How would you rank the top 10 prospects for your favorite team? Here's how I would rank them for the Braves.
1. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
2. Elvis Andrus, SS
3. Chuck James, LHP
4. Joey Devine, RHP
5. Anthony Lerew, RHP
6. Yunel Escobar, SS
7. Beau Jones, LHP
8. Eric Campbell, 3B
9. Scott Thorman, 1B
10. Brandon Jones, OF
James, Devine, Lerew and Thorman should all be in Atlanta this year.
Andrus is a 17 year old phenom who is obviously years away, but has an incredible ceiling.
Saltalamacchia is a beast of a hitter who will likely move to first with Brian McCann looking like the catcher in Atlanta for many years to come.
Escobar, Campbell and Beau and Brandon Jones are at least a year or two away from the majors.
1) nothing
2) nothing
3) nothing
j/k, but seriously, we're not exactly stocked. I guess i won't count cain.
In no particular order:
- eddy martinez esteve
- nate schierholtz
- merkin valdez
- clay timpner
- jesus reina
- jonathan sanchez
- marcus sanders
- fred lewis
- kevin frandsen
- travis ishikawa
keep in mind that the chances of any team's prospects becoming any good is about 5-10%. so i urge you all to not get to overexcited.
Do you mean each individual prospect only has a 5-10 percent chance of panning out? If so, I disagree. Sure there are always busts, but a good number of the highly touted prospects in baseball end up having good major league careers.
BTW, I love Marcus Sanders. He played for my hometown minor league team (Augusta) last year, and man was he fun to watch. He can run and play shortstop like no one's business. I hope he ends up making it.
umm, he's not much of a SS, he made like 30 errors last season. maybe you saw him on a good day.
i did mean each prospect. i guess i wasn't really thinking what i was saying. i suppose each top 10 prospect has less than a 50/50 chance of becoming really good. a majority of them just don't turn out to be as good as you're saying. ok maybe the braves prospects do, but when i read what you wrote i just couldn't shake the feeling that you thought each and every one of those prospects was going to turn out to be an excellent player.
Well, Sanders had a bad shoulder last year which caused his errors to go up. But he's very smooth and covers a ton of ground. That shoulder is a worry, though.
I would say 50/50 is about right for most prospects, but it's probably a little higher for a team like the Braves, who have the best scouts in the game and know talent when they see it.
that's true, i forgot about that shoulder problem.
yeah you're right, it probably is higher for the braves. i guess i've just been a giants fan for too long. we hardly ever develop a good player.
No kidding, who was the last good one? Noah Lowry's good. Cain should be very good. But, what about position players?
GDawgs88 Wrote:No kidding, who was the last good one? Noah Lowry's good. Cain should be very good. But, what about position players?
well, not to be technical, but i think lowry's better than good and i think cain will be an ace, but that's not important.
you're exactly correct to intimate their lack of home grown position players. the last one who actually got to start was lance niekro and he's not very good. other than that, i can't think of one. i guess pedro feliz would count. there hasn't been a decent one since bill mueller, and before that it was matt williams. now you understand why some of us smart giants fans have been clamoring for sabean to be fired for over a year now.
Really? I thought you were a big Sabean fan?
GDawgs88 Wrote:Really? I thought you were a big Sabean fan?
sabean lost our trust when he traded nathan and liriano and signed alfonzo to an awful contract. Actually, the worst part was trading jerome williams for the gutless wonder- latroy hawkins.
You've gotta be kicking yourself over that Twins trade. You got a one year rental who didn't even have a good year for one of the best closers in baseball and one of the top pitching prospects in baseball. Imagine if you had Cain and Liriano fronting the rotation for the better part of the next decade and Nathan as the closer.
Wow, what a killer (not in a good way) trade for the Giants.
you have no idea how often my dad and i talk about that. cain, liriano and lowry at the top of the rotation. young, cheap and awesome. that top 3 is about as good as it would get. alas, sabean and his scouts screwed us over.
Reds.....not a very good farm system. Have some very good impact prospects, but not much if anything after that.
1. Homer Bailey-97 mph fastball, plus curve, if he doesn't get hurt he will be our #1 by the beginning of next year
2. Travis Wood- 95 mph fastball, excellent change, only 17 and hes a lefty. dominated in rookie ball last year with 65 ks in around 40 innings with a mid 1 ERA (2nd rounder last year)
3. Jay Bruce- athletic outfielder, good lefthanded stroke, compared to larry walker, jim edmonds and jeremy hermida, ETA 2008 (1st rounder last year)
After that......no talent at all
are you kidding? homer bailey as the #1 in '07? what are you smoking? He averaged over 6 walks per 10 innings, which is god awful and he did it in A ball. not just A ball, but low A. Also, his ERA was 4.43. i would have to say you won't see him with the Reds till maybe september of '08, unless he makes some serious strides.

He is in big league camp right now, your right he does have a problem with his control but his potential is off the charts.
He pitched yesterday against the tigers i think: 2 innings, 1 hit, 2 walks, 2 strike outs, no runs.
Also you probaly don't know that O'Brien established a tandem starter system in the minors last year. So someone like Bailey would start one day and relieve the next. They would be limited to 60 pitch counts, so they could never get in a groove. It was to limit the insane amount of arm injuries our top pitching prospects had been suffering. I think that stunted Bailey's development, luckily our new GM Krivsky got rid of it.
i'll start out by saying, you're correct, i had no idea that they had that system in place. it's a pretty cool system. also, you're right that he does have a ton of potential.
the third thing is, don't get to excited about anything don ein spring training. my new rule this year is, anhything done in spring training, whether good or bad, will not get me excited or upset. matt cain threw 2 shutout innings yesterday, and i don't care. it doesn't excite me when he pitches well and it won't bother me when he gets shelled.

