I was very happy with SuSe 10.0. It did so many things so very well. Software management, while requiring extra repos, was fairly bulletproof. Software updates worked great.

WHAT.... THE... ****... HAPPENED to SuSe???

I installed 10.1 and was greeted by the Linux equivalent of the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan. *MAJOR* bugs everywhere you turn. The software management is a total wasteland now. I tried for FOUR HOURS to get the software update tool to work... AND FAILED. And it's not like I'm a n00b... I'm usually the guy people come to when they have lost all hope. This is AWFUL. This is the most unhappy I have ever been with a major distro. And in case having a completely crippled and bug ridden software management system wasn't good enough...... Beagle is content to devour any and all activity on the hard drive at all times..... helloooooooo snail speed. Especially when you DO manage to get software to install.... Beagle goes ape ****!

I am left stunned and without a confident n00b-friendly distro anymore.... defaulting back to Fedora. I'm going to give Kubuntu a try first on this machine. If it doesn't cut it.... my next might be Mepis or Fedora. I really really MUST have a GUI control panel similar to YaST for the client's computer.... suggestions welcome.

And if any Novell employee reads this.... if you introduce a whole bunch of sweeping major new features in your distro.... that's good. If the side effect is dropping a nuclear weapon on what use to be a rock solid distro.... that's very very very bad.
Anddddd my Ubuntu 5.10 CD fails to have a working Xorg on this machine; shocking given it has nVidia integrated graphics.

On now to PCLinuxOS, then to Mandriva, then to Fedora, then Ubuntu 6.06, then Mepis.

If all fail I shall in desperation go with Xandros.

I don't want to resort to Gentoo if I don't have to, b/c I know there's not a comprehensive GUI control panel in Gentoo, which is needed for this client.
There's also Mandriva, Slackware, CentOS (same as Red Hat Enterprise)

I've used CentOS a lot, but it's only been in server environments. The other two I hadn't used in quite some time.

Ubuntu 5.10 also failed to install cleanly on my AMD Athlon XP system where no other distro has to date. I haven't tried 6.06 yet.
SALVATION!!

After talking around with some devs, it seems that despite Novell pushing back the release one month, the bugs in YaST couldn't be fixed in time. In fact, they could come nowhere close to fixing the problems.

Yea, even with SMART installed, it's just not as good as 10.0. OK I GIVE UP -- I'm installing SuSe 10.0 on this bitch.

SuSe 10.0 is still being mirrored here quite fast:
