Maybe someone can confirm or disprove the allegations made in this letter to the Editor in today's Dallas paper:

"Last week, the U. S. House voted to raise the minimum wage for all states and U. S. Territories - except American Samoa. American Samoa's main employer is a tuna company whose headquarters are in - you guessed it - Nancy Pelosi's home district.
Is this the open and honest government she promised?"

I omitted the letter writer's name since it is irrelevant to us, but it was not me.

We heard a lot from certain posters on this board about ethics and how the dems would clean it up when they got into power. So what gives? If this letter is correct, it looks like business as usual, just different crooks.

I find it ironic that a republican would complain about the Democrats ethics. [Image: rolleyes.gif] By the way, why do you guys continue spinning this story? I guess like WMD's, if you say it enough, it is bound to come true. ;-)

"The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), applies generally to employment within American Samoa as it does to employment within the United States. The minimum wage rates for American Samoa are set by a special industry committee (29 U.S.C. 205, 29 C.F.R. Part 511) appointed by the U.S. Department of Labor, as required by the Act. The rates are set for particular industries, not for an employee's particular occupation. The rates are minimum rates (29 U.S.C. 206(a)(3)); an employer may choose to pay an employee at a rate higher than the rate(s) for its industry."

Hmm. Interesting. I wonder if the republicans run the Labor Department?

Secretary of Labor: Elaine L. Chao

"She is the first Asian American woman and first Chinese American[2] to be appointed to a President's cabinet in U.S. history. Chao is the President's only original cabinet member still holding his or her position, making her the longest serving cabinet member during President Bush's administration."

My impression of an ethics debate is two groups of crooks pointing at each other. But what we are getting from the left, people like you and mach and nancy, is that Democrats are all clean, all evil is Republican, etc. We get the finger-pointing over Foley from the same group that ignored, even canonized Gerry Studds. We get the fingerpointing at Richardson from the party of William Jefferson. And we get Nancy and Harry pointing at the Republican Party in general, when they have their own unethical deeds and inconsistant actions.

I did not take this gentleman's letter to be proof - I asked if anyone could confirm or disprove the allegations. And then you ask me why I keep spinning this story? What spin did I impart? You immediately annoint me as the representative of Republican interests and proceed to act on your stereotypes. Maybe you are just incapable of recognizing evenhanded treatment when you see it.

Thanks for the facts. I think that is a first for you. But no thanks for the venom and hatred. That's not new.
