no comment.
2006 seemed a little lackluster to me. But there were a few discs that got a lot of play for me.

What is the story on these guys? I wanna say they were a House Band for some award show (MTV Music '06) and sounded like they'd have a cool cd to listen to.

Who all is in it? Jack White of The White Stripes and who else?
Racontours - Broken Boy Soldiers
Audioslave - Revelations
M. Ward - Post War
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam (not sure about it's staying power, but I liked it)

I'm probably forgetting some and there's probably a whole lot more I never got around to hearing in full (ie Tom Waits, the Who, Bob Dylan).

I was excited about the Flamming Lips, but the record didn't do it for me. I like a few tunes, but it never stuck

Jack White and Brenden Benson are the main songwriters and guitar players. Brenden Benson was/is a solo artist who put out a few good pop/rock records. Apparantly, he and White are neighbors in Detroit.

Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler play drum and bass. They are from the band The Greenhorns....another Detroit connection.

Supposedly, this is more than just a one-time deal for these guys. They say they plan on continuing as a working band. And, yes, they were the house band for one of the MTV award shows.

I gotta agree with you on that one. Pretty big let down.

I think I'm going to see them Dec 30 at the Riv. They're doing a NYE show the night after too, but tickets for that are 30 bucks more. I missed them when I was at Lollapalooza, I heard they played great.

Are tix still available? Maybe I'll talk my way into going to that show.

I heard somewhere that they were covering Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy."

Sooooo are they good? What is your review of the cd?
PirateTreasureNC Wrote:Sooooo are they good? What is your review of the cd?

Yes, they are very good. They have a twin guitar thing going on. Not quite Thin Lizzy, but still some cool stuff that you don't hear a lot of lately. If you've heard the tunes played on the radio and liked them, then you'll like the record. "Steady as she goes" was pretty big on Mtv and on the radio here in Chicago. If you're not familiar, give the samples on iTunes or Amazon a listen. They'll give you a decent idea.

Supposedly, the big thing about this band is their live performances. Everyone who has seen them raves about how great they are live.
Was Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins a 2006 release? If so, thow that at the top of my list.

Also, the staff of the NIU student newspaper put out their top ten lists:
http://www.northernstar.info/FlavorFeature/

Not sure about that first guys musical tastes.
Everything I keep reading praises the crap out of the new Hold Steady, but I just cant get over the fact that they sound like bar band.
niuhuskie84 Wrote:Everything I keep reading praises the crap out of the new Hold Steady, but I just cant get over the fact that they sound like bar band.

The Hold Steady freakin rock! I'm seeing them tomorrow for free at Shake It records here in Cincinnati. I understand why people don't like 'em, because it's more spoken word. But the lyrics are amazing. The Greenhorns went to my rival HS, East Central in Indiana. Dyno, I was just about to start this thread too! Here's my top 10:

1) Tilly and the Wall- Bottoms of Barrells
2) Kimya Dawson- Remember that I love You
3) The Hold Steady- Boys and Girls in America
4) TV on the Radio- Cookie Mountain
5) Amy Millan- Honey from the Tombs
6) Neko Case- Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
7) Emily Haines- Knives don't have your back
8) Asobi Seksu- Citrus
9) Cat Power- The Greatest
10) Camera Obscura- Let's Get out of this Country
Not sure how I left this puppy out

Beirut- Gulag Orkestar
Band of Horses- Everything all the Time
Heartless Bastards- All this Time (really, really can't believe I forgot this one)
Destroyer- Destroyer's Rubies
Joanna Newsom- Y's
Decemberists- Crane Wife
The Sounds- Dying to say this to you
No love for Carrie Underwood? lmfao lmfao lmfao
Honestly, I love watching american idol, and I didnt like her on Idol all that much but if you like country music you have to admit her stuff is pretty good. Before he cheats is a darned good song. Jesus takes the wheel got played too much but it was ok.

And she is freakin hot.
Terpy Wrote:but if you like country music you have to admit her stuff is pretty good.

I dont. At least not the mainstream kind.
Forgot one;

Regina Spektor- Begin to Hope
Here's my list....

I didn't pick by most critically acclaimed or most influential, but by how much I listened to them.

Band of Horses - Everything All The Time
Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist
Glen Phillips - Mr Lemons
Gomez - How We Operate
Guster - Ganging Up On The Sun
Keane - Under The Iron Sea
Kill Hannah - Until There Is Nothing Left Of Us
Mates Of State - Bring It Back
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
Ray LaMontagne - Till The Sun Turns Black
Rock Kills Kid - Are You Nervous?
Sufjan Stevens - The Avalanche
The Lemonheads - The Lemonheads
The Subways - Young For Eternity
Under The Influence Of Giants - Under The Influence Of Giants

CD That I don't understand the press for.....TV on the Radio - Return To Cookie Mountain. I have listened to it 3 times, everytime after someone tells me how good it is, but I just don't get it. The singing literally hurts my ears.
Ok what is the deal on the Deftones? They appear to band I should like but from what little i have heard from them I don't.

On the new Pearl Jam.... I liked 10, hated Vs. (except for a few songs, and thought Vitology was ok. Enjoyed that tune from a few years ago " Do the Evolution."

Honestly I think forcing themselves to go back undergournd was career suicide...not to say you should sell out to sell cds though.
I didnt buy it, but I really like what I have heard from their most recent CD.

