On Monday, two-sport star Chris Hawkins of Henderson (N.C.) Southern Vance High School verbally committed to NC State, picking the Wolfpack over North Carolina, as well as others. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound quarterback had received scholarship offers from Carolina, as well as Wake Forest and Virginia. Michigan had also shown him some interest.
"State was just the place I felt like I fit best," Hawkins told the Durham Herald-Sun. "I visited twice during basketball season and talked to some of the football players then and liked them."
This past season, as a junior, Hawkins completed 52 of 94 passes for 1,070 yards, with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also ran for 728 yards on just 44 carries, with seven scores.
"I like the way State runs schemes that keep the defense off-guard," he told the paper.
On the basketball court Hawkins averaged 20 points , eight assists and six rebounds as a junior for Southern Vance. He hopes to play basketball at NC State, as well as football.
