Just saw GBV!! Kinda. It was a tribute show with about 20 different bands from Chicago to Northern Kentrucky. Bob was even there. He called the venue I was at (the Southgate House, Newport Ky) the best venue he's ever played at. He said that in the current or so Blender. I walked right passed him on the balcony and thought to myself, "is that Pollard? No, his hair isn't that gray." It was a good time. Lots of great songs heard with pretty good accuracy.

That sounds like a great show. I was listening to them today and trying to learn a few songs on the guitar/bass.

I drove by the Clearwater theatre near my house the other day and saw Local H on the marquee for a show later this month. As I was logging on here to let niuhuskie84 know, I checked out their website to find out the exact date and saw much bigger news. Beginning May 7th, Local H is doing a 7 night stand at the Beat Kitchen, each night playing a different album all the way through, including one night of B-sides and rarities. On the final night, they'll perform there newest record, 12 Angry Months. Sounds pretty cool. Week long passes available too.

PS, 84 - The Clearwater show is Friday, March 14th. I'm thinking about going.

I usually shy around local acts, but caught a great one a few weeks ago. Bad Veins w/ Von Bondies. Didn't really care for the Bondies, IMO they aren't relevant anymore. Bad Veins put on a great show, pretty amazing what they do for only having two members. They were at SXSW last week, along with a few other Cincinnati bands.

Last night I saw the Drive By Truckers. A little embarassed I didn't recognize much of what they played. But made me want to dig deeper into their collection. Great show, soo friggin loud. I wonder how much Jason Isbell wrote for them. I was quite impressed with the diversity of the crowd, but considering their music I really shouldn't have been. Oh and they played for well over 2 hours! The Whigs (which I know some of you love) opened, but I missed the whole set. Didn't think they'd actually start on time. And apparently they didn't start on time, they drove 18 hours straight from Austin. Wish I woulda caught their set, cause I heard it was pretty good.

Awesome show. I love Amy. She pulled her hood over her head and sang her lines of Your Ex-Lover is Dead, so damn sexy as she cooed into the mic. Not a bad song on the set list. I was just happy Torquil didn't sing his ballad, "Meet Me at the Barricade." At the end of the show, (don't know their names) the keyboardist and the drummer went off for about 5 minutes. And then after the encore, Amy stays on the stage and says, "I'm not done yet." Was hoping for some of her solo work, but Torquil came back and sung a song with her. Don't miss this guys!
On Saturday I say Thao Nguyen and the Get Down Stay Down w/ Why? and Xiu Xiu. I'll have to check out Thao more, cause I heard they're great but I didn't get into them. Why? drew the crowd (which was quite considerable. The place was packed) seeing as he and his band are local boys. Did not dissapoint. Great show. Everyone was into the spirit of things. After Why? played, about a 1/3 of the crowd left and they missed the best part of the night. Xiu Xiu blew my mind away. I'm only familar with Fabulous Muscles, so hearing all this new (to me) sh!t was quite an experience. Great use of instruments. Outstanding time. Xiu Xiu didn't finish until shortly before two and the whole show began at about 10. And only $10. I feel I got my money's worth.
I've boughten tickets to see Lucero, Okkervil River and Feist this month. It's been a great year so far.

I saw Joan Jett and Cheap Trick last weekend. Great show. I've always liked Joan Jett somewhat, but I came away from that concert really liking her. She rocked. They cranked the volume for Cheap Trick and the mix was muddy, especially the first five songs or so. The acoustics aren't great in that building to begin with. So, it's a tricky situation. Still though, it was an entertaining show.
BTW, today is officially Cheap Trick day in Illinois. They had the State Rep who proposed it there to make the announcement.

