J.J. Redick, a likely first-round pick in this month's NBA draft, was arrested for driving while impaired early Tuesday and has was released on $1,000 bond, a Raleigh-Durham, N.C., television station reported.
WTVD, citing a police report, said that Redick was arrested at 1:03 a.m. in Durham, N.C., after the former Duke star made an illegal U-turn to avoid a police checkpoint.
The television station reported that Redick is scheduled to appear in a Durham court on July 17.
The NBA draft is scheduled June 28 in New York City. How an arrest will affect Redick's draft status is unclear.
"I think that these things hurt anybody's draft status," an Eastern Conference GM, who wanted to remain anonymous, told ESPN.com's Andy Katz. "They do in my eyes. I take these things seriously. That's too bad."
Redick had previously pulled out of scheduled workouts with Orlando and Boston this week. Previously, he had worked out for Golden State, Utah, Houston and Seattle.
Among the teams reportedly interested in Redick is Houston, which has the No. 8 pick.
Redick, who won the 2006 Wooden Award as the nation's top college player, shot 47 percent from the field, 42 percent from 3-point range and 85 percent from the free throw line in leading Duke to a 32-4 record. He finished his career with 2,769 points and 457 3-pointers.

Between this and the pot incident a few years ago, why does Redick have such a squeeky-clean image? Could it be because he's a cornfed white boy from Duke? Not saying, just asking.

I contend that they are just as prone as "regular people" to commit crime, but when one of them gets a DUI it's all over the TV when if my neighbor gets a DUI it's all over his household.

you're right, they are just as likely as a normal citizen. but, just like CEO's, they make a ton of money and should be held to a higher standard. i imagine that you're gonna respond with "they shouldn't be put on a pedestal." well, maybe you're right, but we live in the real world and in said world these guys are seen by millions of kids everyday, and because of that, should be a little more responsible. i think the other thing that gets on people's nerves is, if your neighbor did get a DWI he;d be punished, plain and simple. Unfortunately, when these athletes commit crimes they often get a slap on the wrist and are allowed to go on their way and possibly commit the crime again.

I agree with you there. But that's the modus operandi in rape cases, which is why so few women step up and press charges when it happens. I mean, we have a culture that blames the victim when something happens (her dress was too short, she's a stripper, she had multiple partners in her past, etc) and then wonders why certain heinous acts go unpunished.
BTW, on your other post, I don't think that athletes should be held on a pedestal and I do believe that they should be prosecuted and punished the same that you or I are. Now, I know that this is not the case in the real world, but we as a society have to demand it for it to begin to happen.

I can't remember the other guys, but i don't have the patience to search right now. But i can tell you that 40% of the players in the 2001-2002 season had a formal criminal complaint for a serious crime filed against them.

no, and i said i was wrong to add shaq to the list. but the duke players do have a long listyou have to understand that these guys are usually not 1st time offenders. also, a lot of these accusations have overwhelming evidence but never go to court because the women are always intimidated. i could post the evidence but it'd take me way too long.
for instance look what happened in kobe's case. the woman's whole sexual history was brought into court. it's hard to go along with the case when your whole life is put into question.
BTW, on your other post, I don't think that athletes should be held on a pedestal and I do believe that they should be prosecuted and punished the same that you or I are. Now, I know that this is not the case in the real world, but we as a society have to demand it for it to begin to happen.
yeah, we do have to demand it, but until then we have to argue about it the way it is in reality, not how we'd like it to be.

I will add this as well, I think that this unfair generalization applies to Duke as well. I think it is unfair to look down upon every Duke athlete because of the recent actions of the lacrosse team and now JJ Redick (This coming from a current UNC student.) You can criticize the way the Duke administration has responded to these problems, but don't unfairly judge every Duke athlete, because the majority of them are good kids.

I hope you did not take my previous statement personally, for I do in fact realize that I am writing on an internet discussion forum. But that does not change the fact that there are people that share your view, whether you were exaggerating or not. The intention of my reply was to urge those that do share that view to reconsider generalizing an entire population of people on the actions of a few.
And Swoosh, I think it is great that you can somewhat accurately name a few NBA players that have had legal issues in the past. I wish to know what your point is? If you would so desire, I could do research and list all of the NBA all-stars that have never had criminal complaints filed against them.

you could indeed come up with hundreds of players who have clean records, but i wasn't trying to prove that there are more criminals than good citizens in the NBA. What i was trying to point out is how many stars commit crimes and how the NBA is filled with crime. I'm not quite sure how you can't concede that the NBA and NFL seem to have more criminal activity than other sports. it's simple stats and common knowledge. too many players are 'thugged out.'
i once again urge everyone to read the books about criminals in the NBA and NFL, but i'm probably wasting my time, as most of you don't wish to see how severely misinformed you've been on this topic.

For example, ever look at baseball? Hockey? And go overseas and look at soccer. Shoot, when I was at Tulane, we had a tennis player take someone's life and get away with it. His brother happens to play on tour, BTW...
Again, I contend that athletes are no different from the rest of society in terms of crime rate.

oh please, don't be so thick. how can you not believe there is more criminal activity in the NBA and NFL? MLB and NHL have far less reports of domestic violence and assault. i'm sorry, but your views on race have blinded you on an issue that shouldn't carry the race tag (even though it probably does).
