I just picked up a three year NROTC scholarship today, meaning that I don't have to pay $11,000 a year in tuition, will receive $300 a month stipend, and book stipend (approx. $500). In addition, I will get all the nifty uniforms and will commission in spring of 2009 as an Ensign in the United States Navy. 03-woohoo
congrats!

How long do you have to serve after you graduate?
Does this mean you can get an education and still end up in Iraq?

Depends on my service selection.

Aviation I believe is somewhere between 6-8 years including flight school.

SWO is about 4 years.

Nuke is probably somewhere around 6-8.

Special warfare I'm not too sure about, but most likely is a fairly long service since there is so much training and its so hard to get into.

Yep, or possibly Iran or N. Korea. Finally, we get to fight the commies again. 05-mafia

Quite a commitment, some of that stuff you are going to be 30, or darn close to it by the time you are finished.

After going through the ROTC program are you automatically an an officer or how does that work?

For Navy, you go through 4 year program (or 5 if approved for engineers) and get a bachelors. Then you commission as an Ensign. The VT battalion requires that we have a scholarship after the first 2 years or you're kicked out. Other schools I think commission even if your not on scholarship.

Marines you attend OCS after junior year and must pass. Army has LDAC after junior year which I'm pretty sure they have to pass, and AF has basic after sophmore year. Same rules for bachelors. All these guys are commissioned 2nd Lts.

Yeah, the committment may seem long, but the Navy also invested 4 years worth of tuition and training into you, so it only makes sense you pay it back. I intend to make it a career anyways.

Seemed like an obvious joke to me... I think you need to calm down.

I agree. It was obviously in regards to Kerry's statement.

that's what i took it as too.
I think Rebelkev is pissed off at me because I'm pro stem cell research. Its good to see the joke didn't fly over everyone's head.
Kev just likes to swear a lot.

BR, check the bat cave.
Just did. Man, that last post was reactionary of me. It should be read in jest. I support the right of people to say whatever they want.

By the way, congrats, T-Monay

I know it was meant as a joke, but if I was T-Monay I think I would take offense.

I didn't find it offensive. I found it funny. Its quite creative. It takes Kerry's insult and twists it so that his advice is also useless.

Don't get an education and you end up in Iraq. Get an education and you end up in Iraq anyways. Basically Kerry's telling the students that their time in college is useless.
This one is done.
