I'd be remiss if I didn't at least mention him tying the Babe. Whether you love him or hate him, this is a historical day in baseball.
I was kind of surprised by the number of cheers he got in Oakland. There were some boos mixed in, but not nearly as much as I would have expected.
Honestly at this point his numbers in relation to the babe are almost completely irrelevant, its like apples and oranges. What is still relevant is his numbers compared to Sosa, McGuire and other roiders.
Was anyone actually rooting for him to tie the babe??? Hitting that many homeruns is still impressive but he I can't in good conscience say that he has tied the Babe.
Just three years ago this probably would of gotten front page news everywhere across the country. But today nobody really cares.
He is the best of his era though.
it would take too much time to argue this. a funny thing happened to me this weekend though. we were in NY (we actually went to the Met game that wagner blew) and we were about to go into a restaurant when a doorman outside a hotel jokingly commented on my dad's giants jacket. he made some comment about how it's foolish to root for bonds and how everything he does should have an asterisk. so my dad asked the guy if he was a yankees fan and he said yes. so my dad was like 'do you still root for giambi and sheffield'? and the guy said 'yes, of course.'
everyone is so hypocritical, it's funny.

I don't understand why Sheffield gets a free pass, but I think Giambi doesn't get mentioned that much anymore in the steroid talk because he came clean and admitted he used steroids. He got clean and is back to being one of the game's best power hitters'. We're a very forgiving nation, and the sad thing for Bonds is, if he had admitted he had steroid problem and said he was no longer on them, he could have avoided a lot of this mess.
yeah, but what you just said, kinda proves that this whole thing is less about steroids and more about being likable.
funny thing is, giambi is dead right now. he came out like a house on fire.

what about not having to travel west of the mississippi? players today have to deal with different timezones and unocmfortable airplanes. it was probably nicer when you only had to travel a couple hours and you had a bed to sleep in.

Babe still hit 60 when it was amazing to hit 20. Sure, he benefited from certain variables, but he still blew away his competition in a way that has never been done and will never be done again. I mean hitting 60 back then was literally like hitting 150 now. That's why Babe will always be the greatest power hitter to ever live in my book.