OK, so I know Im probably in the minority with this kind of music, but Stars of the Lid were absolutely stunning on Saturday night (Lakeshore Theatre, Chicago). No, not your typical kind of concert, and a sleeping bag or pillow probably would have been a good accessory. But all I have to say is I was in complete awe the entire time

Unfortunately, no. I am however going to see Cut Copy next Wed. at Abbey Pub. Honestly their new one is my favorite album of the year; I don't think pop/dance gets any better
http://www.myspace.com/cutcopy
And then I still have M83 on the horizon. "Kim and Jessie" is the single of the year so far IMO. Straight out of John Hughes film perhaps, but it nails the 80's nostalgia flawlessly where so many others fail miserably

Have been on a little concert binge over the past week and a half. Saw Lucero in Covington, Ky. Woulda been a great show had the punks up front not been there. Y'all didn't tell me Lucero would draw this type of crowd! Aside from beer hurled onto me and having to push back mosh pits and thwart crowd surfers, it was a good time. They put on a good show, it's good music. I was expecting more of an indie crowd.
Then I traversed Ohio to see Feist play in Athens. It was about a four hour drive, but worth every second. First off, I love driving. Second, I love backroads. Third, I love college towns. And fourth, I absolutely love Feist. Despite the fact that I had boughten two tickets and my sister couldn't make the show and I had to give the ticket up (even couchsurfers couldn't make the show), it was still an excellent time. It was in an auditorium, which is perfect for her. And she played my favorite song of hers, "Inside and Out." There were also a couple of talented females orchestrating some art on the projector, which made the experience of the songs so much more intimate and endearing. I also got a speeding ticket coming home.
Next I saw Okkervil River with local acts Wussy and the Turnball AC's in Convington. Wussy opened, and are clear and away one of the premeir Cincy acts. One of the dudes from the Ass Pony's created the band (if you know whom they are). They put on a great show, surprisingly this was the first time I've seen 'em play. And Okkervil River flat out kicked ass. See these guys play if they're in town. You won't be disappointed. One of the better shows I've seen in my life.
Lastly, I caught local heroes, Bad Veins at my favorite watering hole for a free show. These guys are quite genuine and inventive. I've talked about 'em before, but didn't know much about 'em. Anywhoos, whilst drinking some Bell's Oberon, my buddy and I were able wrangle our way towards the front admist the capacity of 150 (probably a fire code violation, the place can't hold that many). So it's a two piece band. One drummer, one singer. The singer sings into a telephone that's rigged onto a mic stand, which gives off a distorted resonance. Makes the vocals kind of inaudible esp after situated very close, but it sounds so friggin cool. He sometimes sings thru a mega-phone. Which I love. There's more to the band than that surprisingly, the lead singer also plays keyboard and they have a running tape reel that does something, not sure what though.
Just bought tickets to see Ra Ra Riot tomorrow and got tix to see Tegan & Sara a few days before my birthday. Yay! Wow this post was long. Sorry!

Frickity-FRACK!!!! The Urge Overkill show has been postponed due to the Bottom Lounge having trouble getting their liquor liceance in order. Aparentely, the bottom lounge has no clue how hard it is for me to schedule shows now-a-days.

Holy F*ck! Danced my ass off the entire night! Tiny tiny venue and nobody was there, less than 50 people. What more can I say, than Holy F@ck! What a show. Then they blew the PA halfway into the last song, improvised a little and had to call it quits. My mind was blown. Simply incredible.

As it turns out I like the Lemonheads. Since the Urge Overkill show was postponed, we looked for another show and kept the 90s alive with the Lemonheads at the Abbey. I never got too much into them back in the day. In hindsight, that may have been a mistake, seems I like them.
Twas a good show. Evan Dando seemed to be in a good mood. They opened with a Buck Owens song and then played the entire It's a Shame About Ray record. Then the band left and Dando performed solo for about a half hour. The band returned for a few more numbers at the end. Good stuff. Polly Noonan, the girl on the cover of the Shame about Ray album and a Chicago actress, was in the crowd and she led the band into the song "Bit Part."
Canasta and The Ladies and Gentlemen opened. Canasta was fun, TL&G sucked and were waaaaaaaaaaay toooooooooo loud for the venue. We had to wait them out in the bar. Brutal. BTW, they're fronted by former Box-O-Car Skid Marks and the drummer is the guy from Material Issue.

