Oh, what I'd give for the Braves to sign Soriano...of course it won't happen.

Suppan files for free agency
November 1, 2006
NEW YORK (AP) -- Jeff Suppan filed for free agency Wednesday after earning MVP honors for the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL championship series against the New York Mets.
Suppan pitched eight shutout innings for the victory in Game 3, then allowed one run over seven innings in Game 7, which the Cardinals went on to win 3-1 on Yadier Molina's ninth-inning homer.
Suppan did not get a decision in the World Series, allowing three runs over six innings in Game 4 against Detroit, which St. Louis won 5-4. He was 12-7 with a 4.12 ERA during the regular season.
Four other players filed Wednesday: Washington pitcher Ramon Ortiz, Colorado reliever Jose Mesa, San Diego first baseman-outfielder Ryan Klesko and San Francisco infielder Pedro Feliz.
Mesa, who made $2,125,000 this season, had a $3 million option that Colorado declined Wednesday. He receives a $515,000 buyout, of which $250,000 already had been advanced to him.
The 40-year-old right-hander went 1-5 with a 3.86 ERA in a career-high 79 appearances.
A total of 148 players have filed for free agency, and about 45 more are potentially eligible to file by the Nov. 11 deadline.

I see Suppan being the classic case of a guy who's had a largely mediocre career getting a huge deal all because of one postseason.

one postseason? look at his stats over the past 4 seasons. they're not bad. i think he's gonna get 10 mil/year and to tell you the truth, he's worth more at that price than schmidt is at 13, or zito at 15.

His ERA was between 4.12 and 4.19 in three of those four years. Good middle-of-the-rotation guy...nothing more.
His WHIP and low K rates also suggest he could be poised for a decline.

He has a reputation as a giant killer, stepping up his game when he faces great pitchers. plus his ERA over the last half of this season was pretty good (2.39 after the All Star Break).

he never had a high K rate. he's a 2 in a pinch and a solid #3. He's reliable and battle tested.
We need to remember something though, worth is relative.

Dude has been around forever, its hard to believe he is only 32. I would have guessed 36/37.
He is a solid pitcher, these days an ERA in the low 4s is pretty darn good. I could definitley see him winning 20 on a good enough team.

that's what i'm saying. by no stretch of the imagination is he a great pitcher, but in this crazy marketplace, he's pretty much worth 10 mil.

not great, but he would definitely be a number 2 on most teams.