I'm taking that approach, too. In the past I've taken some things in spring training more seriously than I should have. I still look for encouraging signs, but I take it for what it's worth.

yeah, this is the first year i'm taking this approach. obviously, some things translate directly, but not many things. for instance, andruw had a great spring training and had an amazing season, but on the flip side, there are a ton of guys who have great spring training's and have their typical awful season.
I guess you could call Edwin Encarnacion an prospect, only played half the season last year and will be our starter this year. Swoosh I know you don't care about spring training but Encarnacion hit a 2 run homer off and a double in his only two at bats against Randy Johnson. So far in two spring training games he has 3 home runs and 7 rbi's.

i beg you not to get too excited. i saw encarnacion play with the bats (that's their AAA team, right?) and he could hit the ball a long way. he has what it takes to be a good player, but don't expect him to start doing it in his first full season.
He has incredible bat speed and is very athletic. If all goes right he should be an all star caliber player in 2-3 years.
Just wanted to give Swoosh an update on Homer Bailey. It looks like he has in control in check.
15.1 innings and only 2 walks. He also has 15 strikeouts and a WHIP under 1. His ERA is 2.93.

sweet, good for him. it's always cool to see a prospect flourish, as long as he's not a dodger. i guess it's not a second to soon for the reds, who have given up like 113 runs this year.

And 5 home runs in the 4th inning along today ;-)
Don't worry though, the Dodgers have Billingsby (spelling?). That kid is going to be a stud.
JFlight21 Wrote:Don't worry though, the Dodgers have Billingsby (spelling?). That kid is going to be a stud.
billingsley, or maybe not -ey. but that's not all they've got, they're loaded. russell martin- C
willie aybar- SS
Joel Guzman- used to be a SS, but has become too tall
andy laroche- 3B, the better half of the laroche children.
and others who i can't remember.
Lasting Milledge- 5 tool outfielder, should be in new york in september
TailgateTiger Wrote:Lasting Milledge- 5 tool outfielder, should be in new york in september
Where's he gonna play? You've got Floyd in left, Beltran in center, and Nady in right.

it's too bad they can't get rid of that *****, carlos beltran. talk about a guy who won't play through injuries. He hates pollen season, 'cause whenever he sneezes, he pulls a muscle. he should be ashamed of himself getting paid what he does and not playing through little injuries.
to answer your question, they should trade floyd. unless he's a free agent, i have no idea. lastings milledge is a top 10 prospect.
As great as Milledge should be, why would they trade a guy like Floyd in midseason to make room for a rookie when they'll probably be contending for the playoffs? I'd say wait until the offseason to work Milledge into the lineup.

i didn't mean this season, i agree they should wait till the offseason. now isn't the time to be bringing up kids, and forcing them into high pressure areas.
Edwin Encarnacion is tearing it up. He is hitting just under .300 with 3 homer runs and 23 RBI's.
This might be a good thread to update everyone on our best prospects progress throughout the season.
Homer Bailey has another outstanding outing. He throws a 6 inning no hitter with 9 strike outs.
Not a whole lot happening in the Braves system so far, but Martin Prado, our top second base prospect, got off to a great start and Mississippi and got called up to Atlanta. He looks like a player to me. Fluid athlete, solid bat and a good glove.
in other prospect news, the giants brought up their top prospect kevin frandsen, because mr. unbreakable ;-) , ray durham was put on the DL, with some kind of ***** injury.
frandsen went 3-4 with 3 runs scored and a HBP. and jeremy accardo was filthy for the second appearance in a row. i hope they don't send frandsen down when durham comes back.
Last night Homer Bailey threw another 6 inning no hitter with 11 strikeouts.
Our top position prospect Jay Bruce hit two home runs last night.
JFlight21 Wrote:Last night Homer Bailey threw another 6 inning no hitter with 11 strikeouts.
Hello! That kid's not breaking a sweat down there.
Reds Pitcher Johnny Cueto has thrown two straight complete game shutouts. One being a no hitter, the one yesterday being a one hitter. ERA is at .293 with 50 strikeouts and 6 walks in 40 innings.
He is in Class A (Dayton Dragons) and he just turned 20. He's got a 96 mph fastball. It looks like he has surpassed Travis Wood as our #2 pitching prospect.
Also, our top hitting prospect should be getting a promotion soon. Jay Bruce is doing very well .282 9 homers 30 rbis in 40 games. He is at Dayton.
Homer Bailey threw a 7 inning 1 hitter last night, with 7 k's. His longest outing as a pro. He should get a promotion to AA in a few weeks.
our...... oh wait, we have no prospects.
I guess this is the Homer Bailey progress thread ;-)
7 innings 3 hits 1 run 0 walks 8 strikeouts. Krivsky, it is time for you to promote him to double AA.
Homer was promoted to double A and in his first start their he threw a 6 inning shutout with 7 strikeouts. On his 98th and last pitch of the night he hit 98 on the radar gun
