With the way Colorado has played so far this year, this division may well be the best in the National League, amazing considering how bad it was last year. While there's not one great team, the Giants, Padres and Dodgers should be in the mix for the division and the wild card for most, if not all, of the season, and D-Backs and Rockies look like they might have more staying power than we thought.
Could this be the best division in the National League? I still give a slight edge to the Central, but the West is better top-to-bottom.

i don't know. i think you're mistaking mediocrity with competition. i mean, the giants and dodgers both suck and the rockies seem to be slowing down. The d-backs have one starter and no bullpen. The padres can't pitch and can't hit. If the west is the best in the NL, then we know there's a problem.
Well, the NL is obviously very weak this year. Whoever's the best division may be the best by default.
more like all of baseball, except for the white sox. the red sox are probably second, since foulke has started pitching well again.
how come we cant fix the divisons instead of having six in one and four in the other

It wouldn't work geographically. You'd have to move one team from the NL Central to the AL West. Either that, or do wholesale realignment, which MLB isn't going to do.

yeah. it's too bad sports are so money driven, or else baseball could go back to 2 divisions, with 2 teams in each league making the playoffs and obviously the winners would face off in the WS.
course the cards have Mr. Home Run.

I'm in the minority, but I loved when it was only two divisions in each league. Win your division or go home. The wild card has been good in some ways, but there's no drama in the pennant races anymore.
And, don't get me started on how much I hate the 5-game LDS series'.

I disagree. I love the wild card system, and without it there would have been next to no drama in the NL after July last year (I really dont count the NL west last year as it was the battle of the sub .500 teams)
well it depends on the stand point. the wild card has been great for baseball, in the sense that it has helped to draw in the casual fans, which hockey doesn't have. most of the time, the hardcore baseball fans don't like the WC. But on the whole, it has really helped MLB. just like interleague play. most hardcore fans don't like it (i'm the opposite, i've always liked it), but it's been great for MLB. It's given the casual fans a chance to see the yankees play the mets.

But think about how great the American League East race would have been if you had the Red Sox and Yankees battling it out in a one-game playoff for the right to go to the ALCS. Biggest rivalry in sports. One game. Loser goes home. That's the kind of drama you don't have anymore.
That said, I like the wild card in some ways, because it does add an extra element of excitement late in the season, but I think the wild card team should be severely punished in the playoffs. First of all, I think the LDS's should seven games, and second of all, I think the wild card team should only get one or two home games.
you think the red sox v. yankees is the biggest rivalry in sports? not to go off on a tangent, but i thought a rivalry was one where both teams have won virtually the same amount of times. the sox lost every year for 100 years, until a few years ago.
i think duke, UNC and giants, dodgers are both truer than red sox, yankees.
Depends on your definition of rivalry. As one-sided as it has been, no two teams hate each other more than the Red Sox and Yankees do. It's as passionate as it gets.
I see your point, though. I don't know if it's the best rivalry in sports, that was just kind of a knee-jerk comment.
I hate the NL West just because the Astros always play like crap against them, especially the giants. What the hell was up with this series they just finsihed with the giants. We lost 10-1. 14-3, and 10-1
Giants are also 20-5 at MMP =(
yeah, this was a pretty sweet series. damn those 3 young starters for the 'stros really suck.
