Game Story...
Second-ranked Florida State
suffered just its second Atlantic Coast Conference loss as Torry
Holt had two long touchdowns and North Carolina State
intercepted Chris Weinke six times in a stunning 24-7 victory.
The Seminoles (1-1, 0-1 ACC) entered the season with a 47-1 mark
in six years in the conference. Their only blemish was a 33-28
setback at Virginia on November 2nd, 1995 and they had won 18
straight ACC games.
But Florida State was held to its lowest point total since a
31-0 loss to Miami in the 1988 season opener and had its chances
for a national championship severely damaged.
"Yeah I'm Pretty stunned," said Florida State coach Bobby
Bowden. "To get beat like that, I'm very surprised, surprised
how we fell apart. Our offense just could not execute at all.
That's the biggest surprise I've got. For some reason we
couldn't throw the ball and catch."
Holt returned a punt 68 yards for a score and also caught a
63-yard scoring pass. He finished with nine catches for 135
yards as the Wolfpack defeated a second-ranked opponent for the
first time since beating Houston in 1967. In last year's 48-35
loss at Florida State, Holt set an ACC record with five TD
receptions.
"To go out there and hold that offensive football team to seven
points, that's miraculous, that is miraculous," said North
Carolina coach Mike O'Cain. "Nobody gave us a dog's chance of
coming in here and winning this football game, not a prayer."
Holt's punt return gave North Carolina State (2-0, 1-0 ACC) the
lead for good, 14-7, with 3:14 left in the opening quarter. He
caught a 63-yard pass from Jamie Barnette 5:29 into the final
period and Devon Smith caught a two-point conversion pass.
"He hurt us again bad, he sure did," Bowden said about Holt. "He
made the plays that beat us -- he and that quarterback."
Weinke, who played minor-league baseball the last six years,
completed just 9-of-32 passes for 243 yards for Florida State.
He fumbled twice in a season-opening win over Texas A&M and his
six interceptions broke the school record held by Bill Cappleman
in 1968.
"Big players show up at big games, and I wanted to be one of
those big players," said North Carolina State cornerback Lloyd
Harrison, who had two interceptions.
Peter Warrick caught four passes for 130 yards and a touchdown
for the Seminoles, who have finished no lower than fourth the
last 11 years. Warrick gave the Seminoles the lead with a
74-yard reception from Weinke on the first play from scrimmage.
North Carolina State answered with an impressive 10-play,
99-yard drive capped by Barnette's 31-yard pass to Eric Leak to
cut the lead to 7-6 with 5:34 left in the opening quarter.
Holt fielded a punt near the right sideline, cut across midfield
and sprinted up the left sideline to give the Wolfpack a 13-7
advantage with 3:14 left in the first.
After a scoreless second quarter, Scott Earwood kicked a 39-yard
field goal to give North Carolina State a 16-7 lead 4:52 into
the third period. Holt's TD reception accounted for the final
margin.
Weinke was pulled for Marcus Outzen in the fourth quarter, then
returned to throw his sixth interception. Outzen came back and
was 4-of-8 for 42 yards, but the Seminoles did not come close to
scoring.
"The bottom line is execution and I didn't execute," Weinke
said. "There was stuff open that I just missed. That is the
factor in the game. If I hit some of those open guys at least
we have a chance to win the game. You don't expect to lose
around here. Every time you play somebody they are coming after
us. People are looking to beat us."
