So, what do you all think of the new Jet single?

It rocks, but I'm having trouble getting into it. I suppose it's not as catchy as anything off the first record...or maybe I'm just not used to them putting a song out that doesn't have blatant homages to other tunes/bands.

I look forward to hearing the rest of the disc.
I agree with you. I am not a big fan of the new song, but it is getting a lot of airplay.

The first disc was ok, but it seemed like a rip off of the "Vines - Highly Evolved" disc to me.
Ughh sorry but I cant stand Jet. They're a derrivatie of a derrivative

Don't be sorry....However, don't tell me you like Antony Jonston or whatever that guy is named.

A derrivatie of a derrivative is fine by me if it's catchy and rocks. Paying extreme homage to the point that I can pick out each tune ripped off, is a dicey situation. However, they picked the right bands to rip off and did a fine job doing it. Not all music has to be smart...Sometimes, you have to say F-it, it rocks.

It could have been worse....they could have been ripping off Nu-Metal and bad rap-rock. 03-puke

No, I agree. I enjoy plenty of that stuff. Interpol, The Stills (first album), The Editors, Bloc Party, Elephant etc are all derrivatives of new wave (New Order, Joy Division, etc) which I enjoy a lot. Oasis ripped off (sometimes blatantly) lots of artists, most notably the Beatles. The Hives are good too, who take a lot of punk cues. I have just never liked Jet at all.
Everytime we disagree, I'm just going to call you a pretentious music snob. ;-)

What were they trying to do on the new album? I really enjoyed the first album, but this new one has none of the stuff that made the first one good. It is almost like they tried mashing three different concepts into not just the album, but each and every song. I usuallt give an album 3 listens before making a judgement, but I haven't brought myself to listen to it the 3rd time.

I totally agree. The new one is awful. I absolutely loved the first album, it was one of my absolute favorites of 2003. I think the problem is that they've replaced like 2 people in the band. Its just not the same group and they wanted a new direction I guess. The post punk/new wave sound on "Logic Will Break Your Heart" was great. I hear the Smiths, The Cure, Echo and the Bunneymen...it had a very dreamy feel to it. It seems like they just threw that all away on the new one. Probably the biggest dissapointment of the year for me, especially since the first release seemed so promising.

Have you heard of or do you like Ambulance Ltd at all? That was probably my favorite new band from '03, and theyre coming out with a new album this year too I think. Fingers crossed....(although I've heard they might be breaking up already too 03-hissyfit )
Oh, and their cover of Pink Floyds "Fearless" is awesome.

Yeah, I would agree that those were two of my favorites from 2003 and I still listen to them regularly. Let me know if you get any more details on the new release.
