This is an interesting article. Time to rally the US and let them know that they can make a difference to the world that hates us.

90,000 barrel increase? Work harder, I bet the US could make that a DECREASE!

That would be a jolt to those guys.

This shouldn't be an article hidden in the weeds. This should be a rallying point.

Every American should want to stick it to OPEC and the best way to do that is to reduce our dependency on oil. Hell look at the Japanese who rely 100% on imported oil. They turn their cars off at stop lights which sounds stupid but it saves millions of barrells per year.
As Americans we could not run so many stupid errands in our cars. Turn off the lights, unplug appliances when you are not using them, conserve water, especially hot water. The list goes on and on as to what you could do if you were serious about giving the Middle East the middle finger.

I've never heard that, but it costs more in gas to start an engine than leave it run for about a minute. Plus, there is additional wear and tear. My hybrid turns itself off, but it's built to do that. Most cars aren't.

At a long train, yes drivers should turn their cars off. At a stop light? Not clear to me that there is a gain.

Agree emphatically. Especially the folks who drive to the gym to use the stationary bike or run on the treadmill!

Quote:Turn off the lights, unplug appliances when you are not using them,

Ok, you got me here. How does this save electricity?

Moreover, how does saving electricity affect OPEC?

Quote:conserve water, especially hot water. The list goes on and on as to what you could do if you were serious about giving the Middle East the middle finger.

I hope you mean "you" as in people in general.

And drive around the parking lot looking for a closer space.

I live in a third world, well maybe 2 1/2 world island. My electric bill has avg anywhere from $350 to $1100 per month so you learn pretty quick where you can save and cant.

Our source of energy is WAPA (water and power authority) and it operates only on oil. Most electric companies in the states use multiple sources to supply energy and are also on a power grid so that helps a lot stateside.
With appliances if you have your computer, cell phone charger, coffee maker,t.v.'s etc.. plugged in they are pulling power all the time not just when turned on.
If you use a lot of water and believe me when I tell you from someone who relies on rain to fill the cistern that Americans use a **** ton of water, you have your water heater clicking on and off. There are new water heaters that have coils that heat up water only when you need it.
In the states your water probably comes from a water treatment plant and that plant requires energy to filter all those tons of water every day. The more water you use the more energy required to operate the water plant.
I live in a place that requires AC 365 days a year but you learn to use it sparingly. I typically only turn it on night to sleep with and run the ceiling fans during the day.
In the states I notice half the buildings I walk into in the summer are freezing cold and in the winter are damn near boiling. Businesses could definitely make a better effort then they are doing.
Bottom line is there are a lot of ways to reduce the use of oil and energy in America but we like all of our toys and having all of the conveniences myself included. I changed my habits the first time I got a $1,000 electric bill and I guess that a lot of folks in the states would do the same.
Problem is we pay $.32 per kilowatt hour where as the national avg in the states is $.08 per kilowatt hour so I don't see people changing their habits anytime soon.

You're lucky, some of us suburbanites have no choice.

I think if we keep pushing the alternative fuels they will have to keep prices down, but we can't get lazy on the research when they drop it to $1.40 a gallon again.
