Full Version: Is Brandon Phillips finally living up to his potential??

Wayne Krivsky stole him from the Indians.

Brandon is hitting .370 with 1 homer and 9 rbis in 27 at bats. I really think he will be the reds starting second baseman the rest of the year.
Probably too soon to say if he's finally figured it out, but that would certainly be huge for the Reds if he did. This guy's always had mega-star potential. It's not too late for him to live up to the hype. Good to see, because he really fell off the map for a while. Going into the '03 season, he was one of the two or three best prospects in the game, IIRC.
yeah, he's always been an amazingly weak hitter.

Well last night he had an rbi triple (it might have been a double and an error, not sure tho), a two run bomb and a grand slam. On Monday he had 4 rbis. On wednesday he had 3 rbi's. In a little over a week and a half he is second on the reds in rbi's with 13 in around 28 at bats.

dayamn! who would've ever thought he could do that?

They scored it a single and a two-base error on Lee. But either way what he's done so far is very impressive. Can you believe the Reds' 7 & 8 hitters last night had 9 of the teams 12 RBIs, not counting a 10th that scored on the error?
I believe Narron has started him at 2B in something like 5 of the last 6 games now. Attitude problems aside, I think the knock on Phillips has been that in the past he tries to go for the long ball too much. Well, it seems he may have corrected that tendency since he's been able to make consistent contacts for base hits. If Phillips continue to do well, the Reds will be looking to trade Womack (or he'll ask for one soon enough).
well this sucks. ryan freel is an important player on my fantasy team, and if phillips continues to mash, freel's playing time will do a good impression of david caruso's acting career.
Narron will probably still find a way to keep Freel in the lineup at least 5 out of 7 days somehow. His speed at the top of the order is invaluable to the team. Plus who knows how long Griffey will be out?
Brandon goes 3-6 today with a 3 run homer and an RBI single. This kid is a incredible 04-bow
His updated stats:

.372 batting average, 3 home runs, 17 rbis, 5 doubles in 42 at bats.
Pretty amazing stuff. I hope he can keep this up 'cos they're gonna need to score some runs to keep winning.

they aren't gonna keep winning. don't they do this every year? i mean, you can't make the playoffs without pitching.

Hey swoosh, Harang threw a shutout today. Harang and Bronson are both extremely good. After that.....meh

L O L, you recognize you say the same thing every year. i do feel bad for you though. you always think your pitchers are better than they really are. i don't have one starter who's better than a #2, and you have no relievers any team is scared to face. Kind of like the giants pen.

I think both Harang and Bronson are quality #2 pitchers, but your right the rest of the pitching staff is ******. Can't wait till Wood and Bailey get up here, we are in desperate need of fireballers.

Yeah I know. I really don't have any fantasies of them making the playoff. I'm just happy that so far they've been competitive. The starting pitching is still pretty inconsistent, and as you've pointed out the 'pen sucks.
to be fair, most 'pens suck. we had to bring in jeff fassero in the tenth inning of a tied game.
I forgot to mention that every single one of Brandon Phillips' rbi's have come this week. 17 f&#@ing rbi's in a week NL Player of the Week for sure.

definitely POW. i doubt there is a person in this galaxy who could've predicted this.
well, Krivsky finally made a move today, designating Womack for assignment while acquiring Cody Ross from the Dodgers. At least the crowded 2B spot has cleared somewhat, but more moves are sure to come when Griffey comes back from the DL.
the giants made a move to, designating tyler walker for assignment and bringing up their top relief prospect, who, in his 1st appearance yesterday went 2 innings, striking out 3, walking none and throwing only 22 pitches. I'm so excited, we finally have a reliever who can throw strikes and throw hard. he throws 94-95.

Not a bad move by the Reds. Womack was just taking up space. Ross has a solid bat.
it would probably be smarter to worry more about the pitching than the second base situation.
flyingswoosh Wrote:it would probably be smarter to worry more about the pitching than the second base situation.
True, but I don't know if there's a team out there right now willing to give up good pitching. I wouldn't be opposed to them getting rid of 1 or 2 of their 36+ yrs old relievers, but it's not like the Reds have an abundance of pitching talent in their farm system ready to make the jump to help out with the big league club.
the giants probably are the only team willing to trade pitching. i would definitely bet schmidt is available, as well as either brad hennessey or kevin correia.

Anything you could get for Hennessey or Correia would be great, because neither of those guys impress me, even though Hennessey's pitched well so far. At any rate, they're 5th starters at best for the Giants, and if they could trade them to some starting pitching-starved team and get some help for that bullpen, the Giants better go for it. The rotation is pretty much set with Schmidt, Morris, Lowry (whenever he comes back), Wright and Cain.

I wouldn't trade Schmidt, though, unless you can get guys who can help you win this year. That division is clearly the Giants for the taking, so why trade Schmidt for prospects? Schmidt's not an ace anymore, but I still think he's a good No. 3 starter and an innings eater. Those are hard to come by.
see, i agree that hennessey is a fifth starter, but he is a bulldog. correia has awesome stuff with really good potential. i disagree about trying to get stuff to help them win this year, in fact i want the exact opposite. i want prospects and i wanna trade durham, schmidt, and alou. i want them to blow up this team now. yeah, we can defnitely win the division, but big deal. we aren't gonna get to the series, we suck.
Wow.

Do the Giants have enough young talent to go into total rebuilding mode?

maybe, that's what trading veterans is for. we have frandsen, esteve, valdez , sanchez, sanders (hopefully). horwitz and threets. the biggest thing we have is $$$$$. at the end of this season bonds, alou, finley, schmidt and durham come off the books. that's a combined $51 mil. after the 2007 season we have benitez, matheny, vizquel, and worrell coming off the books. that right there is close to $20 mil. we need to get ourselves some free agents.
hennessey pitched really well again today. his last 6 major league starts:
6 innings 2 R
7 innings 4 R (in coors)
6.1 innings 0 R
7 innings 1 R
6 innings 2 R
8.2 innings 1 R

not bad stats.
