It works now thanks to Nick's suggestion of RPM tools in Gentoo's portage. I used rpm to see what depend. it had -- and knowing I had all of them solved; I installed rpm2targz. I extracted the created tar.gz straight into the root filesystem. I next installed the Lexmark Foomatic kit at LinuxPrinting.org so it would work with CUPS. I must say I'm shocked. Not only does it work flawlessly, but BETTER than it ever did on Windows way back.