I think you gotta respect Pearl Jam, they were probably the most popular rock band on the planet and they pretty much gave it up at the height of their popularity. They pretty much did what Nirvana did without having someone shoot them self. lmfao lmfao lmfao
Good Call on Sufjan Stevens.

Re Pearl Jam and "career suicide..." It might look like career suicide to an outsider or to someone judeging by record sales, but it helped maintain sanity and keep the band back together. They were dangerously close to imploding around 1995.

I also think you have to remember that some of that wasn't intentional. Deciding not to make videos was obviously their choice and they were probably prophetic in seeing that the MTV brands would all but stop playing videos.

The other thing that hurt them was their battle against Ticketmaster. I truly applaud them for that and very much wish that they would have been successful in their campaign. However, being the only band to stand up wasn't enought to put pressure on Ticketmaster or the government to make a change.

Well whait I am saying is..most people that have heard of Pearl Jam did so b/c of Ten. Anyone not around when that cd came out would probably not even know if they exist.
I dont know about that, their songs still get plenty of radio play. Heck, I just looked it up, ten came out in August of 1991, I had just turned 9 years old. Im pretty sure I had no idea who Pearl Jam was until atleast 3 or 4 years after that.

That is almost like saying anyone born after 1970 would have no idea of who the Beatles were.
I mean Kurt Cobain died 12 years ago but you still see high school kids wearing Nirvana shirts every once in awhile. Music is timeless.
I agree you can go back and listen to "past" bands.... but really how much PJ is on radio enough to say hey I wanna check them out? Most of theiur radio play is off Ten. I'm not hating on them per se' but....

As for Nirvana Nirvana from Bleach, to Nevermind, to Insecticide, to IN Utero, to Unplugged, to Muddy Banks.... had a string of commercially successfull releases that radio, esp. college radio, still play from.
I dunno, 5 of their 8 studio albums have gone platinum. and If I had to guess, their current release will get to Platinum sooner than later. They also have a million live albums out. Their greatest hits album released a couple of years ago went Platinum too.
Pitchfork asked some musicians who were in their top records for 2006

Couple highlights:

Beck
1. TV on the Radio: Return to Cookie Mountain
2. Miss Violetta Beauregarde: Odi Profanum Vulgus et Arceo
3. Spank Rock: YoYoYoYoYo
4. Liars: Drum's Not Dead
5. Madlib: The Dudley Perkins "Expressions" Instrumentals
6. Crystal Skulls: Outgoing Behavior
7. Dr. Dog: Takers and Leavers
8. Girl Talk: Night Ripper
9. Cornelius: Sensuous
10. The Raconteurs: Broken Boy Soldier

Jenny Lewis
1. Whispertown 2000: Livin' in a Dream
If Randy Newman and Lucinda Williams did it in a New York minute, it might sound like this. This record has some of my favorite lyrics, ever.
2. Bob Dylan: Modern Times
Somehow, this sounds like a Christmas record. Santa, you ain't gonna work for me no more!
3. Lil Wayne: Tha Carter II
I feel a kinship with Lil Wayne, because we both made our first mil before we were 17. "**** bitches, get money..."
4. M. Ward: Post-War
This record puts me in a trance. Not an evil or murderous trance, but a happy, old-timey one.
5. Red Hot Chili Peppers: Stadium Arcadium
1 for the now, 11 for the later? John Frusciante's guitar tone and background vocals are dreamy. I didn't see it, but apparently these guys tore up Fuji rock.

by the way, Pitchfork also has the top 25 worst album covers of the year and top 25 videos of the year.

Nothing holds a candle to the great state of Illinois! ;-)

Oh, you meant the record...Yeah, that's the one I was referring to...or at least meant to be referring to.

Is Illinois (the state) really all that cool outside the Windy City? On my own Sufjan Stevens like journey (I plan to drink at a tavern in each state), I stopped in Effingham to have a pint (Some Goose Island!), didn't seem like much albeit, though we did pass Bluff City, and we talked a bunch of sh!t and didn't back it up. Bluff City was near a sign that said "Foot High Pies." We didn't stop to see if the pies were actually a foot high though, we just assumed they were bluffing.
Illinois is a great state....even beyond Chicago.

PS-that's a funny story.

One of my friends at NIU is from Effingham. That is kind of middle of nowhere lmfao. The only time I've been through there was when I took the Amtrak out to New Mexico, and I didnt get off the train at that stop.

It really is true that the Chicagoland area and the rest of Illinois are almost like 2 different states. Just looking at the size of the state and the differences from the 3rd largest metropolis in the US to extremely rural farming areas, you can see pretty quickly what a wide range of people there are. Even politically theres a lot of disconnect. Chicago and the metro area in general is overwhelmingly "blue" (theres only 1 republican alderman, and a repub mayor hasnt been elected since the 1920s), while much of the rest of the state votes 'red".

There are well over 200 suburbs within close proximity to Chicago. Each has its very own unique identity. Moving further out, there are small getaway touristy towns like Galena. If you get down to the far southern part of the state, especially around the Mississippi River, you start to get into some extremely beautiful country. For example, the Mississippi Palisades (i actually think sufjan has a song about that one). In some areas, you can still find tallgrass prairies, which now only count for a fraction of a percent of the state, but which used to cover it. There are tons of state parks, Starved Rock probably being the most popular. Theres the state capital in Springfield. I could go on all day. I guess it just depends of what your definition of "cool" is.

You pretty much summed it up. Would love to check out some of what you mentioned. It's gotta be better than Effingham. Eff them.
