Yeah, I wish Apple had such a device, before I accidentley log off a computer at school erasing my paper 20 minutes before it was due. Now I HAVE to study for the final so I can at least get a D.

apparently when installing a program you get a
"enter admin password to install this program"
but it doesnt ask for password for programs that install with the initial file
example:
double click kazaa.exe
"do you want to install kazaa? type in password:__________"
installing kazaa.exe
......installing blah.dll...... installing shortcuts......... installing spyware.exe..... installing codecs..........
gg.

A couple things here...
1. *nix users have been complaining about security in Windows for years, they are trying to make changes to help security and they get blasted anyway...
2. This is still an early beta, you should know by now that there are always bugs in beta's, especially early ones.
Maybe Microsoft should take the Apple way of thinking, only give the software to developers and make them sign a non-disclosure agreement. That way the preconceptions of the few don't kill the OS before it is ready to be released... this is a major change from the old Windows, you have to give them time to work out the bugs. That is why it is called a BETA.

They've had over half a decade. They have thrown away the "advanced command line". They have thrown away the "next generation security base". The only thing new after all this time is the "aero/glass" interface... which is a direct rip off of features OS X has had forever, and features that require less than half the horsepower to do in OS X or in Linux with XGL. Oh yes, and they have a new filesystem, but of course every Windows release has a new filesystem, primarily to hinder operation with non-M$ platforms.
So, given an eternity.... they've come up with absolutely nothing new and managed to create what is easily the slowest and most bloated operating system of all time. With the power it takes to meet the MINIMUM SPECS for Vista, you could run FOUR LINUX DESKTOPS will all the bells and whistles.
Windows Vista: YOU LOSE, GOOD DAY SIR!

This is not an argument of PC requirements. You are bitching because of new security dialog boxes (that most likely will be changed before the final version), after years of you bitching about how all users have "root" access to the OS. I'll reserve judgment after they release the final version of the software.

Their day of reckoning will come. As Linux installations worldwide continue to double every 12 to 24 months, I will continue to be blissfully liberated from Microsoft's flawed products and policies, while doing my part to twist the knife a little deeper by helping anybody and everybody who wants to give Linux a shot.

OMFG. Look what Vista gives a 4 of 10 for performance:

ratings are on a 5.9 scale.... ratings get updated as new stuff htis the market.
its so everything 'isnt always a 10'..
its so everything 'isnt always a 10'..
Quote:First, we need to understand how the System Performance Rating Tool (SPRT) devises its ratings. At present, SPRT doles out scores ranging from 1 (lowest) to 5.9 (highest), but the high-end will grow over time as new hardware emerges. For instance, the NIVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS scores a 5.9 in our tests (for GPU, but 5.5 for the 256MB of RAM), but in two years the latest and greatest form NVIDIA will likely score in the 6 to 7 range. The 6800 HG's score, however, will never change substantially. (We say "substantially" because in our tests with Beta 2, we found that the same system components in the exact same system could be rated differently if the tests were run immediately after a reboot, or after hours of use.)
Quote:In this way, the usefulness of these scores will hinge on how software developers score their minimum requirements. Microsoft's decision to use a "lowest-score takes all" approach makes sense in this context, because software developers have been using the lowest-common-denominator approach to their own recommendations for quite some time. Consider Abobe's "system requirements" for Photoshop CS2: Pentium III, 320MB RAM, Windows 2000, 650MB of free HD space, and a CD-ROM. The poor sap actually running Photoshop CS2 on such a machine must find life a trying experience. Be that as it may, the point of SPRT is meant to give less savvy users a way to grasp those minimum system requirements, and it's needed. Consider CPUs, for instance. Gone are the days when "Pentium III 800MHz" was reasonably easy to locate in a spectrum of performance. Now it's "Pentium D 930" and "AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+". In the PC world, model number soup is as complicated as it has ever been, and a quick glance at Intel's roadmap (Core Solo, Core Duo, Core 2, etc.) shows that this isn't going to change anytime soon.

It's meant to scale up to 10. So DOUBLE that 4 machine, and you're close to what Vista devs think is the ultimate Vista machine >.<

Just enjoying the first time I've seen you defend an
product! ;-) When I first saw a picture of the Vista desktop, the first thing that stuck out at me was the OS X dock ripoff -- complete with a trash can on the right end -- I guess they got tired of using the "recycling bin"
I happened across these funny videos that show just how right you are:

with more hd space that computer will top out at a 5.9....
aka, my computer would get a 2 with only onboard, but jumps to a 6 with a 150$ video card.....
Quote:Now, SPRT looks at hardware in five different categories, assigns a score for each, and then reports the lowest score among them as the system's "overall" rating. The upshot is this: a PC's overall rating is essentially determined by its weakest link. That means that a sweet new rig with an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ and 2GB of RAM could still be rated only a 3 overall if it were shipped with a DirectX 9.0-compliant card with only 64MB of system RAM (the video card would be rated 3.3 or so, while the RAM and CPU would both be 5s).
Quote:SPRT is not meant to be a comparative metric, nor a trustworthy indicator of absolute performance. It's simply what I like to call "LCD squared." You take the lowest aspect of the system, score it, and then send people to software retailers looking for that "lowest common denominator" match on the shelves. That it also helps Joe Consumer (the "lowest common denominator" in terms of tech savvy) purchase software and... well, that's the point.
aka
Dr Mr Consumer,
if you want to upgrade something, upgrade the thing with lowest score. you seem to have everything but storage maxed out. so get some more storage. I see you have one of the best CPUs so i cant recommend UPGRADING THE CPU TO EITHER SOMETHING THAT COSTS 1k/CPU or something that isnt out yet.
its ment so in 1year when mr consumer goes to upgrade his computer isnt BEST EVAR WITH FULL 10s.
though also, if they changed it down.
mr consumer: "WTF 1 year ago i had full 10s now i have a 5?!?!"
