Perfect example of why fan voting MUST GO. Especially if they're going to make the all-star game so important with home-field advantage on the line.

damn, i hate all star voting. it's sad how the right players always get screwed.

I wouldn't mind the fan voting if home field advantage for the WS wasn't decided on who wins the game.

it's too bad, because i like selig, but this is one of his few mistakes.
05-31-2006, 11:40 PM
selig has been kinda weak.

I can't wait to see Selig hit the road before he embarrasses himself more and totally destroys baseball. He's a joke!

Wow, I can't believe Jim Edmonds is #3 amongst outfielders. His numbers are nowhere near all-star worthy.

i'm just curious, what don't you guys like about selig. keep in mind MLB and MiLB have never done so well before. both are setting attendance records. i don't see how you can come up with more than a couple bad decisions he's made.

well, what can't they stand? how he helped the average fan by creating interleague? how he staved off a detrimental salary cap by instituting revenue sharing? how baseball has more competitive balance than any other league?
i will give you that he turned a blind eye to steroids in the early and mid 90's and what he's done with the all star game. but he's entitled to a couple mistakes.

You've got to be joking about baseball having more competetive balance than any other league. The NBA, maybe, but definitely not more than the NFL or NHL (although I don't follow hockey much, so maybe not).
To answer your question, I think the whole steroid mess and the strike in '94 is why the general public has such a distaste for Selig.

why doesn't baseball have more balance?
tell me how many teams in the NL west can win the division? the answer is 5. how many in the central? 2.
how many in the east? 3.
How about the AL east? 3
central? 3
west: 3
that's not bad at all. i'd also say there have been more teams in this century who won the WS than teams who won the super bowl. and that's with the NFL putting more teams in the playoffs than baseball.
the steroid thing doesn't bother me, why does it bother everyone else?
as for the strike. didn't the NFL have a couple work stoppages in the 80's? nobody seems to care about that. people talk about baseball more because MLB is always under more scrutiny. I mean people seem to care about players being on roids, but nobody seems to care about NFL players getting arrested or dropping dead at 50.
as for the NHL having more balance.... WTFC about hockey?

But that means that there's a couple of teams in each division that are already out of it, a third of the way into the season. In the NFL the last few years, we've seen as many as 20 teams with playoffs hopes into the last couple of weeks of the year. That is balance.
But, competetive balance isn't that big of an issue to me. I like the wide-open style of the NFL, but I've also never been a huge fan of parity. And parity definitely reigns surpreme in the NFL right now.

interesting, i did a little tally and i counted 12 NFL teams that never had a chance at the playoffs last season. and right now i've counted 10 teams in baseball who are absolutely out of it. what does that tell us? i still can't see how the NFL has mroe parity. right now i see only 1-2 teams in baseball who have no hope for the next 10 years: the royals and possibly the pirates. everyone else has a shot to bring home a title within a decade.
BTW, i forgot to count the reds as being it when i said there are 2 teams in the NL central who have playoff hopes, so there's 3 teams in that division.

Wait another third of the season and I guarantee you a lot more than 10 teams are out of it.
Also, who were the 12 NFL teams you counted? Not questioning you, just interested to see who they were.
