i still think this was the right move for the Jays, because their window of opportunity was open, but on the flip side i knew this would happen. i guess i'm trying to say, that even though we all knew this would happen, i think it was something the Jays had to do.
As much as I loved how ambitious the Jays were this offseason, this was the one move I didn't like, and it was for this very reason. A team like the Yankees could take a gamble like that because Steinbrenner wipes his a$$ with 55 million. But for a mid-market team like the Jays, five years and 55 million is way too much to invest in a guy who's always on the brink of Tommy John surgery. Hopefully this isn't anything major, because if he becomes the next Darren Dreifort, Toronto's in big trouble with all that money tied up to him.
i disagree. it seems like they had the money to waste. and they really had to do this. without him they had no chance if getting to the playoffs, and because of the injuries they might not have him anyway, but at least they tried. their window of opportunity is barely open, because the yanks and red sox are not going to stay this weak.
But why would they sign a guy to such a huge contract who's such an injury risk? IMO, they should have gone after a guy like Jarrod Washburn, Jeff Weaver or Kevin Millwood. None have the raw stuff of Burnett, but their net effect on the team, when you take injuries into account, would have been greater than Burnett's. And they would have been a little cheaper than Burnett, except for Millwood, who got a similar contract from Texas.

At least with those guys you know they're going to give you 30 starts a year and give you around 200 innings. Their numbers may be a little worse than Burnett's, but they're sure as heck better than Burnett on the DL.

i agree. but they had to do something. but let's break it down a little:
-burnett got 5 years/ 55 mil
-millwood got 4 years/ 48 mil, with a club option for a 5th year which would then make it 5 years/60 mil
-washburn 4 years/37.5 mil
-weaver one year/8.3 mil

when you look at it, the contracts don't differ that much. burnett got that money because he throws 98 with a nasty slider. i would've rather had the other guys too, but i have no problem with burnett, becuase when he's on, he's better than all of them.
