that is the biggest reasons that I hate it..that and the whole sissy tieing thing.

Once hockey dropped ties and I started understanding whats goin on I started liking it
rickheel Wrote:Maybe you dont understand what is going on.

in this thread? or in soccer? i guess the answer is probably yes to both. but soccer is way too boring for me to ever want to learn.

First of all, you can tie (hockey got better because they got rid of the tie). Second, they play like a bunch of wussies, all ways diving and trying to get the the call (other sports you get ridiculed, in hockey you can even get penalized). Next, its too long for too little scoring. 90 minutes? Continously? I can't see how you can sit through that if the game can end in a 0-0 TIE!.
I don't mind soccer. I just think of it as a less exciting form of hockey. Many of the same rules. Soccer is definitely more grueling having to play non-stop the whole game, but what I don't like is the lack of shooting (seems like you get 3-5 shots on goal per game) and how much the referees figure into the games. The calls are too subjective. In hockey you rarely see a penalty shot in soccer there have been many and they all seem to factor into the outcome. Not to mention the adverse effects of a yellow card or red card.

Not to mention the fact every time one of them get touched, they fall and act like the lost an eye or something... People think flopping in basketball is bad, watch soccer.

Perfectly sums up how I feel about World Cup soccer. That, and the field is WAY too wide.
MongoSlade Wrote:That, and the field is WAY too wide.

If it wasn't so wide, nobody would score. The ball would just get swallowed up in a very congested midfield. No crosses, no runs down the side lines. It would just suck.

It still wouldn't be as bad as Dook football!
Americans are too ADD to watch soccer. They need time outs to flip through channels.
Take time to learn the game and you will have an appreciation of what they are doing.

but with Duke football-atleast you get to see FSU, Miami, VT play...at Duke football prices!

and what would you call the european soccer fans? civilized with amazing attention spans? what goes on in the stands is more exciting than what goes on, on the field.
rickheel Wrote:Take time to learn the game and you will have an appreciation of what they are doing.

i appreciate what they're doing. i don't think anyone here can deny that soccer is an extremely difficult sport. regardless of that, it's still incredibly boring. and no, i wouldn't like it better if i understood it.
Exactly. I understand how sports like NASCAR or arena football work, but they still bore me tears. I'm sure soccer players are fine athletes and if you enjoy watching them play, more power to you, but it's something I'll never get into.
Honestly I think its not popular in the US for a few reasons:

1. There's a considerable lack of promotion towards soccer in comparison to basketball, baseball, and football.

2. No notable soccer star that most people do recognize. Probably the most recognized US soccer star is Mia Hamm who, as a female, cannot compete in the MLS or the men's World Cup.

3. MLS does not have the clout as other international leagues such as the German Bundesliga, English Premier, or the Spanish Primera.

4. We can hardly compete at the international level of play which was very evident in this World Cup.

that might be generally true, i wouldn't know. but for me, the snore factor is just too overwhelming. i mean, how many exciting things happen in the average soccer game? 4? 5? golf has a lot of hype in this country, as does nascar, but both are hella boring. hell, i can't even watch college football. of course, any sport with a clock already has a problem in my mind, but that's an argument for another day.

I actually know a good number of people who were pretty pumped and dissapointed in the U.S. team in this world cup. Soccer is growing in this country, but you will see it become a lot bigger if we were actually good at it. All the premier soccer players in the world play in Europe, how many U.S. players play in European leagues? I cant imagine it is very many. The problem may be that all of our elite athletes play other sports instead of soccer, perhaps if some athletically gifted people were brought up playing and loving soccer instead of basketball or football we would do better in the world cup. You hear of a number of world class athletes from other countries who were brought up playing soccer and excell at basketball or football in the U.S.

Personally I would rather our best athletes stick with basketball and football because I like those sports better but it would be pretty sweet if we would win a world cup someday.

i couldnt help but notice you have a "giants" avatar. now i prob love baseball more than any other sport, but if i had never seen it before and just sat down and watched it w/o understanding the subtlties of the game, im sure it would be way more boring than watching a soccer game for the 1st time. seriously, think about how much down time is there in any given baseball game. if thats not boring to an outsider, i dont know what is. and a no hitter is one of the greatest accomplishments and most exciting things to see in the world of sports, and the score could only be 1-0. "points" is obviously not everything.

and sports with a clock you have a problem with? what does that leave you...baseball, golf, tennis..sports most people would consider "boring"
that is why many folk would consider swoosh "retarded"
He's just pissed that the ppl who are beating the home world record hafta use corked bats and the juice...but then again he doesnt like talent in music-so why should sports be different?
Soccer on tv just doesn't translate very well. Soccer is better when you are actually playing it.
I like soccer, but I can understand why people wouldn't. That doesn't mean that it's boring, it just means someone doesn't like it. Boring is subjective and I doubt that one of the most popular sports in the world would be by definition "boring".

Why do you think there has been such a huge shift in what young kids are playing these days? Baseball is an inherently (sp?) boring game until you learn the nuances of it.

And that's fine, but I don't understand when people say that they "HATE" soccer.

Look, I don't care much about the WNBA and I think that it's over hyped, but I don't claim to HATE it. I merely choose not to watch.

Some people are just bitter, methinks.
You want me to like soccer? This would get my interest.