Good to hear the backup plan worked out!
I bit the bullet and picked up a couple more tickets today. I will officially be seeing:
The Black Angels @ The Logan Square Auditorium (6/20)
My Bloody Valentine @ The Aragon Ballroom (9/27)
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds @ The Riviera Theatre (9/29)
The only question that remains is: do I go for My Morning Jacket @ The Chicago Theater on 10/10? And I wonder why I have no savings...

Saw Mates of State last night w/ the Headlights. Awesome show. I haven't heard any of the new album until the show. They mostly played Bring it Back and a bit of Team Boo as well as some off the new album. Whatever the dude's name is, sang a beautiful cover of Nico's "These Days." I had no clue what they were gonna play for the encore, since they exhausted all their hits. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a late late show though. Got home at 2 (after a game of pool). The Headlights were great too, but missed the first 15 or so minutes waiting to get in. I picked up both their albums, but didn't get the album with the only song I recognized. Turns out it was on their EP. They were playing pool next to us and their game ended quicker than ours did. Got to talk with them a bit, thanked 'em. Nice people. I complemented the lead singer's shoes. She looked like Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. Also the Mates are awesome too, very friendly, well Kori seemed happy to done, apparently she's pregnant.

We met my family at the Zoo today and Sister Hazel was playing a free show. They weren't too shabby and they actually pulled a good crowd beyond your curious zoo goers.
My sister is a fan of Sister Hazel and bands of the like. So, here's my conversation with her.
Me: So, when did these guys change their name back to Sister Hazel?
Sister; What? They've always been Sister Hazel. What are you talking about?
Me: Wasn't it just a couple years ago they were called The Fray?
Zing! Seriously though, swap a guitar for a piano and I'm not sure I could tell the difference.

URGE OVERKILL
Interesting show last night. Definitely a good one for old school and hard corps fans as far as the set list goes. They played some great stuff from the back-catalog, they chose some different cuts from Saturation and ETD that I hadn't heard them play since the reunion, and they played THREE new tracks. The new tunes, were very solid and gave me hope the new record is coming together.
The strange thing was I thought the show was heading for a train wreck at the outset. Nash sounded GAWD AWFUL. He was straining, out of breath and just sounded odd....as if fighting through a cold or something. Fortunately, his voice warmed up as the show progressed. It peaked toward the middle, but held out enough to get through the night.
All-in-all, I loved it and cant wait for a new record. 84, did you go?

just got back from seeing the bravery, chris cornell and Linkin Park @ Projekt revolution. Busta rhymes was supposed to be there too, but cancelled, which sucked.
i had never heard of the bravery, but i thought they were pretty good. I had also, pretty much never heard of chris cornell, until i recently found out about the album he's doing with timbaland. Anyway, he was alright, not really my speed. That "set it off" song was cool.
Linkin Park was amazing of course. Not to mention the venue i saw it at always has great sound, which makes for an impeccable listening experience.

