Just make sure it involves a padded room and I won't hurt anybody including myself.
GTS - what about scalability? If you get to a point where one server won't handle all of the traffic, how easy is it to split boards onto separate servers? What about if a subset of boards goes nuts and you might want to isolate its performance from the rest of the site?

Load balanced cluster. And please -- I'd like to put off such logistic nightmares as long as possible.
Do what you want.
Opinions be damned.
Screw everyone else do what you want. You got everyone opinion now do what is best for the site.

That sounds like something scout would do.
lmfao lmfao lmfao
I say we sell out to Rivals!
So much for voting.........

I think this layout turned out much better than I expected
BamaBlazer Wrote:I think this layout turned out much better than I expected
All I wanted was mild support from the poll. The option for the way we have it setup now was at two big disadvantages:
- People are scared of change. Any change.
- I had no real good visual to show them what it would look like.
I got that mild support, and unanimous support from those who help work on the site. That was good enough for me.
