Virginia PG Mapp may get sixth year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia point guard Majestic Mapp has been cleared to apply for an extension for a sixth year of eligibility. Mapp, who played in all 31 games as a freshman during the 1999-2000 season, could play 2 1/2 seasons as a graduate student. He has missed the past two seasons with knee injuries that required major surgery, is on track to return to the court in October — and graduate in December. Mapp said rehabilitation of his right knee has gone well, and his focus now is strengthening his quadriceps and hamstring muscles. He averaged 5.3 points a game and was second on the team in assists with 69 as a freshman. Todd Billet, a transfer from Rutgers, has played both guard slots and will be eligible this season.