Yea, I havent had a chance to post a review yet. Overall it was about what I expected. Nothing mindblowing, but a lot of solid performances. The weather alternated between rainy and overcast (Sat) to sunny and very humid (Sun).
To start out, Friday night I saw Mission of Burma perform Vs.. I had heard the album but wasn't super-familiar with it. All in all not bad IMO. I skipped out on Sebadoh as I had no real interest in them and hit up the record tent instead. Made away with a ton of good, cheap jazz vinyl:
-Lee Morgan- The Sidwewinder
-Miles Davis- Sketches of Spain
-Thelonious Monk- Straight, No Chaser
-The Paul Desmond Quartet- Live
-Thelonious Monk Quartet with Johnny Griffin- Recorded at the Five Spot Cafe
-The Oscar Peterson Trio- Bursting Out With the All Star Big Band
-Dave Pike- Jazz for the Jet Set
-Jazz at the Philharmonic- Flip Phillips, Lester Young, Buddy Rich
-Brian Eno/Larajj- Ambient 3, Day of Radiance
Public Enemy closed out Friday playing It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back, and for being 20 years past their prime were still excellent. Flava Flav needs to learn when to shut up and just do his thing ("Thank you Chicago for making me the #1 celebrity reality TV star! Remember to watch my new show Under One Roof!" without a bit of irony. Boos quickly followed...). But overall PE can still bring it. Chuck D is amazing. Honestly, I had more fun at this set than I expected to.
Saturday I skipped in and out of a lot of sets. The first set I really wanted to see was Caribou, and they really blew me away. Very cerebral, chilled out stuff. But I think far and away the highlight was The Fleet Foxes. I've really dug their album but wasnt sure how it would translate into a big, outdoor live setting. Holy crap can those guys sing. You could literally hear a pindrop during their performance. I had chills the entire time. Yea, they wear their influences on their sleeves but so what. Some of the most incredibly gorgeous melodies you will hear this year.
Which leads me to...Vampire Weekend. I just do not understand the hype for these guys. I find their album bland, and live they were even more boring. I left after a couple songs.
!!! (chk chk chk) was the other band I really wanted to see. Was a rollicking good dance party, although wasnt quite as good as I expected. And yes, that dude wears short shorts without any shame.
Other than that, Jarvis Cocker was very good. Not familiar with most of his stuff, but the guy is obviously used to the big stage and has a great presence, which was a nice change from most of the "up and coming" acts. The headliner was Animal Collective...andother band whose hype I dont understand.
Sunday was the better day. Boris was the first act I caught (Japanese heavy metal) and they absolutely tore the roof of the place. I think a lot of people get turned off when they hear "heavy meta", but Boris have so many other influences in their music its really not a fair comparison. Halfway into the set they blew their amps out. The drummer in broken english says with a wry smile "Not enough electrical powa". I dont think the entire city of Chicago had enough electricity for what they were trying to push. They rebooted and played one more song, then the amp blew out again. So the drummer stands up on his bass drum, knocks over the snares, and dives into the crowd to end it off. Set only lasted a 1/2 hour but I think it was my favorite of the weekend. The also opened and closed the set with a gong clash. The only band at P4k with a gong, and the only one that deserved one.
Spiritualized was another high point on Sunday. The gospel singers who did backups were incredible as well. Yea, its drugged out music, but it was still the perfect soundtrack as the sun set.
M Ward was solid, although it wasnt the best setting for him. On the quiter songs you could hear the sound bleed from Ghostface on the side stage.
The biggest disappointment was Cut Copy getting held up at the airport. The side stage was absolutely PACKED and they were the one act I didnt want to miss on Sunday, but when they made the announcement I was too tired and claustrophobic to stand around any more so I just left. i guess they wound up going on around 9:40 (were scheduled for 7:30), and only had time to play 4 songs. Word is they were excellent. even for that brief period. But I saw them once at the Abbey Pub (and they're playing Metro is Sept), so didnt feel too bad about it.
Spoon overall was "meh". At that point I was exhausted from the 3 days, so I cut out early and beat the rush.
07-29-2008, 03:22 PM
Glad ya had fun 84. I missed my chance to see !!!, glad to hear they didn't disappoint. Equally good to hear that the Fleet Foxes sound great live. Looking forward to seeing them if they ever come round here. Need to get into Spiritualized, they talk a lot about them over on the Woxy boards.
July only saw two shows. First was during our Rock-n-Roll Carnival over the July 4th weekend. Just a bunch of local bands, Wussy being the highlight (well it was the only band I saw).
Last Monday I caught Ha Ha Tonka/ Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. This was a fine fine show. I was a dancing mess! I wasn't a huge Boris Yeltsin fan before, but I am now. The lead singer couldn't even sing, he was replaced by the drummer. Kinda odd how cool it turned out. The drummer's a somewhat native Cincinnatian apparently, and he covered Arrested Devlopment's "Mr. Wendel." Not sure why, it may have had something to do with Cincinnati, I was pretty drunk singing everyword and jumping up and down. It was great.
I'm thinking about seeing Wilco next Monday in Indy, but I doubt I'll make it.
The Wilco show might not happen, but I'll probably check out two bands I'm not terribly familiar with next month: We Are Scientists and Margot & the Nuclear So & So's. Then it's Stars again in September!

