You are not updating properly.

--deep is reserved ONLY for rebuilding after adding new use flags and other such situations. Updating with the --deep option will try to update anything it can find, in effect yanking out the carpet on applications who were quite happy with the libraries portage installed for them.

To sync your system (add the latest packages to your portage):
emerge --sync
(do this no more than once a day, it's proper netiquette)

If you are using eix (you should be!) ... run update-eix after said sync.

To update your system:
emerge --update world

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I tried that first, then tried using --deep to see if it would help any, but both yielded the same result.

Have you installed modular X.org (aka xorg-x11 7.x) ?

That's the conflict.

If you haven't done anything with xorg-x11, then Gentoo must have recently marked Xorg 7 stable. You will ultimately end up having to unmerge xorg-x11 6.9 and then emerge Xorg 7.

I'm going to reinstall Gentoo soon. I've learned a few things this time around that I think will come in handy the next time I install it. Definitely a learning experience.

Xorg7 has indeed been marked stable... that's the problem.