Some good stuff just announced: TV on the Radio will be coming through town in fall, as will Fujiya & Miyagi. I'm going to have to hit both of those.
I've also been meaning to check out some shows at the recently reopened Jazz Showcase. I've heard a lot of good things about the new location and the acoustics.

Ditto on the TVoTR show, I'm gonna check 'em out again in Indianapolis even though they are coming to Cincinnati the night before. The Vogue is just a nice venue and seeing TV play there a few years ago was quite an experience. One of my favorite shows. October is looking good for the Cincy scene. We got Heartless Bastards on the 2nd and Ryan Adams on the 3rd. I believe the TV show is middle of October? Can't wait for the new album.

Local H does a mean TVOTR cover.
Also, Bob Pollard is headling Midpoint.

Midpoint is gonna be pretty sweet. Along with established local acts, Mates of State, Say Hi, and Why? are gonna be preforming along with Bob. Can't wait. Free Scion shuttles to Northern Ky from what I'm hearing as well!

Christ, was that awesome. Its what an honest to goodness balls to the walls rock show should feel like. The dude is 50 and yet he's still up there doing mid air karate kicks and spewing lyrics with more energy that most 20-somethings. ..commands a stage like no one else. Phenomenal.

that sounds amazing. energy is the most important thing at a show.

Saw the National and a bit of the Breeders... for free! An Obama rally the other night. Quite awesome. No new National songs, but the last two had the crowd gasping for breathe. Fake Empire and Mr November. Jeez! It was obvious to us that Mr November was gonna be the last song, but you could just feel the cinergy and the energy around. For this one brief moment in time, it was quite special to be a part of. And Natalie Portman, the Natalie Portman also gave a brief speech. It was grand. The National didn't disappoint. Third time seeing them, first time hearing All the Wine played. And thankfully, they played Abel. What a great song. Only caught the encore of the Breeders unfortunately.
Caught the Heartless Bastards a few weeks ago, with the new band. Like what I'm hearing. And the opener, Longhorn Slim, kicked ass.

As I mentioned in the TVOTR thread, I caught play in Indy yesterday. The Vogue is a special place to see a show. We were left of center in the front row directly behind the speakers. Not completely ideal, as I was tone def for a day, but still a decent spot. The set list was awesome, wish they added more older material, but time, apparently was very limited, as it being a Sunday night. By very limited, I mean they could have played for another 30 minutes. Though I'm glad they played a lot of the new album (since they're supporting their new album, guess they have to
), cause it makes me appreciate Dear Science all the more. I'm completely sold on Dear Science. The highlight of the night was Wolf Like Me, dear god did the place erupt. And Province is catamount to a religious experience when seen live.
On a side note, a lot of people bicker about in-between-song banter from the band, and I love it, but not these guys, just business. And with this guy's it's not a bad thing, just means more music!

Apparently Hum is doing a 1 off reunion show on NYE in Chicago. This is tempting.....

It sounds like a once in a lifetime chance. On the other hand, i shudder to think what it will be like trying to contend with Wicker Park mayhem on NYE...thats almost enough to make me say forget it.

Well, they just added a 2nd Hum show on 1/1. Looks like I'll be able to see them after all (and it helps the ticket is $40 cheaper than the NYE show)
But the real question is, when you turn your car on, does it return the favor?

Upcoming shows for me, Ra Ra Riot 12/10, Heartless Bastards 12/19-12/20 (one of the nights, they're playing at the same place... for free!!), 1/21- Kings of Leon (the last album failed to impress), but they're sweet live.
